The contact owns 2000 Mercury Sable. The contact stated the vehicle had an adjustable pedal. The contact stated when grease from the brake pedal was on the brake light switch, it burned out. When the brake warning light illuminated on the instrument panel the brake light failed to work. The vehicle was repaired under NHTSA recall campaign id number: 01v078000 (exterior lighting: tail lights: switch), but the failure continued to occur and had to be replaced five times since the recall repair. The current mileage was 220,000.
Brake pedal position switch failure that caused brake lights to fail. The same failure also occurred on June 7, 2002. In addition the brake light switch was replaced on April 19,2001 to comply with recall 01s08. The brake light switch is not the problem. It will fail again.
Upon starting the vehicle, it would not shift out of park. There were no brake lights. The consumer stated that he turned the key to first click, he pressed the gear shifter down and shifted the gears. The gas station replaced the brake light switch. The brake switch was replaced once before per Mercury division recall in March, 2001.
Nhtsa#01-v-078-000 vehicle description: passenger vehicles equipped with adjustable pedals. If the grease from the adjustable pedal assembly enters the stop lamp switch, it can contaminate the contacts leading to carbon build up, and potentially a short circuit. The recall failed and the brake lamp switch was replaced 6 times.
While driving and without warning the electrical system failed. On several occasions, the brake lights remained on and/or came on by themselves after the engine was cut off. Defective brake light switch assembly had to be replaced. Cruise control would not deactivate at 76 mph.
The dealer does not have the parts available to perform recall 01v-078, the consumer has contacted the dealer on several occasions. Nlm.
Recall notice regarding 2000 Mercury Sable stop lamp switch and wiring. The consumer received the recall April 2004. The consumer's problem is that because of his work schedule the dealer is already closed by the time he arrives in the area. Therefore the consumer has been unable to schedule the service.
Brake light switch continued to fail, which was caused by grease contamination from the adjustable pedal linkage as stated in recall 01 v 078 000. Ford failed to address the problem and stated the brake light switch was not under warranty.
