38 Speed Control Cable problem of the 2002 Mercury Sable

Failure Date: 05/08/2012

The cruise control gas cable broke off the holder by the throttle valve, resulting in jamming the throttle valve in open position, the car became out of control as the brakes are not able to slow down the car, only turning off the ignition helped slowing down the car so no brake booster. One very dangerous situation. The design and material are of substandard. I have it documented with pictures.

Failure Date: 12/05/2011

The contact owns a 2005 Mercury Sable. The contact stated that the accelerator pedal would become stuck sporadically and would cause the vehicle to accelerate abnormally. The contact believed the failure was caused by the cruise control because the failure would only occur when the cruise control cable was disconnected. When the failure would occur, the contact would shift into neutral to stop the failure. The vehicle had not been inspected. The failure mileage was unknown, but the current mileage was 89,000.

44 Speed Control Cable problem of the 2001 Mercury Sable

Failure Date: 11/14/2011

My 2001 Mercury Sable accelerated as I entered the highway. The car would not stop even when I applied the brake. I called 911. The 911 operator suggested that I apply the parking brake which I did. I went about 15 miles riding the shoulder going between 60-70 miles per hour. I eventually exited the highway but could not stop even at the end of the exit ramp. I made a right hand turn. At this point I had reduced my speed to approximately 30 miles per hour. The car eventually landed in a ditch. At that point, I ended my call with 911. I looked to my left and found four men yelling to me to get out of the car. I then learned that the car was on fire. I exited the car. The four men put the fire out with a fire extinguisher. The car was towed to a Mercury dealership where it is documented that it was in fact the speed control cable that caused the car to accelerate. Again, between the 911 call, the information on file with the Mercury dealer and the insurance claim, the cause of the incident is documented.

45 Speed Control Cable problem of the 2002 Mercury Sable

Failure Date: 10/01/2011

The contact owns a 2002 Mercury Sable. The contact stated that he heard a banging noise while driving 50 mph and the vehicle suddenly accelerated. The contact shifted into neutral and shut off the engine. The vehicle was then towed to an independent mechanic where the contact was informed that the cruise control cable was damaged and caused the failure. The mechanic disconnected the cruise control cable. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and offered no assistance. The failure mileage was 81,000.

46 Speed Control Cable problem of the 2005 Mercury Sable

Failure Date: 08/05/2011

Driving the vehicle at about 30 mph. The car accelerated to about 60 mph at which time I was riding the brakes the entire time till I could pull over. The engine goes to 4000 rpm while in park. If restarted its the same thing. This was happening off and on. I took to garage and they cleaned and checked carburetor and fuel pump. It continued again and I finally took it in again. This time they changes the cruise control cable. Again, it continued again and I finally took it to the dealership which they replaced the gasket. And again I am still having problems with the vehicle. I would love to sell this car and get a new one, but I cant afford it. I was hoping to be able to give this car to my 16 year old daughter, but that is totally out of the question as I do not feel the car is safe to be driving. I also can not afford to be taking this vehicle in the shop and paying for parts that just don't seem to be working. Please look in to this matter as I believe their are many people out there in my same situation, but have not taken action as they just give up. The last thing we need is for people to get injured or die from this problem.

47 Speed Control Cable problem of the 2001 Mercury Sable

Failure Date: 08/05/2011

I was driving my 2001 Sable (24v dohc) and the car began acting like the gas pedal was stuck. I could lift the pedal up with my toe and that did not stop the acceleration. I shifted into neutral and turned the car off and coasted into a parking lot. When I restarted the car the engine was racing. I opened the hood and found the problem to be "a broken (plastic) retainer ring at the end of the cruise control cable by the throttle body" as someone else described it better than I could in technical details. I could reset the cable and seemed to be fine unless I accelerated too quickly, because that seemed to what triggered it to get stuck. I could still go fast (interstate speed), but I could not go fast too quickly. I temporarily fixed the problem by taping the broken cable with duct tape or electrical tape which seemed to work for a couple months. I experienced the problem about 10 times in a four month period before trading the vehicle to a dealer. Due to the recent recall of the later models tauruses I thought I should report the issues I had. I never informed the manufacturer about this and I never took it to a professional for diagnosis.

48 Speed Control Cable problem of the 2002 Mercury Sable

Failure Date: 06/16/2011

While driving at 35 mph, gas pedal was stuck down to floor, rpm and speedometer controls were at the maximum and the engine revved up. Vehicle started to accelerate so I depressed brake pedal slowing the vehicle down enough to shift it into park and shut the vehicle off. A passerby stopped by and taped the cruise control cable back together.

49 Speed Control Cable problem of the 2004 Mercury Sable

Failure Date: 05/24/2011

The contact owns a 2004 Mercury Sable. The contact stated that while approaching a stop sign at 50 mph, she heard an abnormal pop. The engine rpm's increased to 4000 while the contact was applying extreme pressure to the brakes. The contact coasted off the roadway and shut off the vehicle. Once restarted, the vehicle abnormally accelerated to 50 mph. The contact stated that the accelerator pedal was not being depressed. The vehicle was taken to the dealer where they advised her that the cruise control cable was fractured and caused the throttle to become jammed. The vehicle was repaired by having the cruise control cable disconnected. The failure mileage was approximately 61,000. Updated 3/2/12.

50 Speed Control Cable problem of the 2002 Mercury Sable

Failure Date: 12/14/2010

When cruise control is on and active and gas pedal manually depressed ( to pass car) throttle will stick open. Ball on throttle plate comes out of saddle on cruise control cable. When foot taken off gas ball on throttle plate does not return to original saddle position at end of cruise control cable. Ball on throttle plate gets stuck on edge of entrance to cable saddle. Throttle sticks partway open with amount open depending on cruise control cable position / amount of throttle commanded by cruise control. I fixed by placing a piece of 1/2" o. D. Tube over cable (slit along length and then over cable, cable tie in position). This is enough to keep ball on throttle from coming out of saddle on cruise cable. Basically snap lock in saddle is wearing out after repeatedly pressing on gas while cruise control is on and active. No more problems for 20,000 miles.

51 Speed Control Cable problem of the 2005 Mercury Sable

Failure Date: 11/17/2010

Throttle was randomly sticking upon acceleration; problem became progressively worse and was reproducible at times. On one occasion car was stopped via brake and shifted into park while engine continued to run at 4,000 rpm. Brought car to dealer on 12/02/2010; problem was diagnosed and described as "cruise control cable holding throttle open. " dealer replaced part with part no. Yf1z-9a825-CA. (problem was reproducible without any use of cruise control system. ) no problems with throttle sticking occurred until approximately 5/20/2012 ( 95,600 mileage) when same behavior began to recur at freeway speeds though without the cruise control being used.

52 Speed Control Cable problem of the 2000 Mercury Sable

Failure Date: 07/24/2010

On several occasions, the throttle stuck and car continued to accelerate at a very fast speed. Mechanic ran diagnostic test and finally replaced throttle cable assembly. Problem continued. I had two trips to mechanic and repaired and replaced my garage door three times because I couldn't stop the car. Mileage 93119. Finally gave up and traded car in.

53 Speed Control Cable problem of the 2001 Mercury Sable

Failure Date: 02/24/2010

Driving on the hwy with my 3 yr old daughter @ approx 65 mph the veh started accelerating on its own. Even with pressing the brake veh would slow down but kept accelerated on its own ( and it kept climbing until I pressed on the brake) and got upto approx 80 mph. I was able to safely get veh off the hwy with depressing the brake extremely hard (and veh kept creeping forward, luckily the light turned green quickly) and a Ford dlrshp was right next to the hwy. Dlrshp performed repairs. They replaced the accelerator cable assembly for the throttle control. I was adv by dlrshp that the plastic piece on the cruise control throttle broke and got stuck on my regular accelerator cable. I cant begin to say how frightened I was for my daughters safety as well as my own. I seen there is an investigation for 2005 & 2006 tauruses. . . You need to also look @ the 2001 Sables for the same problem! someone is going to get killed if they don't do something about it.

54 Speed Control Cable problem of the 2001 Mercury Sable

Failure Date: 10/01/2009

After getting up to cruising speed on the highway my car would continue to accelerate even when I stopped giving it gas. I disconnected the cruise control cable and this fixed the problem, but now I can't use my cruise control.

60 Speed Control Cable problem of the 2001 Mercury Sable

Failure Date: 01/07/2007

My wife was driving her 2001 Mercury Sable and when she took her foot off of the accelerator the car continued to accelerate at a high rate of speed. She didn't drive the car for a year. I took the car to the dealer and a couple of garages and nobody could find the problem. I finnaly tried to fix it myself and found the problem to be a broken retainer ring at the end of the cruise control cable by the trottle body. I never replaced the retainer due to fear it would break again and maybe cause an accident. I tied the cable back with a tie wrap. I did call and report this incident, but never heard anything. Now with all the new recalls I wanted to report it again. Thank you.

66 Speed Control Cable problem of the 2001 Mercury Sable

Failure Date: 03/10/2004

I registered this complaint before via telephone. Now I see that the NHTSA is looking into Ford taurus with the same acceleration problem. The problem is the e-ring on the end of the cruise control cable. Even though you're not using the cruise control, if the e-ring fails the cable gets caught and the car accelerates. This happened a few times and when I brought it in, the dealer couldn't find the problem. There's a cover over the cruise control cable where the e-ring is. I ripped off the cover and worked the accelerator by hand and saw the problem. I never replaced the e-ring and just tied off the cruise control cable and not use the cruise control. I haven't had any problems since. [xxx] information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u. S. C. 552(b)(6).

67 Speed Control Cable problem of the 2002 Mercury Sable

Failure Date: 03/04/2004

1) sudden no warning, 2) accelerator cable broke, I was in the middle lane of a busy interstate hwy (I-96)during morning rush hour traffic. The vehicle DE-accelerated rather quickly. I avoided an otherwise fatal ending by turning into oncoming, right lane traffic, and making it to the shoulder of the road. 3) the dealership was eager to replace the broken cable, at a cost to me of $260. 00. Yes I do have the original (broken cable) if you would like to inspect it. Thank you.

68 Speed Control Cable problem of the 2000 Mercury Sable

Failure Date: 06/26/2003

On 06/26/03 2000 Sable parked in friends driveway in park running with a/c on and driver left vehicle. Driver went to front door and then heard a boom. Car went up a slight grade and continued for 15 feet and struck friends new motor home. Owner of motor home opened car door to move vehicle and found car still in park. Owner selected reverse and backed car away from motor home. Metlife auto & home notified. On 06/27/03 this Sable was driven and parked in a parking lot and turned off. When driver and 2 passengers returned to car and started car and shifted into reverse, car proceeded forward. Car was shifted back to park, driver sat there for a couple of minutes and shifted again back into reverse and car again went forward. Car was turned off and driver restarted car a few minutes later and shifted into reverse and car went backwards. Car was taken to morris Ford in burnt hills, NY. The Ford dealership contacted Ford's factory hotline and they said they have no reports pertaining to such. Factory hotline said they would pass info up to engineering. Their advise was for the driver to use the parking brake. That's real comforting!!! the technician checked the shifter cable and found okay! the car is still at the Ford dealership and the factory has not responded back (07/05/03). The car has also had the brake lights stay on after pedal is released. The brake lights have come on with no one in the car. The car shifter has locked in park and would not release to another position. The car has accelerated while driving with no increase of pressure on gas pedal. Ford motors needs to take responsibility for a problem that they say does not exist when it does exist as evident by the number of reports for both the 2000 Sable and the 2000 taurus. When I purchased this 2000 Sable used, Ford credit offered me an extended warranty of 6 years or 75,000 miles which I accepted. I am beginning to wonder if they don't want to honor the warranty.

69 Speed Control Cable problem of the 2000 Mercury Sable
