Left front spring broke gouging an 8 inch tear in tire side wall causing a blowout and damage to anti-lock brake system. Transmission mount was also damaged. If this had happened at highway speeds, loss of steering control and braking could have caused serious injuries. Ford denies any responsibility. I was told that Ford had admitted frequent spring failure on its 1999 to 2001 taurus/sable vehicles and installed guards to protect the tires from blowout. This is second spring failure in 2 years. The first time was the right rear spring broke damaging strut and gouging tire but not causing deflation. Two spring failures on the same vehicle in 2 years indicate that it is not an isolated incident. This is time bomb waiting for someone to get seriously injured.

The left front spring failed and punctured the tire as the car was being backed out of a garage. According to NHTSA campaign id #04v332000, a protective device was to be installed to prevent the tire from being punctured because of spring fracture and the warranty was extended on the spring. The manufacturer refuses to fix my vehicle because it was manufactured after the latest date applied to the recall as noted above. Since, the failure is the same as explained in the recall description; I claim the manufacturer is obligated to cover the repairs based on past history. Plus, the "fix" was not installed on my vehicle at the time of manufacture therefore exposing the tire to the catastrophic failure of being punctured by the broken spring.
When getting car safety inspected mechanic found rear coil springs broken. Research on internet found recall for front springs but nor rear. They are the same type of springs as the front so why would they not be included in the recall!!!!! many other owners have also had the same problem with the rear springs also. I'm just glad the failure did not result in a crash or anyone being injured. Ford motor company should include the rear springs in the recall also.

On may 25, 2010, the left rear strut and spring broke, and punctured my tire. One year later, almost to the date, the left front strut and spring broke and punctured that tire also. Luckily for the second incident, the car was parked. I would hate to think what might have happened had I been driving the car at the time. The rod was right inside the tire, and I'm sure it would have created an accident! Ford/Mercury has no recall on my VIN, although there are recalls on the Ford taurus, which is basically the same car. It is also not part of the Ford customer satisfaction guarantee as some of the taurus' are. I think Ford/Mercury should have taken the appropriate action to have these repaired.
While attempting to make a turn and the power steering became stiff and hard. The vehicle was taken to the dealership, and they found that power steering column module developed a leak.

I have a number of worries with my vehicle. The following are: when playing the radio/tape deck, you hear a loud buzzing noise coming through the speakers even if the radio is turned down; when steering from left to right you'll hear a cranking noise coming from the front end of car; car does not absorb bumps at all, it rocks, makes knocking noise coming from somewhere near wheels; when driving on highway at a speed of about 50-70 mph, car will sway, like a wind is blowing it away; feul sensor will float, you can not count on it to tell you how much gas you have; trunk hood flips up in the air so fast and hard, I have stunted my fingers before on it; the doors on the car have a sharp edge to it, if you don't stand back when opening the door, it can gash your leg; wind shield are a blind spot, to long, wipers are so strong they vibrate the car, unusually strong; back window on left side (passenger) will not roll up, or roll down sometimes; assembly of light moldings/fixtures in back of car are off(not evenly lined up), so is the leveling of trunk lid; car jumps when starting it up, like it's ready to pull off, even when your foot is on the brake; when moving the gears the car makes a knocking noise, and jumps also; brake light comes on and goes off at times; car loses power at times, even after the transmission was replaced in February, 2001; keyless alarm system is sensitive, sometimes a inconvience, if you pick keys up and touch the panic, or trunk release button it can be set off in the house, behind a brick wall.
