1 Tank Assembly problem of the 2005 Mercury Sable

Failure Date: 11/23/2011

The engine suddenly quit running while cruising at 60 mph in darkness on a heavily traveled congested 6 lane interstate highway. The time was 6:50 pm and there was no unusual weather. The car shook for a few seconds at the time of shut-down. I attributed the shake of the car to a loaded semi flat bed truck running in the next lane at approximately 65 mph. We were at normal spacing between vehicles. There was neither contact with this truck nor any other vehicle. The incident occurred on i270 near bridgeton, mo. We merged onto mo 340 and continued coasting until we found a safe place to pull over to call for help. I tried to restart the engine several times while coasting, to no avail. While waiting for help to arrive, I tried to understand what may have caused the engine to quit running. The fuel tank registered one-half full. I recalled reading in the owner's manual years ago about a fuel shut-off reset. I raised the trunk lid, readily found the reset. The red button was up--I pushed it down. I was able to immediately restart the engine. The engine was let run for at least 10 minutes without finding any problem. We continued on to our destination about 8 miles away. The car has been driven on 4 days since then for a total of about 250 miles, with no apparent problem. I write this because I find it extremelly dangerous to have an engine shut down on a very congested interstate highway, after dark, with most traffic running 65 - 70 mph. During this incident, I feared being rear-ended as there was limited opportunity to get off the road.

2 Tank Assembly problem of the 2008 Mercury Sable

Failure Date: 09/28/2011

On the above date - September 28, 2011, I became aware that the gas in the gas tank was moving around (sloshing) whenever the vehicle stopped or started moving from a dead stop. I contacted Ford customer relationship in florida and they were not helpful at all. I talked to them 3 different times - - -they couldn't tell me if there are baffles in the tank to prevent the sloshing - they didn't even know what a baffle was - -would not direct me to someone with more technical knowledge. Last contact was Thursday, oct. 13,2011, yesterday - - was on the phone 32 minutes with an individual who couldn't find the answer and wouldn't try to find someone who could give me an answer. A gas tank should not have a problem such as this in 39 months of ownership. Gas tanks don't "wear out" in this period of time. And I can't get any answers. There has been no accident or damage to this vehicle. Does my vehicle have baffles in the gas tank?? is there a safety issue here with the sloshing of the gas? if there are baffles why would they suddenly stop functioning? would this problem be covered in the vehicle warranty?.

6 Tank Assembly problem of the 1999 Mercury Sable

Failure Date: 04/22/2005

Last Thursday or Friday, I had left my house to fill the gas tank on my 1999 Mercury Sable wagon. The tank was just about full when a child walked by and shouted, hey mister, somethings coming out from under your car. Sure enough, the service station attendant and I both looked, and gasoline was pouring, and I mean pouring from the top of the gas tank. I called aaa and immediately had them tow the car to the local dealer, chapman Ford, in bridgeton, NJ. They have replaced a cannister having to do with the emissions, and some other parts. I am just lucky that this kid came by, or I might have been driving a firebomb. I am waiting, and have been waiting for one week, to have the Ford factory rep call me. I am complaining about the bill, since the car has only 42,000 miles on it, but that has nothing to do with the safety issue. The car is still at the dealers location as of today.

7 Tank Assembly problem of the 2001 Mercury Sable

8 Tank Assembly problem of the 2000 Mercury Sable

Failure Date: 03/03/2001

Well this is really not a defect just very bad design,my 2000 Mercury Sable has no shield of any kind over,on or around the fuel tank that hangs a foot or less off of the highway. I was driving my car down the road and never heard or saw anything on the road, but evidentally ran over something small and it ruptured the fuel tank on the car and I lost all of the gas while I was driving down the road, now that is a big hazard if I would have ran over a lit cigarette. . . . . Boom. They need to design a cover or shield of some sort to prevent a possible bad accident.

I have a number of worries with my vehicle. The following are: when playing the radio/tape deck, you hear a loud buzzing noise coming through the speakers even if the radio is turned down; when steering from left to right you'll hear a cranking noise coming from the front end of car; car does not absorb bumps at all, it rocks, makes knocking noise coming from somewhere near wheels; when driving on highway at a speed of about 50-70 mph, car will sway, like a wind is blowing it away; feul sensor will float, you can not count on it to tell you how much gas you have; trunk hood flips up in the air so fast and hard, I have stunted my fingers before on it; the doors on the car have a sharp edge to it, if you don't stand back when opening the door, it can gash your leg; wind shield are a blind spot, to long, wipers are so strong they vibrate the car, unusually strong; back window on left side (passenger) will not roll up, or roll down sometimes; assembly of light moldings/fixtures in back of car are off(not evenly lined up), so is the leveling of trunk lid; car jumps when starting it up, like it's ready to pull off, even when your foot is on the brake; when moving the gears the car makes a knocking noise, and jumps also; brake light comes on and goes off at times; car loses power at times, even after the transmission was replaced in February, 2001; keyless alarm system is sensitive, sometimes a inconvience, if you pick keys up and touch the panic, or trunk release button it can be set off in the house, behind a brick wall.
