Driving on I-25 northbound, at 50 mph, the vehicle started to accelerate, with my foot off the accelerator. Went from 50 to 65. . . Stepped on brake, brakes slowed/stopped the acceleration. . . Pulled off at the first exit ramp. Looked under hood, for anything not correct. . . Nothing visually detected. Did this one more time. . . 3 days later. Have not experienced since.

We were backing out of a parking space & the car accelerated as though I had pressed the gas pedal. This is the third time this has happened, but the first time going in reverse. Both other times the car was in drive. The first time I was on the freeway and I assumed my foot had accidentally pushed the gas, so I ignored it. The second time I was on a county road, and again I assumed it was my fault. This is the first time I could have really hurt someone, and this could potentially be very dangerous.
The contact owns a 2002 Mercury Sable. The contact stated that while driving 20 mph, the vehicle independently accelerated. The contact removed her foot from the accelerator pedal however, the vehicle continued accelerating. The air conditioning unit also began to operate independently. As the contact applied the brakes, the vehicle continued to accelerate. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic for diagnosis where the idle was adjusted however, the failure recurred. The manufacturer was notified but offered no assistance. The failure and current mileage was 99,000.
I was driving about 35 mph and let up on the gas when I realized I was in a 30 mph zone. I drove about five more blocks without touching the throttle and the car never slowed until I applied the brakes due to coming to a stoplight. This was on level ground. Since then the car will not slow down without using the brakes. I have driven over 5 miles at one time at 60 mph without the car slowing to less than 58 mph. When I take it out of gear to help me slow down the engine revs up and then very slowly idles down. Occasionally the engine will slow and then die when sitting at stop lights. My brakes were worked on 3 months ago but are feeling like they need to be repaired due to shaking when I have to brake hard to stop the car.
The contact owns a 2002 Mercury Sable. While driving 35 mph, the contact noticed that the vehicle had suddenly began to accelerate without warning. In order to stop the vehicle, the contact had to shift into neutral and then shut the vehicle off. The failure had not been diagnosed and had not been repaired. The failure and current mileages were 88,000.
When you accelerate from a stop to get up to the speed limit or flow of traffic when you remove or ease up
your foot from the gas pedal the rpm's shoot up to 3500/4000 rpm and the pedal continues to depress,
increasing the vehicle speed. Pressing the brake will slow the vehicle, but the engine continues to rev-up. You must kick the gas pedal two or three times to get it to disengage.

While driving I experience acceleration of vehicle. I pulled over on a side street and into a parking lot put it in neutral. It continued to rev high and subsequently I turned the vehicle off. When I turned back on it continued to rev and I turned it off. On second attempt of turning vehicle on it began to idle correctly. Has recurred 5 times since first malfunction on oct. 31st.
Driving down road in my 2000 Mercury Sable ,stopped at redlight, tried to pull out,car would only rev up and not move. There were no signs that the transmission was going bad just up and quit pulling. We were. Stuck in middle of road ,with cars passing around us. We. Was in danger of getting hit. We had 100 miles to drive on freeway to get home. If this had happened then, we surely would have been hit by a passing car. I have researched this a lot and have found this a common problem with these cars.
I was driving when I realized that my car was going much faster than it should be. I was going up a hill so I moved both of my feet away from the pedals and realized that it was still gaining speed. I pressed hard on the brakes and managed to bring it mostly to a stop about 80 feet from an intersection and another car. I put it into park, but still had to hold the brake down hard in order to keep the car from rolling forward. When the light changed, I put the car in drive and it "peeled out" and was almost impossible to control. I hit the brakes hard, turned at the intersection then into a vacant parking lot. I put it in park immediately and shut it off. I tried to restart the car and the engine immediately went to 5000 rpm, so I shut it off again and had it towed to my local dealership. The car was definitely accelerating without any input on my part. The brakes were able to slow it down, but only with full pressure and it took much further than it should have to come to a stop. I was driving a 2003 Mercury Sable.

The car is in drive and as you're driving along the car begins to accelerate on its own. When the brakes are applied the car is still pulling forward as if the gas is being applied. When the brake is released the car lunges forward on its own. I'm extremely angry that this problem has not been recalled when a car accelerates on its own and cars have been recalled for less. Regardless of the age of the car do something to fix our cars!!!! fix the problem and put it on your recall list.
The contact owns a 2000 Mercury Sable. The contact was driving 65 mph when he removed his foot from the accelerator pedal and the vehicle did not decrease in speed. The vehicle continued to accelerate and the contact had to apply the brakes with both feet to get the vehicle to slow down. The contact was able to shift into park and shut off the engine. The vehicle resumed normal operation upon restarting. The dealer advised the contact to have a diagnostic test performed on the vehicle before repairs. The manufacturer would not provide any assistance. The vehicle was not repaired. The current and failure mileages were approximately 85,000.

On a 2008 Mercury Sable, on two separate occasions when the accelerator pedal has been fully or near fully depressed, it has become caught under the driver's floor mat, causing the engine to continue to race even when all pressure has been removed from the accelerator pedal.
The contact owns a 2002 Mercury Sable. While at a stop light, the vehicle began moving forward while the contact's foot was depressing the brake pedal. The vehicle began to accelerate and was taken to the dealer, but they could not find any failures. The vehicle has been to the dealer approximately three times for the same failure. The contact believes that the brakes may not be the cause of the failure. The vehicle will be taken to the dealer on June 4, 2009 for another diagnosis. The failure mileage was 38,500 and current mileage was 39,000. Updated 07/24/09.

The car has a throttle over run problem. When I lift my foot off the gas and the apply brakes, it feels as if the engine is not returning to idle completely. The brakes are in good condition. I have had numerous close calls with rearend collisions. The dealer never found a problem.
We have a 2002 Mercury Sable LS premier model. This "failure" has happened several times now, but neither of us communicated to the other about it until today. It is an intermittent surge of the car when braking. The latest time was today, and it happened to my wife. It happened to me also several weeks ago as well. I stepped on the brakes and instead of stopping, the car seemed to go faster and not want to stop. Extreme force was needed to stop the car. Then it was fine.
I have a 2000 Mercury Sable with a speed control that cannot be turned off except by stopping the vehicle. I have had several close calls because the speed control was reactivated while driving. I cannot get any satisfaction. I am the original owner of this vehicle.
2000 Mercury Sable. The consumer stated occasionally while at a traffic light the vehicle will idle roughly and then shut down. While at the light, he has to keep it idling by pressing the accelerator. This has been happening for approximately six weeks. The vehicle has not been looked at for this problem.
The contact states on occasion when he puts on the brakes instead of braking the car will accelerate and the engine will rev. Has to stomp on the brakes, turn off the ignition and/or put the car in neutral to get it to stop. The contact noticed this just after purchasing the car in June. It has gotten progressively worse. Vehicle is a 2001 Mercury Sable. The dealer cannot duplicate the problem. He has not talked to the manufacturer. The cigarette lighter was inoperative, the fuse was replaced.
Dt the consumer had difficulty stopping the vehicle. When the consumer attpemted to stop, the engine started to race. Dealer replaced iac valve assembly.
I put my foot on the brake, and the car accelerated and I was unable to stop causing an accident. This has also happened on several other occassions causing near miss accidents.
Car accelerated without warning three different times while driving, once to consumer, and twice to her sister. When she hit the brakes they did not hold. Her sister had to throw the car into reverse to get the car to stop. They almost had a crash all three times, she never knew when it was going to happen until it happened. Dealer said they could not help unless it happened while they were driving the car. Manufacturer said the same thing.
While stopping at a traffic light vehicle continued to accelerate at full throttle, even when brakes were applied again, and the ignition was turned off. Vehicle accelerated through an intersection, and only stopped when the front axle broke. Vehicle was towed to a dealership, but they couldn't indicated why the acceleration failure occurred, even when a diagnostic test was performed. Car kept lunging and hopping forward while the brakes were on. The vehicle was taken to the dealer but they were unable to determine d the cause of the problem.
