Unknown Or Other problem #1

U. S. Department of transportation national highway traffic safety administration office of defects investigation (nvs-211) 400 7th street, sw washington, DC 20590 September 1, 2006 I own a 2002 Mercury Villager estate Mini van with 54,840 miles and the paint is peeling and in some places showing corrosion. I have been told by the courtesy Ford Lincoln Mercury dealership that there is nothing they can do and the Ford customer service agents tell me the same thing and only a district representative can make the determination. Unfortunately, neither the dealership or Ford customer seen to know how to locate him. I can furnish photos of the vehicle hood with paint peeling off and the back where there is rust near the rear windshield wiper. Ford and the dealership are not responding to my attempts to correct the problem. They tell me that only the field representative can make the decision, but they will not tell me how to communicate with him. It has been over a month.

Unknown Or Other problem #2

Doors locks did not operate properly. Doors would lock without warning. When consumer stepped out of vehicle doors would lock on their own, even with the key still in the ignition switch.

Unknown Or Other problem #4

While driving oil light came on, and then al loud noise came from engine, causing engine to drag. Consumer had oil change twice, and fixed problem temporarily.

Unknown Or Other problem #5

Since September 1997 consumer kept taking vehicle to dealer for hesitation, engine light coming on , stalling, bad gas milage and sputtering. Dealer kept telling consumer it was due to reformulated gasoline. To dealer at least 12 times. Currently, vehicle is out of warranty, and dealer finds all fuel injectors need to be replaced, at cost of $1700.

Unknown Or Other problem #6

Due to a defective transmission gear switch that malfunctioned, engine check light came on. Speed reduced unexpectedly which may have caused a rear end crash. Please provide further information.

Unknown Or Other problem #7

While driving air bag light flashed at all times. Previously, the same problem appeared, but with engine check light coming on, and had to be repaired.

Unknown Or Other problem #8

Engine oil light intermittently flashing when engine is cold (after starting). Oil light goes off after engine is warmed up. Intermittent excessive "engine noise" when engine is cold (after starting). Mercury dealership indicates "sludge" in engine, recommends replacement of engine. Last oil change at 29000 miles and previously at 24600 miles. Dealership is indicating engine damage is due to inadequate maintenance (I. E. Oil change frequency). Ford issued a letter January 1997 (recall 96m89) which describes "piston slap" noise problem and offered to extend engine warranty to 7 years or 100,000 miles. Dealership is contending that the engine damage is not due to this recall but owner maintenance. I would like to know if you can provide additional detail on the 96m89 recall notice and whether or not the engine defect covered by the recall could precipitate the engine damage I am experiencing at 40,700 miles. While I understand this issue is not safety related any assistance you could provide would be appreciated.
