1 Electrical System problem of the 2025 Mini Cooper Convertible

Failure Date: 09/10/2025

While lowering the convertible top on my Mini Cooper Convertible, the trunk partition was not fully in place. Normally, the vehicle will prevent the roof from operating or provide a notification if the partition is not correctly positioned. In this case, the safety interlock system failed to warn me or stop the roof from lowering. While the roof was folding, the rear glass shattered, causing $6,000 in damage. The dealership confirmed that the rear parcel shelf was not fully in place and explained that the sensor only detects one side(in my case the trunk partition was in its place on one side ) , allowing the top to operate even when unsafe. They did not cover the damage under warranty. The vehicle was inspected by the authorized Mini cooper dealership at the time of the incident. No police or independent inspections have been conducted. No warning lamps, messages, or alerts appeared, and the roof operated normally, giving no indication that the partition was not fully in place. The vehicle was only three months old. The shattered glass spread throughout the backseat and trunk area, creating a serious risk of injury to any passengers in the rear. Luckily no one was in the back at the time of the incident.

2 Electrical System problem of the 2009 Mini Cooper Convertible

Failure Date: 04/10/2022

1. Electronic power steering gearbox. Connections almost caught on fire. And yes it is available for inspection upon request. 2. If it would’ve caught on fire. The whole vehicle would’ve torched. I noticed there’s a lot of Mini cooper engine fires. 3. No it has not been confirmed by dealer. 4. No it has not been inspected by the manufacturer. I didn’t feel it was safe to drive the vehicle. I did make them aware of it and ask him how much a new power steering gearbox would be. They said $2200 just for the part. Will also need the connecting wiring also. . So that will ensure more cost. 5. There was no warning lamps messages or symptoms of the problem prior to the failure. Not sure exactly when it first appeared. But there are several Mini cooper‘s that have electrical fires and I just think I caught mine before it went to that level.

3 Electrical System problem of the 2009 Mini Cooper Convertible

Failure Date: 07/15/2019

My car I bought as a pre-own and the owner before e had leaks as well. These leaks caused electrical damage on the circuit boards that made the circuit board shoulder and heat up so hot it almost went on fire. Also the tires were the wrong size and sales person would not admit fault so I had to pay to replace them all. I was driving when I felt the car lose control on the highway and streets, then I was driving when car overheated. I paid to fix leaks more than $7000 and still leaking. Now another light bulb is out my back break light so I cannot drive it because that is unsafe to others driving behind me.

4 Electrical System problem of the 2009 Mini Cooper Convertible

Failure Date: 07/15/2019

Electrical failure since day one bought car as a pre-own. Prior owner history same issues as me. My car almost went on fire, poor performance , leaks and leaks with no reload from $6,000+ repairs. Still leaking. Suspected water damage causing electrical or just faulty electrical. Bulbs go out when car not even driven, canopy broke at service dept and they won't repair free of charge. Battery did not work and issues with key fob recognition.

5 Electrical System problem of the 2005 Mini Cooper Convertible

Failure Date: 04/04/2015

Parked at shopping mall and not running for at least 30 minutes, come out to Mini cooper on fire. Smoke coming out of engine area, high pitch fan whirling, electrical smell. Power steering failed, shorted out, and caught on fire. Vehicle was not even on and parked when this happened. Appears to be a major failure many others owning a Mini cooper have experienced. BMW/Mini cooper of USA did nothing for us and put it all on our and my insurances shoulders. Amazed so many cases of this same issue have happened yet they do nothing and seem to expect everyone else to foot the bill. Got the run around by BMW and unless it was for my insurance company, the Mini would have been scrapped.

Failure Date: 02/03/2015

Power steering pump goes out from time to time, brought it to Mini dealerships once and was working fine when we brought it in, and was told nothing was wrong, and was sent on our way. Now had to disconnect battery to replace a part, and when reconnecting the battery, power steering pumps runs and wont shut off. Vehicle was stationary. Please hep, and thank you.

8 Electrical System problem of the 2006 Mini Cooper Convertible

Failure Date: 04/01/2013

Passenger seat occupancy sensor illuminates at all times indicating no passenger even when passenger is present, thereby preventing the airbag from deploying in an accident. This incident is extremely widespread and found on countless blogs on the internet. At this point, people are completely disabling the system through a device found online just to turn the light off - meanwhile putting their passengers at risk. BMW (manufacturer of Mini) has recalled the same item on numerous BMW's and extended the warranty on those parts due to the inherent safety concerns. How this has not been recalled yet or looked past for the Mini is completely baffling. Somebody appears to not be doing their job! so along with the other multiple posts on this particular site, I would like to add mine and request please that somebody look into this safety issue that is repeatedly costing Mini customers large sums of money or their safety. This is ridiculous. Thank you.

9 Electrical System problem of the 2006 Mini Cooper Convertible

Failure Date: 06/29/2012

Per my research, this a recurring problem with the 2006 Mini coopers. Numerous bulletin boards have the same questions for a safety concern if the airbag will deploy for the passenger seat. Took car to dealer for diagnostics and they gave us a repair price of $1200. 00 to replace the lower seat for the occupancy pad is defective which causes the light to come on for the passenger bag and also the main light in the dash. Not sure if BMW cares about safety of the people who have purchased their vehicles but it is a bit callous on their part for not doing a recall on the 2006 Mini cooper seat sensor. I have seen a regular BMW vehicle that has a similar problem have a recall for a bad seat sensor. I am concerned for any person who rides in the passenger seat if an accident were to happen that the airbag will not deploy causing great bodily harm.

10 Electrical System problem of the 2006 Mini Cooper Convertible

Failure Date: 06/01/2012

Passenger seat air bag warning indicator shows air bag disabled intermittently, even when seat is occupied by full sized adult (over 140 pounds). This means my passenger is at risk of severe injury in case of crash, as the air bag is disabled. In addition to the above, the light is off and on intermittently even when the seat is not occupied. Ditto if a 5 pound lunch box is on the seat. BMW/Mini refuses to correct this significant safety defect in Minis, even though they are making free repairs for the same problem in many bmws of similar years, and have even made an warrantee extension of many years and unlimited miles for affected bmws.

11 Electrical System problem of the 2005 Mini Cooper Convertible

Failure Date: 02/27/2012

The car lost power steering intermittently lasting different length of times. The steering was extremely hard to move. This occurred as I was driving 35 mph with no warning on a left hand turn. Mini diagnostics identified the power steering pump and fan needed to be replaced and said it was infact the same issue being investigated by NHTSA but declined to assist in repairs. . $1200. 00. . . Standing only behind the 30,000mi/3 yr warranty expiration. Please recall the 2005 Mini for this issue. . .

12 Electrical System problem of the 2006 Mini Cooper Convertible

Failure Date: 09/14/2011

Airbag warning light comes on when a passenger is in the front passenger seat. The dealer says the airbag sensor in the seat needs to be replaced. The cost is about $1000. In 2006 Mini issued an extended warranty for 2002 and 2003 models with the same defect. BMW's investigation of the same sensor under the passenger seats of BMW autos resulted in a recall of this part. Nhtsa action number: ea08001. This is a serious safety concern. Message boards have instances of people paying for this expensive safety defect at the dealer, and the problems returning after 1 to 2 years in some cases.
