The environmental air catalyst (eac) sensor on my 2016 Mini failed two years ago when I had only 25,000 miles on the car. (the car now has 30,200 miles on it; I do not drive it very much). Nhtsa worked with Mini/BMW several years ago, and Mini extended a limited warranty for this sensor to 15 years/150,000 miles, but only for cooper "s" models. Mine is not an "s". See recall "s1 m01 05 20" the s has a BMW "b46m pzev/sulev " engine, which is covered by the extended warranty. My car - not the "s" model - has the BMW "b36m" engine. This is not covered by the extended warranty noted above. I have gone online and saw lots of complaints, as this appears to be a very common problem. A Mini dealer in richmond, va told me the same thing: the sensor fails, and you have to replace the entire radiator because the sensor is attached to it. I was quoted more than $2,000 to fix this problem. It seems to me that this defect is as common in the non "s" Mini cooper's as it is in the "s" versions, and that Mini should extend the same warranty to vehicles with the b36m engines. Can you help?.

While driving the car the engine stalls due to timing chain issues . These timing chain issues were part of a safety recall but this car's VIN number doesn't qualify! the car will stall at full speed.
Electrical failure since day one bought car as a pre-own. Prior owner history same issues as me. My car almost went on fire, poor performance , leaks and leaks with no reload from $6,000+ repairs. Still leaking. Suspected water damage causing electrical or just faulty electrical. Bulbs go out when car not even driven, canopy broke at service dept and they won't repair free of charge. Battery did not work and issues with key fob recognition.

Timing chain problems at 75,000 miles on base model 2009 Mini Cooper Convertible. Well known "death rattle" when engine first starts. Also oil dipstick will not go fully back into the tube (sticks out about 4 inches). Dealer and Mini contacted. Dealer says timing chain issue and quoted ~$1400 repair. Also said oil pan needs replacing, another ~$300. Mini not willing to pay for repair. Well known problem. 500,000 Mini's recalled (s model). Not sure why base model was not included in this recall. It should be.
Parked at shopping mall and not running for at least 30 minutes, come out to Mini cooper on fire. Smoke coming out of engine area, high pitch fan whirling, electrical smell. Power steering failed, shorted out, and caught on fire. Vehicle was not even on and parked when this happened. Appears to be a major failure many others owning a Mini cooper have experienced. BMW/Mini cooper of USA did nothing for us and put it all on our and my insurances shoulders. Amazed so many cases of this same issue have happened yet they do nothing and seem to expect everyone else to foot the bill. Got the run around by BMW and unless it was for my insurance company, the Mini would have been scrapped.
The motor mount on the Mini cooper is notorious for leaking hydraulic fluid and needing replacement after fewer than 20,000 miles of service. Mine showed fluid leakage at 18,000 miles, and many others on the internet report this defect in the neighborhood of 10,000 miles. The company has issued a technical service bulletin m22 01 06 for this problem, but will not treat this chronic and dangerous condition as a manufacturing defect. This defect could allow the motor to shift, leading to accidents and loss of life. Having been an automotive mechanic for years, I normally expect a motor mount to last about 75,000 miles. This unacknowledged manufacturing defect is unsafe and costly to repair. For example, I had it repaired at Mini of north scottsdale (az) and it cost me about $245.

The contact owns a 2005 Mini Cooper Convertible. The contact stated that the instrument panel gauges all began to point to zero. The vehicle then lost power steering and the engine rpms began to fluctuate erratically, as well as the warning lights. The air conditioner also shut off independently. The contact continued driving the vehicle and as he exited, the vehicle caught on fire from under the hood. The fire was extinguished and the vehicle was towed to the dealer who repaired the power steering pump, power steering gasket, pressure hose and gasket, fan and motor, valve cover, engine harness, and thermostat. The contact stated that the failure recurred after repairs but the vehicle did not catch fire. The dealer was contacted and informed him that they were unable to diagnose the failure. The vehicle was not further repaired. The VIN was unavailable. The failure mileage was approximately 58,900.
