36 Engine And Engine Cooling problem of the 2010 Mini Cooper S

Failure Date: 12/08/2016

Leaving for work, heard a snap and lost power to engine less than a mile from home. Pulled over, then coasted (with no power steering or brakes) downhill to a safer spot. Towed to mechanic; issue is broken timing chain. This vehicle is just a few months outside the final recall dates for skeen v BMW. I believe the class was too narrowly defined; this 2010 Cooper S (69k mi) has the same n14 engine and problem as described in the recall. (can't tell but from some of the early reporting on that case it sounds like this car may have been included an earlier version/draft??). Very upset that this car has the same engine and issue covered by the recall, and yet we have no recourse!.

Failure Date: 12/02/2016

Motor has rattle was told it was timing chain by mechanic and will need to be replaced or motor will need to be replaced/ Mini sold a defective car and knew about this defect. Now I am out 10k if the car breaks and have no car for family.

39 Engine And Engine Cooling problem of the 2010 Mini Cooper S

Failure Date: 11/03/2016

During normal vehicle operation, vehicle lost power. Pulled to the side of the road, turned vehicle off, and vehicle would not restart. Had vehicle towed to local mechanic. Problem was diagnosed as a broken timing chain.

40 Engine And Engine Cooling problem of the 2010 Mini Cooper S

Failure Date: 10/25/2016

Timing chain evidently broke with little warning and car died in middle of road. BMW Mini has known of this and settled a class action lawsuit without ever issuing a recall or notification to owners. The car had less than 30,000 miles on it.

41 Engine And Engine Cooling problem of the 2011 Mini Cooper S

Failure Date: 10/11/2016

Leaking thermostat replacement. The Mini dealership notified me after repairing the vehicle that nearly every Mini in this model year is coming in for a thermostat replacement. I was tipped off to this after questioning an adapter that was invoiced. Mini knows about this issue of defective thermostats but is avoiding a recall.

42 Engine And Engine Cooling problem of the 2015 Mini Cooper S

Failure Date: 08/31/2016

When I took my car in for its first service I was told that the entire engine needed to be replaced due to a recall. I have not been able to locate any such recall. I have found this entire experience to be very unusual.

43 Engine And Engine Cooling problem of the 2009 Mini Cooper S

Failure Date: 01/28/2016

At 30000 miles the timing chain was replaced due to a recall. Car rattled for a few months prior to replacemen. At 55ooo mile my car engine light came on and lost power. I was able to limp it in to work about another 5 miles. My husband drove it to Mini dealership another 10 miles away and they stated that it blew a valve or a piston quoting him a head replacement of $5000 or replacement of engine for $10000. I purchased this car new and I have maintained it to a t. Reading on line this seems to all be related to the timing chain issue. Mini is not standing by their car and refusing to take responsibilty. Hopefully if we all continue to squeak we can get them to take responsibilty for faulty vehicles. I have a nice looking non running worthless car sitting in my driveway. . . Anyone want it!.

44 Engine And Engine Cooling problem of the 2008 Mini Cooper S

Failure Date: 12/15/2015

Engine rattle upon startup. Next thing I know is the timing chain guides broke and the valves bent. Thousands in repair and Mini won't cover a thing.

45 Engine And Engine Cooling problem of the 2007 Mini Cooper S

Failure Date: 12/02/2015

Timing chain replaced at 32k, just failed again at 92k with mobil one oil and filter changes every 5k miles. Chain jumped in garage during shut down of engine. Would not restart. I checked spark, fuses for primary fuel pump and made a judgement that it was a failure of the high pressure fuel pump and towed it to the dealer for warranty replacement. Got the call the timing chain jumped a link and I would need a replacement again. Can't believe it . Third chain with good lubrication maintenance in under 92k.

46 Engine And Engine Cooling problem of the 2010 Mini Cooper S

Failure Date: 10/25/2015

Timing chain mechanism failure at 70,000 miles. Known issue among at least 500,000 Mini cooper generation 2 models.

47 Engine And Engine Cooling problem of the 2009 Mini Cooper S

Failure Date: 10/15/2015

Timing chain broke well before 10 year or 100000 miles. This timing chain breakage caused my engine to fail due to piston damage or cylinder damage. My engine now needs to be replaced. My vehicle was moving when the sound occurred. When I researched this sound, I learned it may be the timing chain and took it to the garage to be replaced. The garage replaced the timing chain and when they took it for a test drive, it didn't seem to be running right and after further inspection it was determined that the engine was ruined and needed to be replaced.

48 Engine And Engine Cooling problem of the 2010 Mini Cooper S

Failure Date: 08/24/2015

My daughter was driving the Mini cooper on hwy 101w when the car suddenly and with out warning lost all power. She was fortunate to not have been stranded on the highway. We had the car lifted and taken to a BMW dealer. They determined that there is a hole in the #4 cylinder that is responsible for the loss of power. The car has 55k miles on it and is 5k miles outside of full warranty. We have all service records well documented that exceed BMW \mc recommendations. We have since had the car lifted and taken to the mc dealer in camarillo CA. They with out explanation as to what happened state that the car needs a new engine at our cost of $6,500+. This is crazy given the low miles and the fact that it has been well maintained. There is much more information that we can provide however the site seems to time out and this is my third attempt at writing this notification. Please advise or contact me if you can help with this matter. BMW is fraudulently selling these vehicles as reliable and they need to be taken to task. Regards, mike fahner.

49 Engine And Engine Cooling problem of the 2008 Mini Cooper S

Failure Date: 06/21/2015

The contact owns a 2008 Mini Cooper S. While driving approximately 70 mph, the vehicle began to decelerate after the check engine warning indicator illuminated. The contact coasted the vehicle to the side of the road. The vehicle was powered off and back on and was able to be driven; however, the vehicle would not accelerate past 55 mph on a 70 mph highway. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic who diagnosed that one of the cylinders failed and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 62,000.

50 Engine And Engine Cooling problem of the 2006 Mini Cooper S

Failure Date: 05/14/2015

Engine ceased while traveling on highway. Previously took car to Mini dealer when engine light was on and was told that the engine light was probably on because of the gas cap and their was nothing to worry about,.

52 Engine And Engine Cooling problem of the 2009 Mini Cooper S

Failure Date: 03/20/2015

53 Engine And Engine Cooling problem of the 2014 Mini Cooper S

Failure Date: 01/29/2015

Oil filter housing failed during commute and lost all oil. Needed to have the car towed for repair. Received the car back next day. Failed part is currently subject of recall, but my car did not fall into the scope of the recall so I never received a notice. Two days after repair for the oil filter housing, the vanos system failed. Entire vanos system needed to be replaced, took a total of 6 days for repair.

55 Engine And Engine Cooling problem of the 2008 Mini Cooper S

Failure Date: 01/12/2015

I own a 2008 Mini Cooper S and it has 38600 miles on it I have owned it for a year and have to replace the timing chain. This vehicle has had the timing chain changed once before at 13,485 by a Mini dealer. As for this time it is still drivable and has not caused any incidents.

56 Engine And Engine Cooling problem of the 2010 Mini Cooper S

Failure Date: 01/08/2015

Around 7:30pm on way home from work engine started ticking and not shifting correctly. Call my mechanic, who is certified BMW, to get car into shop next morning. Took car to shop next day at 730am for him to check out. He called later in the day to tell me timing chain guide broke off into engine. According to his research there was a recall on this for earlier models - m110212 - so called dealership to see if they would consider this under recall. Spoke to service manager and he said the recall was for Minis' up to date 5/03/2009 and my production date was 11/2009. Told him it seemed odd I had same issue and last time I had issue with car my replacement part was prior to production date - this was fixed because I was still under warranty. I spoke to Mini USA and they said up to dealership to consider. Dealership said I could get it tolled in and they would do diagnosistics but didn't believe it would be part of recall and that I would have to show proof of all car maintanence - made me feel like my fault. My mechanic can certify I do proper maintanence as he said he looked at my engine and it is clean. Mini dealership would not speak with my mechanic to get the professional to professional explanation, they just kept staying my production date was too late for recall. I have opted not to get vehicle towed to dealership (1 1/2 hour away) so they could diagnosis and then tell me not part of recall so charge me for diagnosis and then I pay for tow back. The reason being is last time they had my car in for an issue it took them 3 days to diagnosis, another week to get part and couple if more days to fix - they seemed to be in no hurry to fix my problem nor cared that I lived so far away and had to rent a car.

57 Engine And Engine Cooling problem of the 2009 Mini Cooper S

Failure Date: 10/04/2014

Once you search the 'death rattle' on google, you can get lots of info about what is going on and the death rattle is really common on the r56. It is really a common problem and Mini should take the responsibility of that.

58 Engine And Engine Cooling problem of the 2010 Mini Cooper S

Failure Date: 09/12/2014

Timing chain rattle.

59 Engine And Engine Cooling problem of the 2003 Mini Cooper S

Failure Date: 08/13/2014

8/13/2014- I was stopped at a stop sign in a mall parking lot and smoke started billowing out from under the right front side of the car and at the same time started coming through the vents into the cabin of the car. I tried to shut off the car, but it would not turn off. A bystander came running and opened the hood, smoke poured out, told me to call roadside assistance as he was opening hood and then told me to hang up and call 911 that my car was on fire. Flames were coming out of the engine area but there was too much smoke. The engine fan was still running. Another passerby had an commercial extinguisher and emptied it on my vehicle. The fire dept. Was pulling up as they were trying to push it aside, the car re-ignited and it took the fire department approx. 15 to make douse the fire without it re-igniting. All of these people looked my vehicle over and could find no reason for it to ignite. I purchased the car used about 4 weeks ago and have put about 3000 miles on it without any issues. My insurance company had it towed to a mechanic down the road and they are to contact me tomorrow to see if they can see why this occurred. Luckily, my daughter and I were able to exit the car and be in an area close to the fire department and good samaritans.

60 Engine And Engine Cooling problem of the 2007 Mini Cooper S

Failure Date: 05/23/2014

I was driving at highway speed when without warning the car lost partial power and the engine light came on and began flashing. I pulled over to the roadside and turned the engine off. I looked at the owner's manual to see what the flashing engine light indicates. Nothing definitive was stated in the manual, so I started the engine and drove it to my home about 10 miles under partial power. I contacted a local garage (mienke) and let them know the problem. The garage was about three miles away so I drove it to them. They diagnosed a loss of compression in one of the valves that would require a valve job. I contacted Miniusa to report the problem. They requested I take it to the local dealer for diagnosis. I contacted the dealer and let them know what occurred and asked if it was safe to drive the approximate 20 miles to their location with a compromised engine. They said it would be okay and bring it in. They diagnosed it the next day with a failed timing chain ($1800), vacuum pump ($600) and valve cover assembly ($385). I let them know the timing chain was already replaced by a Mini dealership at 40781 miles and they should replace it at no cost as this is supposed to last 100,000 miles. The dealer would not. I contacted Miniusa again to report the issue and request to have this replaced at no cost. They have not gotten back to me yet and it is still pending their decision. I began to look online for similar issues and found hundreds of complaints from owners regarding the same issue with the timing chain. Mini/BMW is well aware of the issue but still does not cover this reoccurring problem. This is an expensive repair and unknowing Mini owners are spending thousands of dollars to have their cars put back on the road. There is also a pending class action law suit in new jersey for this same issue.

61 Engine And Engine Cooling problem of the 2007 Mini Cooper S

Failure Date: 03/09/2014

Was driving car downtown at a speed on average of 15 mph. Trip only lasted 15 minutes when I parked and noticed smoke coming from my hood. Smoke quickly escalated into a fire. Called 911 to have fire trucks out. Grabbed a fire extinguisher from a nearby business to try to put out the flames, but was unable to even while spraying directly at the flames. Firemen had to pry open the hood to get to the engine to put out the fire. Car engine was totaled.

62 Engine And Engine Cooling problem of the 2008 Mini Cooper S

Failure Date: 02/06/2014

Turbo charger fuel supply line is leaking on my 2008 Mini Cooper S. The dealer suggested a replacement cost of $750. There are many complaints online about this issue and the leak is happening due to poor design. The leak may cause fire damage and might cause extensive damage to the car.

63 Engine And Engine Cooling problem of the 2009 Mini Cooper S

64 Engine And Engine Cooling problem of the 2009 Mini Cooper S

Failure Date: 12/26/2013

Known issues: timing chain and intake valves. Engine light came on at approx 40,000 miles. Dealership diagnosed 2 issues that seem to be known recurring issues for this make/model: carbonized intake valves requiring cleaning, and replace timing chain. This bill will cost over $2600. Several complaints have appeared for intake value buildup and also for the timing chain issues. Internet searches show this as a common issue and also a known issue by BMW Mini. This should have been a recall as they knowingly sold these defected cars in 2009. With only 40k miles to date, I plan to keep this car for at least 4 more years. May not be possible with bills like this one.

65 Engine And Engine Cooling problem of the 2007 Mini Cooper S

Failure Date: 11/30/2013

Driving Mini Cooper S when all of a sudden I lost power to the car and was able to get it off the hwy. Timing chain broke and damaged the engine. The car has 91,000 miles on it.

66 Engine And Engine Cooling problem of the 2009 Mini Cooper S

Failure Date: 10/17/2013

Total loss of power as I was crossing a major highway, car towed to local BMW certified mechanic, shows timing chain misfire, needs total replacement with multiple components needing replaced due to timing chain problem. 3300$ worth of damage to engine. Apparent problem with timing chain on thousands of Mini cooper and they have not called a recall on the piece. This was almost a major accident for me and is causing me thousands of dollars to replace and major inconvenience.

67 Engine And Engine Cooling problem of the 2010 Mini Cooper S

Failure Date: 10/17/2013

Took my 2010 Mini Cooper S to a Mini dealership in ann arbor mi, where they had the car for 8 days and finally came back to me saying that its the timing chain that needs replacing, which is a fix with a total cost of around $1,500. I previously had a 2007 Mini cooper, which also had the same issue, where in that case the timing chain had actually broken. This issue seems to be widespread and Mini na needs to issue a recall on this particular part for the model years that this design defect has affected. Prior to this issue, I had only owned the vehicle for 6 weeks and was purchased from motor city Mini, which is an official Mini dealer. This vehicle also went through an inspection before being sold to me.

68 Engine And Engine Cooling problem of the 2007 Mini Cooper S
