5 Engine Cooling System problem of the 2009 Mini Cooper S

Failure Date: 08/18/2011

I have a 2009 Mini Cooper S with 27,000 miles. Twice the engine valves has been cleaned because of excess carbon build up. Just look at the discussions on the web. Seems to be a major problem with car.

6 Engine Cooling System problem of the 2008 Mini Cooper S

Failure Date: 06/24/2010

Leaving from work around 5:00 pm (car had been in the parking lot since 7:20 am), I drove for a mile or less when at a red light the car by my side told me about smoke coming from the under the hood. I drove to the closet parking lot, opened the hood (there was a lot of smoke) and I could see 2 wires red hot. I went to try to get a fire extinguisher and luckily and ambulance on duty (could not help me because he had a patient) gave me a small bottle of water. When I returned to the car with the water there were flames about 10" tall on a small area, already touching the pipes the come out of the turbo (pipes that bring air into turbo and out to the intercooler) and with the 500ml bottle of water I was able to put it off. Daler (Mini of sterling) repaired the vehicle for free (car is under warranty). Dealer found that the auxiliary water pump shorted, and this must have cause the wires to overheat. Dealer replaced auxiliary water pump and wires and parts that burned. I spoke with the dealer and then with Mini USA, both refused to change engineering to prevent a future fire in case auxiliary water pump has a short-circuit again. Updated 1/27/2012.

7 Engine Cooling System problem of the 2007 Mini Cooper S

Failure Date: 01/23/2010

The car has been at the dealer every other week for the last 6 weeks. On cold starts the car would run rough, hesitate almost stall and the heat wasn't working unless you were driving or had your foot on the gas. Then the check engine light came on brought it to the dealer they replaced the timing chain changed the oil and bled the coolant. A few days later it stalled on a cold start and the heat still wasn't working. The dealer this time found excessive carbon in engine and a leak at water pump. Computer did not throughout a code for either. Dealer opened a case at the manufacture. 2 weeks later I brought it back when the windows would go half way down and the door would unlock. Dealer reset the windows and I went to pick it up to find the windows half way down and the doors unlocked. Dealer replaced the motor. 2 weeks later my battery light when on. On the way to the dealer the car died. Dealer said there was an oil leak the led to the alternator belt slipping off and my battery didn't charge and now is dead. I won't get it back until sometime next week. This car only has 26,000 miles on it.

8 Engine Cooling System problem of the 2003 Mini Cooper S

Failure Date: 02/24/2009

2003 Mini Cooper S with power steering failure. Power steering goes in and out. Car radio turns on when car is off and no key is in the engine, causing battery to drain. Once my power steering went out when I was leaving a parking area causing me to hit the car in front of me. I have not repaired damages. I have however replaced the engine due to faulty wiring in aprox 2009. A fuse that runs everything for cooling blew and gave me no warning the engine was overheating.

9 Engine Cooling System problem of the 2002 Mini Cooper S

Failure Date: 10/24/2007

I have a 2002 Mini Cooper S. The car?s engine cooling system has ongoing issues, particularly the coolant expansion tank. I have had to replace the coolant expansion tank three times within approximately 50,000 miles. This means my car is now on its fourth coolant expansion tank. Here is a short summary of the coolant expansion tanks that my car has had: date tank installed date tank failed/replaced car mileage when replaced when car was built June 19, 2004 14,130 June 19, 2004 October 23, 2004 17,528 October 23, 2004 October 24, 2007 50,143 October 24, 2007 not yet not yet the radiator also failed at 50,143 miles, which is an event I am also not pleased with. Additionally, it now appears--as of September 2008--that I may have another cooling system issue. I will be calling my mechanic soon to check into it. All of these failures of the coolant expansion tank took up substantial amounts of my time in taking my car to the repair shop and then going to retrieve it after the repair. And in one case left me stranded on the side of a very busy California freeway at rush hour. Additionally, I fear that the multiple failures of the expansion tank have stressed the other parts of the engine's cooling system (as evidenced by the radiator failure and the need to replace another coolant part). The local Mini cooper dealer replaced the first two expansion tanks under warranty and declined to replace the third expansion tank. After I complained--and after six months of follow-up calls and letters--they finally reimbursed me for the cost of the third expansion tank. In all instances, Mini declined to let me keep the old part--even though I asked each time.
