On 2008 Mini Cooper S, with approx. 12. 5k, complete failure of timing chain and components. Was just covered inside of dealer warranty, but even the deal admitted that this is a common problem. Online, other have report the same failure in large numbers. This should be a recall!.

3 Engine problem of the 2007 Mini Cooper S

Failure Date: 12/27/2010

Engine rattle at start up, engine will not maintain idle when ambient temperature too cold (as high as 20 deg f but more common as temperature drops) and can even die. Engine hesitation and stumble while accelerating and while maintaining highway speeds, regardless of engine and ambient temperature. Lack of engine power. Car may seem to be running fine but when accelerating the engine will stumble and hesitate, much like a missing cylinder, this causes the car to accelerate slower than expected regardless of throttle position. This can create an unsafe condition. Seems to be most pronounced at part throttle between 2000 and 3000 rpm but is still present at higher speeds and more throttle opening. Can also make the car stumble very badly when starting from a stop, causing the car to move forward a few feet very slowly before accelerating at a somewhat normal pace. This effect is similar to letting out the clutch too soon but happens even if rpms are brought up to 2000+rpm and the clutch is slowly let out.

4 Engine problem of the 2010 Mini Cooper S

Cold start problem, no power, lots of noise. Timing chain on r56 Mini cooper. There is a service bulletin but there should be a recall. It sounded like the motor was going to blow up!.

5 Engine problem of the 2006 Mini Cooper S

Failure Date: 09/16/2010

I own a 2006 Mini cooper and recently, at 62,000 miles had an issue with the cylinders losing compression. I was told it was due to carbon build-up which "pitted" the valves as a result of ethanol in gasoline. I was also told that this is becoming a frequent problem with Mini coopers because the car can not handle the gasoline with ethanol, as they are intended to be run on pure gas. So due to the ethanol mixture, this is going to be an issue. Shouldn't these cars sold here in the united states be able to run on the gasoline that is available here? I have used high-octane premium gas only in my car. I was told that I had done nothing wrong, yet was still financially responsible for the entire repair. I have an extended warranty on the vehicle purchased through the dealer and have followed the Mini manual in terms of fuel to use. They told me they are seeing this problem more and more frequently in the Mini. It sounds to me like this is a vehicle problem and perhaps deserves a recall. Is this something you can help me with? they cleaned, machined and tested the cylinders and replaced the valves at a cost to me of $4800. Thank you.

7 Engine problem of the 2008 Mini Cooper S

Failure Date: 11/04/2008

Very noisy drive train upon initial start-up; more significant when engine is cold. Noise abates as engine warms.

8 Engine problem of the 2008 Mini Cooper S

Failure Date: 10/01/2008

Engine compartment of 08 Mini Cooper S gets so hot it has melt the hood scoop. My hood scooping is bowing down and the car has 2700 miles on it. I suggest a recall and a heat shield to resolve this issue. Too many complaints on the forums.

9 Engine problem of the 2002 Mini Cooper S

Failure Date: 01/02/2008

When accelerating out of a toll booth, the engine lost all power just as I changed lanes in front of large truck. Fortunately, there was a pull-out on the left side of the road. If I had not been able to quickly pull over, the truck would have likely collided with my car. Turning of the engine and restarting it temporarily cleared the problem. It would reoccur whenever I used full throttle and the engine hit 5000 rpm. The problem turned out to by a sticky super-charger bypass valve. It is a well known problem, so much so that the dealer always have the parts in stock. Loosing all engine power is potentially very dangerous - BMW should fix this.

11 Engine problem of the 2003 Mini Cooper S

Failure Date: 06/25/2003

Mini Cooper S has severe hesitation when starting from a standing start. The problem is unrelated to throttle or clutch pedal position. Car bogs for a few seconds (when making a left against traffic it feels like an eternity) when in first gear at approximately 1800 rpm then resumes accelerating. Service advisor at dealership told me it's a "characteristic" of the car. Representative at Mini USA told me they are aware of the problem and are working on a fix. The is no fix at the present time and no estimate as to when there will be one. For the time being, Mini owners have to pray each time they enter an intersection.
