Engine Rattling And Whining Sounds Problems of Mini Cooper S

Engine all of a sudden starts making a rattling noise. Took it in to dealer, timing chain guides had broken and chain was stretched. Was informed there was a Mini campaign about this but my vehicle was not included. Expensive repair and potentially dangerous situation if chain had broken. Was informed after work was done that clutch was bad as well. Had driven the vehicle the day before without issue but after only 10 miles from the dealership car would not move from stopped since clutch would not engage. Extremely early for this amount of repairs to be needed, I question the durability of these parts and this brand. Both of these sudden wear failures could have been extremely dangerous if they had occurred on the highway.

First noticed the rattle while driving the car. Everytime subsequently after that whenever I turned the car on I would hear a loud rattling noise under the hood. Car is a 2009 Mini Cooper S with 38,005 miles on it. Timing chain and assembly needs to be replaced. Dealership quoted me $5,000 to repair. The car was just out of warranty and Mini USA didn't want to help out with repair cost. Seems like a lots of these fairly new cars have this issue. Dealership that quoted me said they had 5 they were working on just this week. They expected Mini to issue a recal but were surprised they hadn't. Guys in the parts department were all to familiar with all the parts that were required to fix the problem. They had them readily accessible and expressed their sympathy of having to pay $$ to fix what unquestionably is a manufacture defect. Please help us give Mini a friendly nudge into issuing this recal.

My car has been making a rattling sound for about 6 months. Because the car would not restart, it was towed to a Mini service department. I was told the problem was the timing chain, and it needed to be replaced. There are countless numbers of these reports on the internet. Inspite of the numbers of complaints and repairs, Mini/BMW has refused to take responsibility for the part. It was very fortunate there was no crash or fatality, again my car stopped in the middle of the road with very little warning.

The contact owns a 2007 Mini Cooper S. The contact stated that the vehicle would not start in cold weather until after three to four attempts. There were also noticed rattling noises coming from the engine while driving at various speeds. On another occasion, the vehicle stalled while driving 70 mph without any warning. The vehicle was then inspected by a dealer and they advised her that she needed to replace the vacuum pump, timing chains and the high pressure pump. Each part was replaced within one year of the failure. The manufacturer was not contacted. The failure mileage was approximately 50,000. The VIN was unavailable.

When starting the car cold (first thing in the morning or after it has been off for a long time), the engine makes a loud rattling noise sort of like a tractor noise when accelerating. It goes away after a couple of minutes of continuous driving, but sometimes when turning and accelerating at the same time, it also makes the same noise.

The problem can be reproduced 100% of the time under the following conditions: - start car for short period of time (back out of garage / wash car) - restart car for short period of time (move into garage) - leave car for 8 or more hours - restart and drive away.
