1 Gasoline Fuel System problem of the 2012 Mini Cooper S

Failure Date: 02/01/2023

The contact owns a 2012 Mini Cooper S. The contact stated that while driving, the vehicle failed to accelerate above 40 mph, with the check engine warning light illuminated. The vehicle was taken to a dealer and the contact was informed that the fuel pump was defective, and the fuel pump was replaced. The contact stated that approximately a year later the failure recurred, and the vehicle was taken back to the dealer and was diagnosed and determined that the fuel pump had failed again and needed to be replaced. The fuel pump was replaced under warranty; however, the failure recently returned a third time. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 87,000.

2 Gasoline Fuel System problem of the 2015 Mini Cooper S

Failure Date: 08/03/2022

The contact owns a 2015 Mini Cooper S. The contact stated that the vehicle previously had the fuel carbon filter replaced; however, the failure recurred while attempting to refuel the vehicle. The fuel tank dispersed the gasoline outward, spilling on the vehicle. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic who diagnosed that the fuel tank needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and advised the contact to file a complaint with the NHTSA. The failure mileage was approximately 67,000.

3 Gasoline Fuel System problem of the 2009 Mini Cooper S

Failure Date: 12/08/2013

Fire did not occur, but there is a risk. Many Mini cooper models with turbochargers are experiencing a leaky oil feed line to the turbo after approximately 25,000 miles. Due to a poorly insulated rubber gasket. It is a manufacturing flaw, but Mini has failed to acknowledge the issue. This is a fire risk. The oil is allowed to leak into the engine bay, and it can destroy the engine because Mini coopers do not have an oil sensor.

4 Gasoline Fuel System problem of the 2011 Mini Cooper S

Failure Date: 04/04/2012

As I was accelerating while merging onto a highway, at approximately 55-60 mph, it felt as if the car lost all power from the drive train. The power reengaged about a second later, and over the next 5-10 seconds the car lost power/reengaged two more times. No warning lights were triggered on the dash. I've taken the car into dealership and referenced service bulletin number sim12-02-11/NHTSA item number 10040855. Dealer reports that because it cannot replicate the issue and there are no reported fault codes, it appears that there is nothing wrong with my car, therefore it cannot confirm if I'm on most recent software or perform software update to fix error referenced in the service bulletin.

5 Gasoline Fuel System problem of the 2007 Mini Cooper S

Failure Date: 02/13/2012

Timing chain broke at 80000k after replacing tensioner at 60000k from oil leak. Also replaced water pump & thermostat due to car overheating. Now at 82000k have a burnt out valve. Big problems on my Mini Cooper S '07.

6 Gasoline Fuel System problem of the 2007 Mini Cooper S

Failure Date: 10/12/2011

As I approached the street on where I live, the car started to severely shake and jerk , as if power was not going to the engine. I was able to park it on my driveway, but the next morning, the car had to be towed to the dealer because it would not start. When the car arrived at the dealer after being towed in, the car could not be jump-started, even after several attempts. Two weeks prior, I had brought my car in for service because the check engine light came on. They replaced the timing chain and found several misfire faults, which were supposedly corrected. The cylinder head was removed and disassembled and found to have carbon build up. The intake valves and exhaust valves were cleaned. Since the incident, the car is still at the dealer. An extended road test is scheduled to be performed within these next few days. No word on what has caused the car's engine to die.

Failure Date: 07/10/2011

Improper idle. Stalling, deiseling when cold started.

8 Gasoline Fuel System problem of the 2007 Mini Cooper S

Failure Date: 02/01/2011

The vehicle will not start. This occurs randomly (mine has had this happen twice in the last month). Vehicle will not start for several days then apparently all of a sudden will start again. Vehicle was towed to dealer after the first time but they said they could not recreate the condition, so nothing was done. No codes were stored in the computer. This second time it has not started for the last 4 days. Engine will crank, I pulled a sparkplug and put it in the ignition coil and it would fire, but the engine will not start, like it isn't getting fuel. This could be a safety issue if you need to rely on your car to be somewhere. If it wont start I am worried that it could also die while going down the road, which would be a huge safety issue, although it has not done this, its just a concern. I do not expect a car that is only a little over 3 years old to not start. I have contacted Mini USA but they are hesitant to recommend anything other than to have it towed to the dealer again.

9 Gasoline Fuel System problem of the 2006 Mini Cooper S

Failure Date: 09/16/2010

I own a 2006 Mini cooper and recently, at 62,000 miles had an issue with the cylinders losing compression. I was told it was due to carbon build-up which "pitted" the valves as a result of ethanol in gasoline. I was also told that this is becoming a frequent problem with Mini coopers because the car can not handle the gasoline with ethanol, as they are intended to be run on pure gas. So due to the ethanol mixture, this is going to be an issue. Shouldn't these cars sold here in the united states be able to run on the gasoline that is available here? I have used high-octane premium gas only in my car. I was told that I had done nothing wrong, yet was still financially responsible for the entire repair. I have an extended warranty on the vehicle purchased through the dealer and have followed the Mini manual in terms of fuel to use. They told me they are seeing this problem more and more frequently in the Mini. It sounds to me like this is a vehicle problem and perhaps deserves a recall. Is this something you can help me with? they cleaned, machined and tested the cylinders and replaced the valves at a cost to me of $4800. Thank you.

10 Gasoline Fuel System problem of the 2008 Mini Cooper S

Failure Date: 06/20/2010

2008 Mini Cooper S. The vehicle had a complete electrical and engine failure with no notice. While driving on interstate 287 in NJ with absolutely no notice the car lost total power. Every warning light illuminated on the dash, all gauges dropped to zero, no power whatsoever from the engine, no way to open windows or door locks as their was a complete and total electrical and mechanical failure of this vehicle - there was absolutely no notice. One moment the vehicle was operating normally and the next I had complete and total mechanical, engine and electrical failure rendering the car disabled and without power in the middle lane of interstate 287 south in morristown NJ. Vehicle brought to Mini dealer; vehicle there for almost 2 weeks-supposedly "fixed". The same problem happened a second time within 100 miles of that first service. Vehicle brought to Mini dealer again. Happened a third time for the service technician while he drove the car home from princeton to PA. Vehicle was at Mini for another 2 and one half weeks. Now they say it is fixed and I do not feel confident they are correct. This problem is without warning and leaves the vehicle permanently disabled in a total and complete way that can lead to serious injury or death for the occupants. Mini customer service was abhorrent. They would not return calls and stalled time and again when asked to repurchase this vehicle which is clearly unsafe. They will do nothing. The NHTSA must investigate. The only part they tell me is wrong is the footwell module but will be no more specific. Mini must be held accountable for this defect and failure; this is of very serious nature. Again, the car completely fails-everything-engine, electrical, all power you can not open door locks, windows or the rear hatch. The engine losses all power. Please investigate.
