Mini Cooper S owners have reported 23 problems related to seat belt (under the seat belt category). The most recently reported issues are listed below. Also please check out the statistics and reliability analysis of Mini Cooper S based on all problems reported for the Cooper S.
Our vehicle has the airbag light on and I am am very concerned with the safety of our family. After researching this issue, there are many Mini owners that are having the same problem which leads me to believe that this is deeper than an isolated issue on my vehicle. I also found out that this has been an issues that was converted into a recall for several years before. Mini should considered doing an investigation and extending the recall to other year models including my 2012.

Warning message for seat belt tension/air bag malfunction and both lights are on. The vehicle has 40+ thousand miles on it, I am a second owner. This problem just started on may 29, 2020. No accidents for this vehicle. Cost for repair is over $2000 and so far there's only recalls for 2008 convertible which I totally don't understand. This looks to be an ongoing problem with the Mini and needs to be addressed due to the air bags being affected. I currently have no photos but can readily supply photos upon request. The seat belt light/air bag emblem shows on the dash screen when entering the key while stationary, no one is sitting in the passenger seat when this happens and does not go away when occupied.

Airbag and seatbelt warning lights come on for passenger seat and will not turn off. It indicates that the passenger airbag will not activate in the event of an accident with an occupant in the passenger seat. Front passenger will not have airbag protection in the event of a crash.

I have a 2006 Mini Cooper S. Airbags replaced due to recall (2015 or 2016) at Mini dealership. Now, may 15, 2018, seatbelt/airbag red light on on console. No airbag light on near mirror. Nothing on passenger seat - I am belted when I drive. This happens as I turn on ignition and stays on.

Seat belt warning light comes on when starting car. Called local Mini dealership and was told there was an "extended warranty" for seat mat sensor.
Seat belt on driver side of the convertible was rolling up on one side and not providing adequate safe restraint. Was told by dealership that I was pulling the seat belt out with my left hand and sitting too close and that I should be pulling the seat belt out with my right hand. Owners manual did not provide this information. Contact with BMW of north America did not resolve issue. When I told the dealership service person that this was a design flaw if you can only use one hand to pull the seat belt and sit a certain way, she agreed that it was. I told BMW the same when I spoke to them today and told them I was filing a formal complaint with the NHTSA about the seat belt design.

2007 Mini Cooper S, hatchback. The passenger airbag (off) light, indicating the passenger airbag is disarmed, is on at all times regardless of passenger. Additionally, the dashboard warning lights for my airbag system and seatbelt are illuminated at all times. The codes identified by the Mini dealership in honolulu indicate the passenger seat occupancy sensor has a fault. Looking under the seat, it could be a faulty wiring harness or faulty connecter as they appear vulnerable to seat movement forward or backwards. The Mini dealership also stated the obnoxiously expensive part was on national back-order.

After battery went dead, replaced with new battery and shortly after air bag light illuminated. Had independent shop clear code in 2015 inspected harness found nothing out of ordinary. 3 days later air bag light returned. Now in February 2018 had Mini of towson diagnose air bag light thinking the dealership can reset air bag light properly. Dealership recommended upgrading wiring harness under seat for 525 dollars. I have been on multiple forums and this air bag light is a common problem for 02-03 Minis, including 05-06, and 12-15 year Minis. My concern is that Mini knows this is a defective part from the manufacturer but refuses to stand by their product even when it could affect the safety of the purchaser of its vehicles. In the event NHTSA receives enough complaints to force Mini to issue a recall for this issue, I would like to be included as another dissatisfied consumer. Thank you for your time, garrett.

Passengers air bag appears off when someone are seat. This evolve a serious safety issue in case of accident.
Airbag and seatbelt light remain on in the vehicle. I will not pay the outrageous amount of money the dealership wants the fix or replace whatever is wrong with it. Maybe ill be the first person injured because of this fault that a recall actually is issued for this defect.
The passenger seat belt sensor light stay on continuously car is started, regardless anyone in the seat. This is a safety issue and should be recalled by manufacture.

My 2004 Mini Cooper S has a passenger seat belt/air bag light that is illuminated at all times. Originally, it was sporadic, and connecting the seat belt would cause the light to go off. Now it is lit all the time, whether there is a passenger in the seat or not. I was told today that the sensor is bad and will cost $1600 to fix, which includes completely replacing the entire passenger seat. My mechanic says that the air bag will not deploy in the event of an accident. This is most concerning. Obviously, the default should be for the airbag to deploy. What if I am in an accident and my passenger is gravely injured (or killed!)?? unacceptable! I have read that BMW has issued a recall for BMW models with a similar problem. Mini Cooper Should be included in the recall, as they are made by BMW, often using the same parts! where is the oversight?!?.

Airbag failure light came on. . . After researching this problem, this is a known issue but the manufacturer will not cover this under warranty. 700. 00 to diagnose and fix the issue (conservative estimate) called Mini USA, and they will not issue a recall even though thousands of people have had the same issue.
I have been getting the air bag warning light (in red) coming on while driving the car ¿ started in February, 2015. I've told that Mini/BMW is aware of this issue, but is not making any movement on establishing a safety recall on affected cars. Warning light comes on regardless of how many passengers are in the vehicle. Sometimes the light comes on and stays on, other times it cycles through on-off, with the audible warning, several times a minute.
When passengers or items were placed on the passenger seat the seatbelt and airbag warning lights would illuminate on the dash, but would go out after passenger or items were removed, and/or seatbelt was fastened. As of now both the airbag warning and seatbelt warning lights are illuminated, at all times, on the dash and will not return to normal state whether seatbelt is fastened or not. The airbag safety system is now disabled under normal driving operation due to these failures (airbag/seatbelt not ready state).
The front passenger side seat belt does not engage and lock on an intermittent basis. When the problem occurs, we are faced with the choice of sitting for 5-10-15 minutes trying repeatedly to get the seat belt to engage and lock, or taking off without buckling the front passenger until the problem clears up, or transferring the passenger to the rear seat until the problem is resolved. Ridiculous. The servicing dealer (morristown Mini) cannot replicate the issue, which is not surprising, since the problem is intermittent. They do not want to repair/replace any parts since they cannot replicate it. I called Mini at their corporate 800 number but they state they can do nothing; the have merely logged the complaint. I had purchased an extended Mini maintenance program upgrade and also a 3rd party extended warranty from the dealer that sold me the car, princeton Mini in princeton NJ. Apparently those offer no relief, either, as I called both them and Mini and was told seat belts are excluded once out of warranty. So at this time I have a rolling safety and liability hazard pertaining to a front passenger seat belt that neither the dealer nor manufacturer wish to address. Please help! thank you.
The airbag sensor in the seat cushion has failed and a warning light now permanently shows on the instrument panel. The passenger airbag may not function as designed.

Passenger side "air bag" off light is on all of the time and thus, the passenger air bag will not be deployed in an collision. Have had sensor worked on, system flashed by BMW, etc to resolve issue. BMW unable to resolve without extensive cost.

After multiple frustrating complaints and unsuccessful service attempts on 8/17/11, 9/1/11, 9/6/11, 9/21/11 and 9/28/11 for my 2007 Mini Cooper S (purchased on 8/16/11) at mayors auto mall SAAB located at 6001 northern boulevard, woodside NY 11377 and failing inspection on 9/1/12; I was fed up and brought my vehicle directly to hassel BMW Mini of freeport located at 100 cleveland avenue, freeport NY 11520 on 10/31/11. After a service bill of $3,546 (service) +$141. 21 (evaluation fee) = $3,688. 03 from BMW Mini, the problems were still not resolved. I then filed a lemon law case against mayors auto mall and won on. Despite winning the case, mayors auto mall refused to return my monies for the purchase price of vehicle. After contacting dmv with the issue and having them suspending their business license, mayors auto mall finally refunded my monies for vehicle purchase but it was excluding service bills of $3,688. 03 from BMW Mini since lemon law did not cover this amount. I am filing a complaint against BMW Mini and would like to find out possible remedies for getting a refund services paid towards a vehicle that I no longer have due to lemon law case and am out of $3,688. 03 for no reason. I understand BMW Mini is currently being sued for these same issues by many consumers. Please contact me with any possible information you may be able to provide regarding my case. I am in awe shock that I am still dealing with this and it has been 3 years already since I had to return the car to mayors auto mall. Thank you for your concern with this matter and would appreciate any information you are able to provide.
I was involved in a multiple car accident. None of the air bags deployed and the seat belt did not hold me appropriately resulting in hitting the steering wheel with my face. I had head concussion and multiple face bruises, including a deep cut in my lip. Mini (BMW) is investigating.
Defect initially occurred at night time in rush hour traffic: dash-lights went out, turn indicator not functional, heater blower stopped working (causing fogging of windshield/windows), air bag lights went on, seat belt light on consequently had to pull on the side of road (limited visibility, no speed indicator, could not operate vehicle safely). A couple of attempts at ignition cycling partially restored functionality. After initial defect, problem could be reproduced intermittently (all/some of the component listed above failed during course of normal operation of vehicle). Vehicle inspected by Mini/BMW dealer, root cause: interference on k-bus of one of the audio component, resulting in failure/malfunction of other components on the bus. Ultimately component (Mini I-pod interface) had to be removed -- part is available if needed. Request to have repairs covered was rejected by Mini/BMW customer relations on grounds there was no recall (vehicle is 5 months out of warranty --- 41k miles).
The driver side seatbelt buckle does not release when the button is pressed. This started when I first bought the vehicle in February 2009. This happens everytime I try to remove the seatbelt. I have to jiggle the buckle to get it to release. Nothing has been done to fix this problem yet; the dealer will not warranty the buckle.
Was parked and went to start it and no warning chimes seat belt seat radio air bags.
