2 Vehicle Speed Control problem of the 2012 Mini Cooper S

Failure Date: 10/22/2020

I love my Mini Cooper S. But there is a issue. Today I started up the car and it starts smoking. Twice this has happened in two weeks. When I bought it 2 years ago I noticed on the inside of my hood of the car it's a black burnt mark. The dealership said the problem had been fixed. Last week I took it to a oil shop and they said my turbo is burning my car and would catch fire soon. I'm in the process of getting a new turbo but this is a big problem cause now it's smoking only when in idle or started up. But the hood is super hot after a short drive. I hope your crew can look into this part and save someone the terror of a car on fire. Thank you for your time.

4 Vehicle Speed Control problem of the 2014 Mini Cooper S

Failure Date: 08/08/2018

Drivetrain malfunction warning - appears and reduces speed at any time of driving - this could cause severe accidents due to loss of power/performance. This warning is engaged at anytime w/o warning. Software update for vehicle should be free of charge as this impacts loss of power. When taking it to auto mechanic, no codes are found and no engine light or fault code. Researching all f56 forum, seems like this has been common complaint. Even though the warning comes on and tells you to drive carefully (slow down). You are still in a high density traffic or freeway that does not allow you enough time to pull on the side. The software should be available to consumer as this impacts the speed of the current driving condition (which is not obvious to other drivers). If it was a flat tire, or smoke coming out of the hood. . This is visible. Mechanics cannot figure out the issue due to a "general / no details" to the specific issue. Therefore, the older software for this model and year should be considered a recall for hazardous driving. Furthermore, software updates should be notified to all consumers and detailing the items that the software will be changing. There is no communication or even on their website to show updates and needs for it. This is a problem if it has anything to do with engine and powertrain.

5 Vehicle Speed Control problem of the 2009 Mini Cooper S

Failure Date: 11/14/2017

This is the 2nd time this happend the car started to acelerate by its self when stopped and the brakes couldn't hold the car back, I then put the car into newtral, then into park tapped the gas and the car acted normal. It was like the car had a mind of its own and just started to go without my foot on the gas pedal . The last time this happend was a year ago . I thought it was a fluke but now it happend again, I am a very good driver but after this happend again I think I might just get rid if this car . . . It reminded me of the movie chritine when the car had a mind of its own. I was stopped at a light with a car in front of me, the weather was 45 degrees and was driving for about 15 minutes already when it happend.

8 Vehicle Speed Control problem of the 2009 Mini Cooper S

Failure Date: 10/17/2013

Total loss of power as I was crossing a major highway, car towed to local BMW certified mechanic, shows timing chain misfire, needs total replacement with multiple components needing replaced due to timing chain problem. 3300$ worth of damage to engine. Apparent problem with timing chain on thousands of Mini cooper and they have not called a recall on the piece. This was almost a major accident for me and is causing me thousands of dollars to replace and major inconvenience.

9 Vehicle Speed Control problem of the 2011 Mini Cooper S

Failure Date: 04/04/2012

As I was accelerating while merging onto a highway, at approximately 55-60 mph, it felt as if the car lost all power from the drive train. The power reengaged about a second later, and over the next 5-10 seconds the car lost power/reengaged two more times. No warning lights were triggered on the dash. I've taken the car into dealership and referenced service bulletin number sim12-02-11/NHTSA item number 10040855. Dealer reports that because it cannot replicate the issue and there are no reported fault codes, it appears that there is nothing wrong with my car, therefore it cannot confirm if I'm on most recent software or perform software update to fix error referenced in the service bulletin.

10 Vehicle Speed Control problem of the 2005 Mini Cooper S

Failure Date: 02/06/2012

The vehicle began to feel like the transmission was slipping: hesitation, wheels skidding, rough acceleration and deceleration. The problem continues after 2 trips to Mini cooper in which the car's computer was "reset" because no problems with the transmission were found. The problem described above persists, but there was also one episode where the car did not start and later turned off while driving on a congested nyc road.

11 Vehicle Speed Control problem of the 2002 Mini Cooper S

Failure Date: 12/14/2011

Loss of power when going 60 mph in the high speed left lane of four lane highway. Car went into "limp mode" and unable to accelerate. Car would only go 5 to 10 mph with large truck behind and bearing down on me. Eml and service engine lights on dash. Was able to pull into a construction lane that happened to be right there. Otherwise would have been unable to get car out of the way. Car needed to be towed. Fault codes list throttle body and wiring harness as problems and recommendation is to replace both. From my research, the problem is well known and relates to poor connector between throttle body and wiring harness. Mini has since redesigned the angle of this connector to fix this problem. Such a loss of power while driving is extremely dangerous. Should be recall item.

13 Vehicle Speed Control problem of the 2005 Mini Cooper S

Failure Date: 08/25/2010

I was travel at a speed of 70 mph, when my vehicle lost power immediately down to 15 mph. The engine did not shut off, but I could not accelerate above 15 mph. I was able to pull to the right because the traffic flow was spaced so I could safely pull over. There was no warning that this malfunction was going to happen. The vehicle was said to gone into "limp mode". The electronic belt was replaced that apparently controls the vehicle function at a cost of $3400. 00.

14 Vehicle Speed Control problem of the 2006 Mini Cooper S

Failure Date: 02/12/2006

Brand new Mini cooper convertible (1 week old). I was driving on a freeway in the left most lane. While I was checking the possibility to change to the right lane, the freeway curved in the right direction. The car entered slightly into the shoulder lane on the left. The speed was 65 mph. The moment part of the car entered the shoulder lane, it lost control and hit the shoulder. As a result, the car flipped over and dragged for about 5 seconds before coming to a stop. As a result of this crash, I incurred severe eye injury and significant head injury in addition to road rashes on head, hands and face. The car was totaled.

16 Vehicle Speed Control problem of the 2003 Mini Cooper S

Failure Date: 12/13/2003

My 2003 Mini Cooper S, upon acceleration, experiences an excessive loss of power that has put me in the position of nearly being hit by oncoming traffic when pulling into traffic flow. I have had the vehicle in to the dealer in cincinnati 5 times, and though they claim the vehicle is repaired, and drives 'normally' it still nearly stalls when accelerating from a standstill.

17 Vehicle Speed Control problem of the 2003 Mini Cooper S

Failure Date: 07/17/2003

Engine power loss starting off in 1st gear. When stating from a complete stop in 1st gear the car will hesitate for aprox. 2-3 seconds before the rpms increase. There is no combination of clutch and throttle that will alleviate this situation. The combination of warm temperatures and running the a/c contribute heavily to the power loss. Colder weather does improve this power loss.

18 Vehicle Speed Control problem of the 2003 Mini Cooper S

Failure Date: 06/29/2003

Purchased new vehicle (delivery date below). Vehicle has serious lurch and power loss in 1st gear, particulary w/ ac running. This poses significant safety risk as normal acceleration is not available. Maufacturer has acknowledged probem stating it is in the computer software--claims no fix to date despite repeated complaints and requests for fix.

19 Vehicle Speed Control problem of the 2003 Mini Cooper S

Failure Date: 05/31/2003

My April build 2003 Mini Cooper S experiences sudden momentary engine power losses, causing the car to violenty jerk during initial acceleration. Furthermore, the car will randomly and without warning, lose all forward momentum just when I need it most, as in pulling out into oncoming traffic. No matter how much throttle is engaged, the car barely crawls foward for up to 3 seconds, then finally roars to life and takes off. It feels very much like trying to accelerate a car from a dead stop in 3rd gear, though the car is in 1st gear. This situation is dangerous and needs to have the highest priority within bmwna/miniusa. I, as well as many others, have repeatedly brought this to the attention of Miniusa/bmwna and we are always told the same thing, that they are working on it. It has been over 6 months since these problems first began to surface. There has been no official communication from bmwna/miniusa regarding the issue.

20 Vehicle Speed Control problem of the 2003 Mini Cooper S

Failure Date: 05/15/2003

My 2003 Mini Cooper S stumbles and bogs down when starting in first gear. When starting from a dead start and letting clutch out, the cars power cuts off for a moment and then cuts back in. This was not a characteristic of the car prior to my dealer upgrading the software for the engine management system. I've contacted Mini USA (aka BMW) and they acknowledge the problem, but have no fix for it. I consider it a safety issue, especially when pulling into traffic and the car hesitates badly.
