Sudden stress crack appeared directly behind rear view mirror. No rock chip or other impact evidence. We'd just gone from cool (mid 50's ) to record heat (100) in 24 hours. Have less than 4,500 miles on the car. Came out in the morning to find the crack, which is approximately 6" long growing vertically. The car is a 2005 Mini Cooper S convertible.

: the contact stated while the vehicle was parked in a parking lot, the windshield sustained a small, hairline fracture. The vehicle was inspected by a dealer who determined a possible road hazard was the cause. The vehicle was taken to another dealer for further inspection who determined the windshield fractured from the inside and needed replaced. The manufacturer was alerted. Updated 2/6/2007 -.
Cracked windshield with no identifiable impact marks. Located just behind and to the left (if sitting in the driver's seat) of the rear view mirror. It wasn't there when I drove to work in the morning but was there when I went to my car at 5pm.
The front windshield on my 2002 Mini Cooper S auto cracked suddenly (with a pop) while I was driving along the freeway, with no apparent cause--no impact site on the crack. The crack originates in the low/middle area of the windshield, goes up about 2 inches, then sneaks to the passenger side about 5 inches.

I was traveling on the highway at the recommended speed of 65 mph with more than sufficient space between my car and the car in front of me and a small pebble smaller than the eraser on a pencil hit the top of my windshield and made a small star crack - this crack is smaller than the head of a nail. The crack continued to grow into an l shape, 5 inches long right behind the rear view mirror. This seems to be a common problem with the Mini windshield and the problem is fixed once you replace the windshield with a thicker glass. This could lead to serious injuries had a bigger rock hit the windshield.
Dear officer, I would like to compliant about a defective 2006 Mini cooper windshield problem. I have a brand new 2006 Mini cooper for about 4 months, but there was a couple of line cracks on the windshield already. The problem is not even caused by a rock chip and I think it is a "stress" crack that many many Mini cooper buyers has experienced. I took that to the dealer and asked them if it is under warranty and they denied it was caused by stress cracks and refused to fix it. This is totally unacceptable and I think it should be under investigation. Please take a look at the problem and hopefully it will get BMW/Mini cooper attention to fix the problem or at least take responsibility.
Mini cooper, Mini Cooper S and convertibles, dating 2002-2006. Glass pits and cracks easily. Each time this happens, Mini is not claiming the glass has a problem and you must replace at your own cost or through your insurance company. Have had 2 cars, and numerous friends with these cars having the same problem.
My 2004 Mini Cooper S, delivered in June of '04, having @ 20,000 miles on the odometer, is now on its third windshield all due to stress cracks. The cracks seem to be related to thermal instability. I. E. Cold outside/hot inside etc. I personally know of one 2003 Mini owner in MA who has now had 6 windshields replaced since purchase. The Mini community has determined that aftermarket us made glass by ppg does not have the propensity for such failures. I am reluctant to continue going to my dealer as this problem appears to be related to the foreign manufactured oem glass. On the other hand I should not have to replace the windshield with a non oem product, out of pocket to resolve the issue. For much more information, you can refer to the Mini cooper owners internet web forum "northamericanmotoring . Com" the defect is wide spread from the Mini's introduction in '02 continuing through to '05 production models. To find this information, go to "beneath the bonnet" and use the search function in the upper right corner for "cracked glass". Your assistance would be greatly appreciated. Feel free to call me if I can be of help. Sincerely,
mark williams cfp.

Windshield crack appeared over night.
I have had a second stress fracture in my front windshield in the past 6 months and Mini USA does not want to take responsibility. They know that they have a problem with stress fractures, but will not fess up to it. They are stating that there is a pinhead sized chip in the windshield, but since when will a pinhead sized chip create a foot long fracture in my windshield.
My 2004 Mini Cooper S had been parked, untouched, in my driveway for 2 days. I got in it last night and first thing I noticed was a verticla crack in the windshield extending from the top chrome molding 14" down, parallel to and 5" from the driver's side edge of the windshield. The local dealer said that Mini had a problem with windshield breakage in the past "but not now". At his suggestion, I ran the tip of a ball-point pen along the crack and found a "chip" at the top of the crack. This "chip" is smaller than the tip of the ball-point pen. I've had many new and used cars and this is the first case where such an insignificant "chip" has propagated to a total failure requiring replacement without even being visible first.
Cracked windshield on a Mini. Crack extends from right edge and goes towards center and then turns up towards roof - crack about 12" long. No stone chip anywhere along crack.
On March 5, 2005, a 2 inch x 2 inch l shaped crack was first developed at the mid bottom section of the windshield of my 2004 Mini Cooper S. The short arm of the l originated from the bottom of the windshield. On the next day, after parking inside my garage overnight, the long arm of the l propagated another 2 inches. Today, while driving, the crack further extended another 1/4 inch. The problem is that the crack started with no obvious reasons. The only sensible explanation is due to design of the body struture or defect from Mini coopers, and subsequently causes stress to the windshield. It does not take long to learn from the internet message board that many similar complaints or recurring incidents were also reported. One of the message board participant who installs windshield for car suggested us to file a complaint at this site because windshield problem can be fatal because of the followings: 1. Act as a support for the roof. 2. Act as a barrier to prevent passenger from ejecting of the car. . Cause airbag malfunctioned. I strongly urge the NHTSA to investigate this problem immediately.
: the contact stated the windshield has been replaced three times within 1 year of purchase . On may 24, 2006, while driving a small object struck the windshield causing a crack which caused the fourth windshield replacement. The contact expressed that something must be wrong with the vehicle to make the windshield crack so easily. The dealership and manufacturer were alerted and determined the cracks were due to the impact of the object.
Windshield cracked without being struck by object.
First occasion - windsheild cracked adjacent to VIN # location. Seperated from vehicle body. Dealership replaced but took 5 to 6 weeks. Excuse was supplier changed. Second occasion - rock chip on intersate. Result. Surface chip and laminant crack (1/4" to 1/2" long). Have not replaced windshield. Watching for any progression in size. I've owned other vehicles that had rocks and such collide with the windshield, but none that cracked so easily.
Our Minicoopers, 2004, received a very small chip. The next morning half of our windshield cracked from this chip. My husband spoke with steve, a Mini rep in houston, and was told the windshield had be recalled due to large amounts of stress on the windshield. He told steve that is exactly what has happened because the chip is so small located at the base of the windshield. We were told with the chip that the warrenty was voided. We would have to pay to replace the windshield. Steve went on to tell of 5 differrent stories of Mini owners having to replace their windshield in the last two months. If you look at Mini chat rooms, it is filled with many people having to replace their windshield, sometimes multiply times. It just does not seem right. So many windshield cracking due to rock chips. We would have had the chip treated, if it weren't so small, so a crack would not have happened, but there was no time, it cracked overnight.
BMW Mini coopers have defective windshields that crack repeatedly without any type of impact. The glass cracks due to stress or temp. Changes. Not related to stone impacts. Check out the windshield cracking thread on the Mini2. Com web site. We are on our 2nd windshield in two weeks. BMW is covering up the problem while quietly introducing stronger glass.
Large windshield crack suddenly appeared without evidence of any impact to the windshield.
04 Mini Cooper S had a crack in windshield of unknown origin (probably stress). Had fixed 2 weeks ago under warrantly. New crack has developed already. In the process of resolving current defect. These vehicles have a design flaw. You guys need to add Mini to the list of your cars. I am going to select BMW because bwm owns Mini.
Windshield in Mini coopers are to soft. I am fixing to have my second windshield installed. Just had one replaced in August. A rock hit the windshield both times. The second time if I had been any closer to the vehicle in front of me the rock would have come through and killed me or my 2 year old daughter in the back seat. Had a mechanic look at it and he said the same thing. There was at least two car lengths between my car and the other car. Also the windshield has many rock pits in it and it is only 7 months old.
Windshield replacements due to premature pitting, chipping, and cracking. Many other Mini cooper owners have experienced this same problem.
2004 Mini Cooper S windshield cracked from 1/32 inch "pit". . . Only 3,100 miles on car.
A 1" long vertical fissure (crack) just appeared overnight on my 2003 Mini Cooper S while vehicle was in a single car garage (and I don't have kids or pets), and was visible on windshield the morning of Feb 11, 2004. On the evening of Feb 10, 2004, this crack was not there. The crack originated at the bottom of the windshield from below the area of the windshield that is exposed to road hazards like stones and rocks, and no such hazards have hit the windshield. The crack is growing each day like my vocabulary about this problem. It is now 8" long now after 1 week and has hung a left. I've read on numerous Mini owners forums online that this is a common problem with 2003 Minis and that 2004 Minis have addressed the problem.
Windshield, cracked , for no apparent reason.
Mini Cooper S 2003 model purchased September 27, 2003 has developed a windshield crack near lower edge at center. Many Mini owners have experienced a similar crack, and Mini/BMW refuses to acknowledge a problem here. At great majority of these cracks are occurring in one of three places. Cracks are happening repeatedly to some owners (3 new windshields in one year for at least one owner. ) we would like Mini/BMW to address this problem and to reimburse owners for cracked windshields not caused by accidents.
Windshield cracked in lower center. Dealer claimed the crack was caused by a small chip in the glass. I could not see any chip in the galss. Dealer would not replace under warranty using guidlines set by the manufacture.
Windshield cracked three days after purchase. I don't remember any stone damage being done. When I washed my car (hot day), a crack developed in the mid-right bottom border of my windshield. I brought it in to the service department, and they told me it was stone damage.
2003 Mini Cooper S purchased new; at approx 4500 miles 6-inch crack appeared overnight in lower right corner of windshield. Vehicle was parked at the time and there was no visible damage anywhere on windshield. Since then, crack has progressed nearly to center of windshield. Took vehicle to dealer and was told that the crack was the result of a stone hitting the windshield. Service manager "proved" this by tracing crack with a ballpoint pen until it encountered a microscopic, nearly invisible "pit" along the crack. Dealer declined to replace under warranty. Personal opinion, supported by experience of other Mini owners: stress crack probably caused by incorrect installation or underdesigned windshield. In any case, Mini has been inconsistent in solution, replacing some customers' windshields under warranty and refusing to replace others, like mine.
I own a 2003 Mini Cooper S and like many other owners of Minis, my windshield is cracked in two different places. I do believe Mini should come up with a new design and do a recall.
The windshield on my 2004 Mini Cooper S just got a stress crack today. This has been a problem since the Minis introduction and was supposedly fixed with reinforced a pillars on 04s. It has about 2500 miles on it. Many Mini owners would like this problem to be resolved, permanently.
Excessive pitting on windshield on a vehicle with less than 10,000 miles.
