2 Power Steering Failed problem of the 2006 Mini Cooper S Convertible

Failure Date: 12/11/2015

The power steering in the car has stopped working, very hard to turn the wheel. I just replaced the alternator and battery due to the battery not charging correctly, now the electric power steering pump has failed and the battery light on the console has turned on. I noticed that there is a recall for 2002 - 2005 cars of the same type for this reason. I believe the problem to be the same and would like the recall extended to at least the 2006 year model. We went into an office and when we came out the power steering is not working. We drove it home and are now waiting on the parts to replace the power steering pump.

3 Power Steering Failed problem of the 2005 Mini Cooper S Convertible

Failure Date: 08/22/2014

Power steering suddenly failed resulting in near accident. Upon review of this site warranty extension on power-assist steering pump and cooling fan pump was issued. Despite the extension of warranty and lack of dealer or authorized service facility in lexington, kentucky, Mini refused to honor warranty unless customer towed vehicle, at customer's expense, to nearest authorized dealer which was approximately 80 miles away. Leaving warranty extension on known probable defective condition worthless. Believe investigation should be performed to determine if recall should be issued relating to power assist steering pump failures.

4 Power Steering Failed problem of the 2005 Mini Cooper S Convertible

Failure Date: 11/21/2013

Power steering pump on my daughter's car caught on fire about three (3) weeks ago while she was stopped at a red light, luckily she thought enough and turned the car off so the damage was only to the power steering pump and wiring harness . Once we discovered what had caught fire we did research on how to make the repair(s) and came across the recall for 2005 Mini Cooper S Convertibles power steering pumps, they are recalling them because they fail and sometimes catch fire. The recall is for cars produced until February 2005 and mine, according to the door sticker, was produced in March 2005 so Mini will not make the necessary repairs because they say they 'fixed' the issue. Once we got under the car and pulled the power steering pump off you could clearly see it was burned, the larger power steering pump connector was completely burned and melted together, we couldn't even remove the pump without cutting the wiring harness. When we got the pump off you could see the pump was burned on the inside as well so apparently there is still an issue with the power steering pumps failing and catching fire. I have been in touch with Mini north America again and again they refuse to fix the issued because well, there's not an issue, again according to them. There is a class action lawsuit regarding this issue so I will researching that avenue.

5 Power Steering Failed problem of the 2005 Mini Cooper S Convertible

Failure Date: 09/20/2012

Power steering pump failure resulting in hard to steer situation.

6 Power Steering Failed problem of the 2005 Mini Cooper S Convertible

Failure Date: 03/06/2012

While driving down straight road steering began to intermittently "tighten up" and become difficult to manage. Road and weather conditions were clear and dry. Next morning power steering assist failed completely while backing out of driveway, causing vehicle to almost hit a fence. Vehicle had been garaged all night at ambient temperatures. Power steering unexpectedly returned two miles later, causing driver to over-correct because of the sudden return of power steering assist. The intermittent nature of this failure is the most concerning safety issue, as the driver is unaware that effort required to change lanes or navigate a turn may change drastically and unexpectedly. Over-correction in traffic is frightening. Vehicle has not been subjected to unusual or extreme driving conditions.

Failure Date: 12/01/2011

At random times, the power steering fails, mostly at start-up, but sometimes while driving the car. I always need to turn off the ignition, and restart the car, which seems to temporarily re-engage the power assist steering.

9 Power Steering Failed problem of the 2005 Mini Cooper S Convertible

Failure Date: 10/10/2011

My daughter experienced complete power steering failure while she was driving her Mini cooper, nearly causing a collision with an oncoming vehicle. I drove the car afterward and could not believe how hard it was to steer the car (compared to a manual steering vehicle). I called Mini at their toll free number and was told that they had no recall notice from the NHTSA, therefore they had no obligation to fix this incredible defect. I hope it doesn't take a body count for the NHTSA to recall the 223,000 Mini's effected by this extremely dangerous defect.
