1997 mitsubish Montero 3. 5 liter automatic- crank shaft bolt has come out on 5 seperate occasions and has cost over $3000 to have it replaced. The inside of the crankshaft where the bolt goes is completely stripped to the point I now have to replace the engine. This is not an isolted issue as this appears to be an inherent problem with all years of Monteros. There should be a recall for this and Mitsubishi should cover the cost for there neglegence.

Our 2002 Mitsubishi Montero engine blew up while my wife was driving the vehicle on a local highway (rt. 680(n)). There was no indication that there was something wrong with the vehicle prior to that day (the "check engine" warning light had never lit up). At the time this instance occurred, my wife was driving the vehicle on the freeway as it went up in smoke, essentially endangering her life along with the surrounding motorists, should this really happen to a vehicle that is only 5 years old.

2001 Mitsubishi Montero; engine shot on the highway (NJ turnpike). There was no oil warning. This is a life threatening issue-if I had been on the inner lane, I would have been dead. Vehicles on NJ turnpike are traveling 60-80mph. Vehicle has been serviced on timely oil changes at jiffy lube. This should not have happened. It has 90k mlies on it, bought used, I owe $15k on it, it will cost $8k to fix. 2 yrs og payments to go.
The butterfly valve in the intake plenum in the 3. 5l dohc comes loose and drops into the motor which can cause it to stop suddenly, this problem is known by the manufacturer, which is apparent because they have made a replacement part to fix it; however, it is expensive and they do not help with the cost.

Consumer's vehicle had the same problem as stated in recall 00v311002 . The dealer would not repair the vehicle because the vehicle identification number was not included. The crankshaft bolt loosened which resulted in a lost of power steering.
The contact owns a 2002 Mitsubishi Montero. While driving 65 mph, the vehicle began to lose power. The contact stated that the vehicle feels as if it is driving 40 mph. He has taken the vehicle to the dealer on several occasions. The dealer is unable to determine the cause of failure. The engine size, failure mileage, and a valid VIN were unknown. The current mileage is 85,000.
The oil light indicator failed to warn that the oil in the engine was depleted until approx 30 seconds prior to the engine seizing. The rods cracked the engine and broke the head gasket mixing oil and water together. Everything shut down in seconds. No warning whatsoever. The dealer did not replace the recalled (00v-311) faulty crankshaft bolt because it did not appear to be cracked, the consumer feels the bolt should have been replaced and that the dealer should not wait until the component fails. Nlm.
