1 Tank Assembly problem of the 2002 Mitsubishi Montero

Failure Date: 12/30/2008

I started to smell gas when near the Montero. I thought it was another recall notice about a valve sealing but it got worse, and I started noticing a gas puddle under the Montero. I removed the plastic shield from around the tank and found an area about 9" x 7" had surface rust on it and the leak is from this. The plastic shield traps dirt and moisture in this location and caused this highly dangerous situation.

2 Tank Assembly problem of the 1999 Mitsubishi Montero

Failure Date: 11/28/2008

The contact owns a 1999 Mitsubishi Montero. While the vehicle was parked, the contact smelled a strong odor of fuel outside the vehicle. She also noticed a small amount of fuel leaking from the lower portion of the fuel tank. The failure occurred without warning. The vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer for inspection and they stated that there was a crack in the fuel tank. The fuel tank was previously replaced and under warranty; however, the authorized dealer refused to honor the warranty. The vehicle has not been repaired. The failure and current mileages were 88,000. Updated 12/30/08 updated 01/02/09.

3 Tank Assembly problem of the 2003 Mitsubishi Montero

Failure Date: 06/01/2004

Hesitation and stalling between 0-45 mph at slightly above 3/4 full tank of gas. Vehicle leaks substantial quantity of fuel when parked on incline at slightly above 3/4 tank of gas. In addition, this vehicle was not filling properly at the gas pump (pump continually shut off as if tank were full even though it was not). These same problem occurred with our 2002 Montero which was returned to Mitsubishi through the lemon law. These problems began at 26,000 miles, problems occurred with other vehicle starting at 9,000 miles. In the 2003, they have replaced the rollover valve (cracked).
