My car has broken down 3 times this year with the same problem. I had it repaired twice, then found out it had an open recall from 2000. I took it to the dealer yesterday, felt they dismissed my situation as I told them the car was doing exactly what the recall described and I was concerned it would happen again. I explained in detail about the 1st two repairs. My car broke down yesterday, after I left the dealer, and was once again undriveable. It is related to the crankshaft bolt. I sent the dealer a very detailed email about this final situation and to let them know I was filing a complaint. No response from them. The recall is regarding a bolt that secures a pulley. Each time this happened, the symptoms were the same, the car starts making rattling noises then will not steer, then is undriveable. These are the exact symptoms described in the recall as "worst case". I bought the car 2 years ago from a dealer but was never notified of an open recall, so just recently discovered it after reading online complaints from others describing the same problem. This third time the car broke down I was driving on a city street, straight, meaning not turning. The other two times I was also driving, but don't remember if I was turning or not. I do have documentation from a previous repair and my visit to the dealer yesterday but don't know how to upload from my phone at this time. The dates the car broke down from the same problem are Feb, 2016, June, 2016 and October 6, 2016. I am desperate to resolve this since I no longer have transportation. Thank you for any help, this has been an extremely frustrating situation starting in February 2016.

The contact owns a 2000 Mitsubishi Montero Sport. The contact stated that while driving approximately 35 mph, the steering wheel became difficult to manuver. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic for a diagnostic test. The mechanic stated that the crank shaft bolt had detached from the pulley assembly, causing the power steering to fail. There was a recall under NHTSA campaign id number: 00v311001 (engine and engine cooling:engine), that may be related to the failure. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and stated that the VIN was not included in the recall because it only covered 1997-1999 Montero Sport models. The vehicle was not repaired. The approximate failure mileage was 186,000.

I was driving along I-17 near phoenix, az merging onto I-10 west - when all of the sudden I couldn't steer the vehicle. All while going 65 mph. It took every bit of my strength to maneuver the vehicle safely off the highway to avoid an accident. I had it towed to mark Mitsubishi in avondale, az for repairs. After several days the "repairs" were done. The damage was due to the bolt - crank shaft pulley - I paid nearly $600 for repairs. Four and a half weeks later, the same thing happened, this time I was driving an hour from my home on 202 in chandler when I was getting off the highway, as soon as I got on the off ramp, I heard metal hit and saw something fly across the off-ramp. Again, I had my vehicle to towed to the dealership for yet another repair of the same problem. Then April 8th, again it appears to be the same problem, the dealership said they can't fix it a third time. They refunded my money from the first repair. A local mechanic was able to get the bolt back in, for it to come out again today, April 26th. There was a recall on this vehicle, that did not fix the issue. Now I have a truck that is not safe to drive and the dealership will not work on it. I was in two separate incidents with this vehicle at high rates of speed and was very fortunate that I was not injured and that I did not get into accident injuring anyone else. This is a manufacturer issue that Mitsubishi needs to be held accountable for before someone is killed or permanently injured.

The contact owns a 1998 Mitsubishi Montero Sport. While driving approximately 25 mph, the contact attempted to make a turn and the steering wheel seized without warning. Suddenly, within thirty seconds the steering wheel unseized on its own. The failure occurred sporadicly. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic, who stated that a faulty crank shaft pulley contributed to the failure. The technician also informed the contact of a recall under NHTSA campaign id number 00v311001 (engine and engine cooling:engine). The VIN was not included in the recall. The vehicle had not been repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 180,000.
I bought a 1998 mitsubitshi Montero Sport LS approx. 9 months ago and while it ran great about a month ago I started noticing when I would go to start it up it would act like the battery was going dead. So I replaced the battery. The problem still occurred. Then about 4 days after that out of no where the engine would start squealing. But that would only last for about 30 seconds. And stop until the turn would be off long enough for the engine to get cold. Well I was on my way out of town to see a medical specialist for my daughter's continuing medical condition and the truck just shut down in the middle of the highway luckily we were not hit by any other motor vehicles. After getting the truck off the road I looked under the hood, seen and picked up a pulley off the ground with a long bolt still inside of it, I later learned that it was a crank shaft pulley which had caused me to throw the timing in the truck. I lost my job, missed the doctors appt for my daughter and have been without a vehicle every since that incident on January 28,2009. Now I do understand that the truck is approx 11 years old but before I bought it I took it to the Mitsubishi dealership and had them inspect it and hook it up to a machine. They told me that for an older truck it is in great condition. And that nothing was work that they seen off found on the computer, with the truck.
The contact owns a 1997 Mitsubishi Montero Sport. The contact stated that the nut and bolt pulled out from the crankshaft pulley. While attempting to make a left turn at a stop sign, the vehicle failed to pull to the left. The dealer stated that nothing could be done to repair the vehicle unless the manufacturer approved the repairs. The contact referenced NHTSA campaign id number 00v311001 (engine and engine cooling:engine). The VIN was unknown. The failure and current mileages were 126,000.
I own a 1997 Mitsubishi Montero Sport LS. There was a recall for a crankshaft pulley bolt, NHTSA recall 00v311001. I took my vehicle to the Mitsubishi dealer and they replaced the bolt. This was back in 2000. In February of 2008 I was driving, getting ready to get on the highway when I heard a grinding and then a loud noise from the engine, I lost power steering and quickly pulled over. Popped the hood of my vehicle and noticed that the crankshaft pulley had broken off. I towed it to my mechanic who stated that the crankshaft pulley bolt had broken. He gave me an estimate of $2400 to have the crankshaft replaced, or $3100 to put in a rebuilt engine. I called mitsubihsi and talked to s lady who was very rude, she would hardly let me say anything. She stated that there was nothing that they could do and to contact the dealership that had replaced the bolt. That dealership is no longer there, went out of business. Looking online I have found numerous complaints about this happening to people who own both the 97 and 98 models of Montero Sports, even after bringing their vehicles in for the recall. If this had occurred while I was traveling on the highway I could have been seriously injured as I lost all power steering. I feel that this is a serious safety issue, I know that Mitsubishi issued a recall to fix this but their fix did not resolve the problem. I also feel that Mitsubishi should pay for fixing my vehicle as it is related to the bolt breaking.
The contact owns a 1999 Mitsubishi Montero Sport. When the contact started the vehicle, she heard a tapping sound. She drove the vehicle, approached a stop light, and heard three thumps from the engine. The vehicle stalled. The contact was able to restart the vehicle and drive to the mechanic. He discovered that the a/c belt was missing. When the mechanic attempted to repair the belt, he noticed that the crankshaft pulley bolt was loose and was unable to be tightened. He also informed the contact that the noise she heard was the a/c belt detaching and striking the engine. Due to the crankshaft pulley's failure, the a/c belt detached. The VIN was not included in NHTSA campaign id number 00v311001 (engine and engine cooling:engine). The contact took the vehicle to a dealer and found that the a/c belt detached once again. The current mileage was 123,000 and failure mileage was 115,000.
I was driving my 1998 Montero Sport and lost power steering in the middle of a major highway. My belts broke which I had to get a wrecker to tow my vehicle get it to a mechanic and he calls back with you have major problems. The reason the belts jumped off was the crank shaft pulley came loose and screwed the harmonic balance and other things up. I could have been killed or injured and I know this was a recall on the 1998's but I bought this vehicle used so I do not know if it was taken in for the recall and now my mechanic says sometimes repairing this does not always hold so he would not warranty my 800. 00 of damage. He did say this was a problem with Mitsubishi vehicles in the design and I was lucky it did not screw the motor up. Vehicles with this problem should not be allowed to be on the roads.
The contact owns a 1997 Mitsubishi Montero Sport. Her vehicle was repaired according to recall #00v311001 affecting the engine and engine cooling:engine the mechanic tightened the crankshaft pulley bolt. After six months driving approximately 10 mph the engine, oil, and brake light illuminated on the instrument panel. The steering column also began to tighten up. After inspecting the vehicle she noticed that the crankshaft pulley fell out of the vehicle. The vehicle was towed to the dealer since her vehicle was previously repaired per the recall. The dealer stated that the contact is responsible for the cost of repairs. The crankshaft pulley was replaced. Two months later the engine made a loud shutter then the pulley fell out of the vehicle again. The manufacturer did not provide her with any assistance. She has pictures of the failed component. The failure and current mileages were 149,000. Updated 02-11-08 the consumer stated she had to pay out of pocket for repairs $1,300. 00 and received a discount of $200 from the dealer. The consumer further stated the dealer also found another defect in the vehicle in which the consumer also had to pay out of pocket. The contact stated the crank shaft pulley bolt broke on 10-24-05. She had recall 00v311000 repair work done in October -2002. The contact wanted to file a complaint because she was still having problems with the crank shaft. She felt this should have been fixed properly the first time. She spoke to the dealer and to Mitsubishi. Mitsubishi told her to contact the dealer and it may or may not be covered. She contacted the dealer, and he told her that at the time of the recall they tightened the bolt, as stated in the recall. She though the recall notice should have stated the dealer should have actually changed the bolt.

Later the contact found out from the dealer that the warranty expired. The estimate repair expense would be $500. 00. He called the manufacturer and neither wanted to accept responsibility. The manufacturer would not pay for the repairs because the dealer did not repair it correctly.
