1 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 06/27/2025

I purchased a 2002 Nissan Altima from stone’s automotive in somerset, kentucky on [xxx]. I was told by the dealer that the oil pressure light sometimes comes on and he thinks it may have a weak oil pump. A couple of days later, I brought it to the mechanic they use, and at first, they thought it was just the oil pressure sensor or old oil. I had the sensor and oil replaced, but the oil pressure light is still coming on. When I returned, the mechanic told me it likely is the oil pump and advised me not to drive the vehicle anymore, as low oil pressure will ruin the engine. I was never told how serious this problem actually is when I purchased the vehicle. I didn't know you’re not supposed to drive a car when the oil pressure light is on, but the dealer should have known. It’s unsafe and could lead to complete engine failure or a crash. I am reporting this because I believe a car in this condition should not have been sold in the first place, and I am concerned it may be a recurring issue with this model or dealership. Information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u. S. C. 552(b)(6).

While driving down the road engine just shut off no warning no engine light just died.

3 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 02/27/2019

This can prevent the supply of fuel to the engine and cause the engine to stop, which could result in a crash without warning. If the manufacturer has failed or is unable to remedy this safety recall for your vehicle in a timely manner.

4 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 01/28/2017

Today aftter exiting my vehicle I noticed something hanging from beneath the car on the front passenger side. I opened the door and felt underneath the car in the area where the floor panel is and I was able to push the carpet up from underneath the car. Currently I am unable to view the area of concern because I am unable to get under the vehicle at this time.

Yes, I have a complaint about interlocks, I know the are to designed to save lives of others, but at risking the lives of the drivers that have them, it is unsafe to be driving down the road doing retest, I know a retest is to ensure that the driver of the car has not drank since driving or had someone else blow to start the car, but in my opinion it's hazardous to the driver to be put in this danger of having to retest every 30min, there is a camera placed in the car for a reason, yes I broke the law, I understand the reason for my interlock, yes I know I can pull to the side of the rode for retest, but in some cases you are not able to pull to the side of the road for them because you never know when they are coming, it took a child to point out the unsafe way retest are. Yes, I know I could have not had it placed in my car, but I have to work and provide for my family. Another thing I think interlocks are a money gimmick for the state and dealer that puts them in. I wasn't court ordered to have one, the judge in my case, said I could've had a restricted license, but the state of moter vicheleso said I had to have one to keep driving. When is the judges judgement not good enough?.

7 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 01/20/2016

I have a 2002 Nissan Altima that I took to get inspected. The car failed inspection due to heavy corrosion in the floor boards. The inspection station indicated that they could not pass inspection because the car was unsafe and any passengers foot could push thru the floor boards. I contacted the local Nissan dealership, however, they indicated that there are no recalls for this VIN # and could not fix the issue in house. It will need to go to a body shop. When I got off the phone with the dealership, I searched the internet and discovered this to be a design issue with the floor pan not draining properly. There is a class action lawsuit for Nissan Altima owners, just wanted to see if there was something that your organization may be able to help out with. Please let me know something on this. Thank you.

8 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 09/18/2015

I was involed in an accident going around 40 mph when the collision happened. My entire front end of my car was crushed to and beyond the radiator, as well as the hood bent like an a shape. None of my air bags deployed at all and Nissan has not contacted me after there first email saying someone would be in contact with me within 2 to 3 days. I was driving in the right lane on a two lane road when a vehicle from the left lane moved over right in front of me and locked up their brakes for no reason. I didn't even have time to hardly hit my brakes before we colliding. The was a police report and everything , but know they cant find the driver of the other vehicle and I cant get Nissan to talk to me about why my airbags would not work at a crash at that speed. This took place in a city. I still have not gotten any police report or anything and its been almost a month. Im having doctor bills pile up and don't know what to do.

Well one day I was going grocery shopping and we get to the store take the key out the ignition lock the car up. So when I come out the grocery store get in the car my ignition was like it was locking up on me. So I played with the ignition for about a hour then finally my car turned over. Now its a brand new start and ignition switch on there and it keeps doing the same thing I really thing this is a safety problem or there should be a recall on this.

10 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 03/01/2015

Purchased vehicle pre-owned,seller appeared honest & truthful about the vehicle, however after about 2 weeks of ownership I noticed high oil consumption, probably about a quart a week,,didnt think much about it,except that I probably have bad rings,or leaking intake valves/seals and would require costly engine repair. My daughter came home one day and mentioned the car wouldnt go over 15 mph,so I took it for a ride & as she said, intermittantly the vehicle would only go 15-20 mph, rendering the car unsafe to drive,,when I got back with the car I opened the hood only to see the front catalytic converter was glowing bright orange and no exhaust exiting the tailpipe,,,I know enough about cars to know that can only mean the converter is clogged solid,,,,inquired at a local Nissan dealer what the warranty was on the the cat and they said it was 8 yrs,80k miles,,,did some research on the web and find out theres a recall on it,the cat coming apart & pieces of it getting sucked up into the intake causing catastrophic engine damage,,,Nissan was replacing the cats, installing heat shields, and replacing engines to to the defect of the cat,,,,,dealer says he cant help me,,,,,check the web,its an ongoing problem with the Altimas as well as the sentras,,,this is something that Nissan knows is an issue and should take care of this. .

Rust problem underneath driver & passenger side. Floorboards are rusting out. Nissan is aware and is doing nothing. I am 61 years old and don't have the money to get this problem fix. I'm driving every day praying nothing will happen to me or my grand kids. Nhtsa needs to look into this before someone is hurt or die from this problem that Nissan knows about. I found this out just by accident-went on website see if my car was on the list for recall on the air bags issues. Over 400 complaints on Nissan website under complaints.

My car is burning 3 quarts of oil evry 2 weeks. . I tryd replacing parts. . Using different oil. . Nothing works. . I looked online to get some ideas of what the problem might be. . But most people with the same model have the same problem and still haven't found a answer.

I have a general question please. Someone in my home purchased above mentioned car recently from dealer and was never told of the recall or the problems these cars have. When my friend called the dealer asking why the oil continued to be eaten up, they responded that it was normal. Tonight this individual drove it home from work, it acted up, and had "engine over temp" according to machine that gives codes when there are problems, and said other codes about random multiple cylinder misfire. Could this be related to the recall you issued on this 2002 vehicle. Also what can she do to ensure her safety. This person was sold this without being told. How can we ensure the company complied with the recall and "fixed" safety issues?the recall information sounds very dangerous.

15 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 07/08/2014

I brought my car in 2002 from Nissan. I have had this car now for 12 years and Nissan is the only place I take it to always have it serviced. My milage on it is very low as I don't do a lot of driving. I love my Altima and haven't had any major problems or concerns with it. On July 8 2014, I told my car in to have it service while waiting for it the receptionist came and asked me had I considered buying another vehicle, I said no I'm not able to and my car I don't have any problems at all with it. She said follow me I need to show you something. Lord and behold my car was up on the lift and what did they show me but these two heavily rotted areas on my driver and passenger side floor. All I could say when I seen it was that is definitely a safety hazard for not only me but also a passenger that sits in my front seat. Yet Nissan don't want to take any fault for this and the many other 2002 Nissan Altima that this is and has happen to with these vehicles. I live on a limited income and feel they should be the one to repair the rotted floorings on the many vehicles that have rotted flooring. Thank you for allowing me to send a report on my 2002 Nissan Altima heavily rotted floor that they had never informed me of until it is now heavily rotted and my foot or a passenger foot can now end up at any given time going right through the floor when I am sure that they knew much earlier that my floor was rusting out and they just waited till now when it is heavily rotted. Feeling disgusted and very disappointed with Nissan.

The Cadillac convertor below threshold light came on then afterwards it got sucked up into engine and caused the engine to burn oil redicolously fast causing me to buy hundreds of dollars in oil and oil changes. Now the engine doesn't run right it seems and needs to replaced among with Cadillac convertor.

17 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 04/18/2014

When retrieving my car after an oil change the mechanic asked me if I knew the passenger side floor board is rusting and falling apart. He took a piece that came lose and showed it to me. After checking complaints on this I found several not just for the passenger side but also the driver side floor boards. I have smelled exhaust as well.

18 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 04/01/2014

Nissan Altima 2. 5 auto transmission. Nearly killed me. Car suddenly went to 20 mph on the interstate in heavy traffic with 18-wheel 30 ton vehicle behind me. Burns oil like crazy. Put in better synthetic oil, burns faster. Had the car die on the interstate at 75mph right in front of an 18-wheeler. Could have died. Could have been killed by the Nissan corporation. Know any good lawyers? this is really dangerous, Nissan should recall and replace this engine. Replaced catalytic converter, O2 sensor, pre-catalytic converter, spark plugs, some other related stuff. Burns oil even faster than before. Completely ran out of oil in 300 miles. I am trying 10-40 oil to see if the oil burning problem will slow down. Car only has 125000 miles on it. Complete pos. Never buy a Nissan, I never will again. This was my first, only 125k on it. I am used to selling perfectly good Ford and vws at 250k miles. On the internet most people fail the pre-cat and catalytic converter by 95000 miles, then overheat and blow the entire engine. Cars stopping suddenly at 75 miles an hour are going to kill people. Since Nissan is well aware, this is pre-meditated murder. Other symptoms: no power, no acceleration, no response by Nissan dealer. Nissan "service" is a joke. Never take a car to Nissan for repairs. Unrelated sign of really really bad engineering: paint is falling off car. Never had that happen to a car before, I have a 14 year old Ford with 240k and the original paint job, even though it is not garaged.

19 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 02/07/2014

I was turning my car on the corner of my block. My passenger who was about to get out the car stepped one foot out of the car and the other foot went through the carpet and landed outside of my car underneath. I got out the car and noticed that my passenger side underneath was rusted and had a big hole in it. I than looked on my driver side and seen that that side was the same but not as bad. I went to get an estimate and the mechanic said it would be $800 to fix my 2002 Nissan Altima. I can not afford to get my car fixed. I tried to sell it but no one was interested in buying due to the holes. Riding around in the winter was very cold and when it rained it would soak up the carpet that's hanging and felt like it made my car ride heavy. I would hope that Nissan could look at this problem and see how dangerous it is to drive a car with holes in the bottom.

20 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 08/24/2013

My automobile tcs off slip light came on and the car lost acceleration. Once car shutoff the vehicle hesitates for a length of time before it will start. This has occurred for 3 days in a row. I am so afraid this car is going to cause an accident.

21 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 08/06/2013

I have a 2002 Nissan Altima 3. 5 I bought new. It has 83000 miles. Like others, my floor pans on both the driver and passenger side have rusted out. I found this out on 8/6/14. It has been garage kept all these yrs. I was also told it was probably from the harsh winter and salt on the road. If this was true all the car's in NJ this year should have the same problem. I was told by a Nissan rep. They wouldn't fix it because, there are no recalls on it, it was too far out of warranty, and I live in an area that has a lot of snow and salt. I think Nissan needs to read their complaints on their web site and stop saying they don't know about this problem and do something about it. My estimate to repair this is $2800. I am also scared to drive it because of the safety hazard. When I step into the car it feels like I am going to end up on the ground. I was also told if I get in an accident it could be bad because normal floor pans help protect you. Please help all Nissan owners with this problem.

24 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 03/18/2011

When my 2002 Nissan Altima was about a year old, my vehicle began having difficulties starting in the morning. I live in sunny southern California, so our coldest mornings are in the high 30s. As a result, I don't believe that outside air temperature was a contributing factor to my vehicle not wanting to start. However, this issue never occurred in the warm afternoon. Ever since the initial instance, it has continued to happen a couple of times each year. I notified my local Nissan dealership on at least two occassions. Of course the problem never arose when I was at the dealership, so I decided to just dop the issue, as it didn't happen frequently enough to be of major concern to me. More recently; however, my car nearly stalled on my way home from my friend's house. I had to throw my car into neutral and press the gas pedal to prevent it from doing so. Ever since my car never wants to start on the first turn of the key. In fact, my check engine light is now on, and I have to pump the accelerator to get the car started. I had the check engine light code checked and discovered that there was a problem with the cam position sensor. Through online research, I discovered that Nissan recalled this part on some 2002 Nissan Altimas. As a result, I contacted two different local Nissan dealesrhips and gave them my car's VIN number so they could see if the recall applied to my car. Of course it did not. I also discovered through my research that numerous people are encountering the same problem, and I was directed to file a complaint with NHTSA which is what brings me here today. Please help to keep us safe from vehicles stalling in the middle of busy intersections. Not only is this a terrifying thought, but if and when this happens, it could be a fatal problem.

25 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 05/01/2002

This car has been a lemon since day one, in and out of dealership for one reason or the other, it started with the car running hard, dealership told me it was because I have broke the car in and now this is how they run, took it back again 3 to 4 more times with same problem, told them car idles high, shifts bad, runs bad, they said nothing wrong, I do alot of highway miles and as soon as I was over the miles and out of the warrenty they told me that the motor mounts were gone only 800 to get fixed, I was then hit by a car head on and really hurt I suffered major back problems , come to find out I probaby could have prevented some of the damage to my self if I had a saver car, my air bags didn;t deploy. I have had every recall to this car , the service men at the dealserships are the rudest men I have ever delt with. I was right the whole time !!!!! I have also experienced the same thing with the lights cost around 800 to fox kept changing the lights not to mentions the tickets I recieved from the cops , I explained to them the light keeps going out, they are like this is a 02 that doesn't happen, if they only knew!!! I am really tired of this car , now I was just told that the car has another problem, it over heats they think it might be the therostat but they don't know. How much money will that cost me??? I am one angry person when it comes to this car!!!!!!!.
