Toyota prius hybrid recall - Toyota hybrid prius system which is currently under two hybrid system recalls used by Nissan Altima Hybrids 2007-2011. My vehicle unexpectly and suddenly loss engine power while driving on the highway, no warning lights or prior mechanical issues prior to this event. Vehicle was towed to a Nissan dealership, where it was diagnosed to the engine wiring hardness which connects to the engine control unit (hybrid computer)and damaged multiple electrical system components (ecu, coils, and auxilary battery. Was told car needed new hybrid battery, had replaced, next told inverter needed replacing, car still not working. Nissan engineer has now looked at car twice, last time 10/26 and still waiting to find out what is wrong. Vehicle stopped starting originally and was told hybrid battery pack.

Mechanic said diagnostic codes revealed need to replace cylinder head due to excess carbon buildup. Said it was a common problem they see. Car has used synthetic oil from beginning only 62,000 miles.

The steering lock assembly seized up while the car was parked, so the engine starter was prevented from turning on and the steering and transmission remained locked. This happened in the dead of winter and at near-zero temperatures, requiring a tow to a dealer and a $1200 repair, which Nissan later reduced to $450. I accepted this on condition it would not constitute a settlement. This is a defect that turns up in all altimas built during several months in 2008, which they have acknowledged. They offered a 72-month warranty after manufacture (not a recall, though customers clamored for it) just for this item, but unfortunately the defect tends to surface after this period. My car missed the window by 22 days. Many similar cases have been reported since, and none have been covered. Had the unit failed while the car was running, it is likely that the steering wheel and the transmission would have failed to lock upon turning off the ignition, leading to a hazardous situation. Being in the cold for hours was hazardous on its own, anyway, but I survived it.
While driving on the highway, the car lost power suddenly. There were no warning signs prior to this happening. I was able to make it to the breakdown lane without causing an accident. The car would not start back up. Nissan ended up replacing the transmission and the inverter on the car.
This is the second time I am writing to report a vehicle engine fire while at a complete stop involving my wife's 2010 Nissan Altima Hybrid at the intersection of rte 231 & I-495 service rd (e/b) in suffolk county, NY. Nissan was contacted, as well as my insurance carrier, met life, and oth sent independent arson investigators to examine the vehicle and identify a cause/origin of the spontaneous ignition while at a complete stop. Met life's investigator found nothing pointing to the maintenance or operation of the vehicle which would have caused or contributed to this spontaneous ignition. Nissan sent their investigator, whom in conjunction with the insurance investigator, identified the component failure as a wiirng harness near or associated with the power steering system. Nissan has contacted me stating they ". . . . Conducted a detailed inspection of the vehicle and found no evidence of product problem, failure or malfunction that may have caused or contributed to the incident". If the insurance carrier . . . Which paid me. . . . Absolved the maintenance and operation as causation of ignition (and they have a reason to find my maintenance or operation at fault to absolve them financially) and identified a wrining component/system as the cause/origin of the ignition, how can Nissan so blatantly absolve themselves from any liability?? there is no maintenenace recommended with this system or component, and as such is an implied warranty by Nissan. I am now in debt having to purchase a new vehicle which is considerably less than what the insurance book value of the destroyed altima (burned up at a complete stop!). My wife almost was trapped in the inferno. Nissan is accepting no liability, product warranty or responsibility for their product. Please investigate ASAP as every Nissan owner is potentially at risk! thank you.
While at a full stop at a red light at the intersection of I-495 (exit 51 e) and rt 231 in suffolk, new york, my wife's 2010 Nissan Altima Hybrid, while in electric hybrid mode, experienced spontaneous combustion in the engine compartment which occurred March 8, 2014 and ignited with visible sparks reported by eyewitnesses underneath the front of the vehicle prior to combustion. Again, the vehicle was at a full and complete stop at a red traffic light. Fortunately my wife narrowly escaped serious injury or worse. . . . . . With no vehicle warning lights or indication/anomalies which would warn her of the impending dangerous vehicle ignition. Nissan and metlife, my insurance carrier, are investigating but unfortunately it is in both parties interests to blame the other. . . . With me as the innocent victim caught in the middle. My fear is a manufacturer's defect is at the root cause and other unsuspecting potential victims are operating these vehicles. Please intervene and inquire as to this product's obvious falwed design and performance befor fatalities or serious injuries are inflicted on unknowning consumers. Thank you.
Starting system does not recognize the key fob. I can lock and unlock the car with the fob but can not start it. Inserting the fob into the accessory key port makes no difference. Research concludes this is a common malfunction that leaves motorists stranded and that the solution is resolved with the replacement of the steering lock mechanism. Again, this appears to be a common, known issue.
The contact owns a 2009 Nissan Altima Hybrid. The contact stated that the vehicle was idling hard for an extended amount of time. The vehicle was taken to a dealer on two separate occasions where the failure was unable to be duplicated. The vehicle was then taken to an independent mechanic, who diagnosed that the ecm needed to be replaced and advised for the repairs to be done at a dealer. The vehicle was taken back to a dealer where the repairs were pending approval. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 98,000.
A carbon buildup in the cylinder head causes the vehicle to shake and during initial start up and stutter/shake during acceleration. This build up is due to a design flaw in the cylinder head. It cause multiple unsafe instances when trying to merge with oncoming traffic and safely navigate in normal driving conditions. This is a know issue to Nissan and they have redesigned the head but are unwilling to help with the issue. This occurred on our vehicle with only 35,000 miles on it.

Went to start the car and the start control wouldn't recognize the key. Replaced the battery to remote key, this made no difference. The steering is not locked. [xxx] in riverdale city, ut. Checked it and said it was the steering lock component that is keeping the car from being able to start. They asked for VIN number, which we gave them and in checking they twice said it was covered under extended warranty, since there had been numerous problems dealing with the steering lock. They then called us the following day and said Nissan wouldn't cover the warranted since it was a branded title and said the cost would be $818, which we don't have and now the car is dead in the water due to this faulty steering lock. The steering lock unit (part number 48700-9n00b) needed replacement. The steering lock unit did not properly engage when the vehicle was turned off. Because the unit did not engage, the vehicle would not start. I was left stranded in a parking garage at night and had to have the vehicle towed. The nearest dealership was in alexandria, va. They charged $900 to diagnose and repair this problem. Since the vehicle had over 36,000 miles, it was not covered under warranty. This is a widely known issue with Nissan vehicles and is present on several online forums. Most of the steering lock unit failures occur after the warranty period, but before 60k miles. There is an existing safety recall for the 2009 Nissan gt-r model for the steering lock unit (campaign id p0309). This is Nissan's top tier vehicle. At this time Nissan has chosen not to issue a recall for other models to include the altima. Anyone driving a Nissan with this known issue can be stranded at any time.
2010 Nissan Altima Hybrid suddenly lost all power (both electric and gasoline generated) while moving in traffic. I had to cut across 2 lanes through heavy traffic (while coasting) to get to the curb. After waiting and shutting the car down, I was able to restart it. I took it to the local dealer, which simply said the car "showed no codes" and, therefore, was unable to diagnose the problem or make repairs. I consider this a major safety problem, as I now question whether the vehicle can be safely operated or taken on any long trips.
2007 Nissan Altima Hybrid- while driving at highway speeds (approx. 65 mph) the car shuddered and vibrated. The shuddering affected my ability to control the vehicle. I pulled over and had the vehicle towed to a Nissan dealership. The problem was diagnosed as carbon buildup in the engine. Part of the engine (including the entire cylinder head) needed to be replaced. Apparently Nissan is aware of this problem- since they gave the dealership instructions on how to replace the damaged engine parts- but has no permanent solution to the problem. The dealership expects the carbon buildup to reoccur in the future causing shuddering/vibrating while driving and possibly requiring the engine parts to be replaced again. The vehicle is currently 3 years old and has less than 45000 miles on it.
