1 Latches/locks/linkage problem of the 2022 Nissan Frontier

Failure Date: 06/01/2022

The contact owns a 2022 Nissan Frontier. The contact stated that while driving approximately 55 mph the collision avoidance system suddenly activated causing the vehicle to abruptly stop although no other vehicles or objects were nearby. Also while operating the vehicle the collision avoidance system warning message and display continued to erroneously appear on the dashboard. The vehicle was taken to the local dealer who cleared the failure codes but was unable to determine the cause of the failures. Also the contact indicated that the door chimes would not always alarm when needed and the front driver side and passenger side door latches would malfunction and the doors could not be immediately opened from inside the cabin of the vehicle. In addition the battery had randomly lost power and the vehicle could not be restarted. The cause of the failures were not determined. The local dealer and manufacturer were notified of the failures. The VIN was not available. The failure mileage was 1,000.

2 Latches/locks/linkage problem of the 2009 Nissan Frontier

Failure Date: 04/23/2010

Tail gate falls off when opening. The removable tailgate is both light enough and does not have a catch on the hinge to prevent the gate from falling out when lifting up on the tailgate latch with one hand. This can also happen if there is any snow on the back bumper. This is both a safety concern, as I had the gate fall off with a load of wood in my hands causing me to drop everything, and it damages the vehicle as the tailgate right rear corner gets caught in the body mounted hinge. The result of this is the right rear corner of the tailgate is bent ~90â°. I have taken this back to the dealer 2 times for the problem and filed a report with Nissan USA. Both Nissan and the dealer claim this is a design feature - removable tailgate. In observing other Frontiers, it is apparent that many people have this problem judging by the number of damaged tailgates are out there. Everyone I work with that owns a Frontier has had the gate fall off. In looking online - it appears to affect Nissan Frontier trucks back to 2005. Mine fell off 3 days after taking delivery damaging the tailgate, and does every time you open it if you don't use 2 hands, one to lift up the latch, one to hold the gate in the hinges. I have owned 3 trucks, including a 2001 Nissan Frontier for a period of 7 years. I am aware that tailgates are removable and that you must clean debris off the bumper prior to opening them. I was not aware the tailgate should fall out of it's hinges when opening.

4 Latches/locks/linkage problem of the 2006 Nissan Frontier

Failure Date: 11/01/2009

My particular problem has been taking place since about November of 2009. It began when I washed my car one day to remove some road salt and has been recurring since then. The problem involves the door lock becoming "frozen". When the lock freezes, I am unable to unlock the door with a key, remote, or manually from inside the cab. This now takes place almost any night when it freezes. If I decide to leave the doors unlocked at night, it allows me to get inside, but the door does not close when I attempt to do so. I found this out for the first time when I thought I avoided the freezing, closed the door, put my seat belt on, and began to drive down the road. The door opened by itself when I went around a turn. The only way to safely close the door was to lock myself inside. Once locked inside the only way to exit the vehicle is from another door. So when this does occur, I can never exit through the driver side door. So, I believe this has become a very serious entrapment hazard. The door will eventually thaw out after about 45 minutes of heat inside the car, but if involved in an accident, there would be extreme difficulty exiting the vehicle. In order to correct the issue, I used several bottle of deicer in the lock mechanism, but this did not work. I removed the door panel and sprayed all the moving parts in attempt to displace any water. This also did not work. I visited the dealership and they did not help. There service department did not know how to resolve the issue. After looking at several online forums, I also noticed that others were having the same problem. After seeing this, I contacted the manufacturer directly online two weeks ago, and have yet to even receive a courtesy return call. This is getting annoying and expensive. My gas expenses have doubled because I find myself having to start my car in the morning to warm it up, and/or driving around to warm and attempt to unlock the door.

5 Latches/locks/linkage problem of the 2005 Nissan Frontier

Failure Date: 05/11/2009

The lower hinge on my 2005 Nissan Frontier king cab pick up broke for the second time. The first time, it was replaced under warranty at 18,050 miles and the mileage at the second occurrence is 38, 567. I have also seen that many others are having very similar issues with these tailgates. If this hinge was to break while the vehicle is traveling, it is conceivable that the tailgate could fall off of the vehicle and/or fall off from one side. This could pose a significant hazard to the vehicles behind and/or to the vehicle itself. I contacted Nissan about repairing the tailgate and they informed me that the fix was my responsibility. I will have it repaired at the dealer but have been given no assurance that the design has been improved or modified to prevent its recurrence.

7 Latches/locks/linkage problem of the 2005 Nissan Frontier

Failure Date: 11/22/2008

Tailgate busted brackets. I have a 2005 Frontier crew cab with 28000 miles. This was bought brand new. I use this vehicle for trips and hunting. No hauling, construction or other heavy use. My 4 wheeler was hauled in it about 6 times. We drove to the mountains and just finished unloading our luggage. I went to close the gate and it wouldn't close, upon investigating the drivers side hinge had cracks and the passenger side was cracked. My truck was out of warranty by 60 days when I showed the dealer service person. They said they never saw anything like it before, even asked how big the deer was I put on the gate, and if someone was standing on it? I asked if they were serious, as this gate should support 1000 pounds! anyway I wa lucky that Nissan agreed to replace the 2 cracked brackets on the body, the 2 brackets on the gate and a 3rd bracket I wasn't even aware of until the dealer stated he had to order it in before it could be repaired correctly. Anyway like I stated, this vehicle is used for easy applications and the gate used very little. Sounds and looked like a bad design imho.

8 Latches/locks/linkage problem of the 2005 Nissan Frontier

Failure Date: 09/04/2008

I opened the hood of my 2005 Nissan Frontier to check the battery, and when I closed it the hood latch fell off. As a result I was not able to evacuate for 2 mandatory hurricane evacuations. The first evacuation was for hurricane gustav which caused little or no damage in my area; the second evacuation was for hurricane ike from which my area is still recovering. I took my truck to three body shops to get bids for repairs. All three, including the dealership where I purchased the vehicle, stated that because of legal liability and the location of the broken part the hood would need to be replaced. I have all of the old parts that were replaced.
