My son and I were in a major crash on a freeway, we were hit by a semi-truck, sent into a spin, hit by another vehicle and stopped by slamming into freeway guardrail. The car was totaled. My son was driving and airbags on the drivers side all deployed but nothing deployed on the passenger side at all.

After four years of owning this vehicle purchased new, the passenger side seatbelt warning light came on the dash. It indicated the seatbelt was not buckled while no one was sitting in the passenger seat. When buckled the light went out. Brought it to the attention of Nissan, service every year when they would clear the code and it would be good for a month or two, and the light would come back on like before. Last month on may 9, I brought the vehicle in again and asked for a thorough assessment. Nissan service said to make the light go out they would have to replace two passenger side occupancy sensors, totaling $1800 parts and labor. They did not have the parts on hand, I left with the vehicle only to find out that the intermittent seatbelt light that would go out when buckled, stayed on continuous now. Also noticed the illuminated airbag light stating the airbag was off. And that was also on at all times whether someone was in the passenger seat or not. When purchasing the vehicle new we also purchased a gold preferred extended warranty, that I believed would cover these parts. But Nissan, consumer affair said the the warranty will not cover those items. After a month of trying to get Nissan, service and consumer affairs to work with me, still no help. Searching online I found Nissan, has had numerous issues and even some recalls with occupancy sensors in the seats of many vehicles. It seems to be an ongoing issue with Nissan, regarding earlier model vehicles and newer models. Thank you for your time and your help.

Car throws a b1018 dtc, which is for the passenger seat occupancy sensor. The seat occupancy sensor failing poses a major safety risk, as it causes the airbags to not deploy properly in the event of a crash. This is a very well known issue for the 2011-2012 Leaf, and the only option Nissan gives to fix this is a full seat replacement, which is cost prohibitive at over $3000. Previously, a recall was issued for 2013-2016 Leafs for a similar issue, but the 2011-2012 was not included in that recall.

I did not have an incident(accident), I noticed issues with my car, that seem to be prevalent with other Nissan vehicles. This report is mostly proactive. I took the vehicle to the dealer for inspection and repair however was unable to come to a conclusion due to multiple inspection charges done by dealer but no fixes. Issue 1. Airbag fault warning light on the dash. Turns on when I start the car, and stays. I took car to dealer and they have done a computer reset to reset the light (based on an internal Nissan bulletin on how to repair that issue, with mention in the repair notes that a lot of vehicles have that issue. ) the reset didnt work and the light is back, now the dealer is saying that a whole sensor needs replacing as its prone to failure. Initial repair mentioned "code b00a0 stored for occupant detection system, but will not relearn. " zero point relearn will not complete. Referred to ntb19-071d. . . Ran the 75h reset, code clears. " secondary repair: 'b00a0 returned. Performed database search and found similar cases. Nissan recommends osc and sensor replacement. Performed bulletin again and error code is now 24h, not 75h. Zero point will not relearn. Started a case with Nissan and was advised to replace . . . [OCS]. . . And strain sensors. . . " issue 2: loud clanking or grinding noise when turning vehicle left or right until wheel stops. Went to get this repaired and was told that dealer found bulletin 12-055j and will "need to replace axle nuts and apply molykote. " paid for repair, and after picking up the car the sound is even worse, and upon bringing it back the dealer is saying that the noise is not due to past repair but vehicle will now need "both front strut mounts and bearings replaced. " the sound is the same, and a cursory online search shows that this issue is prevalent across multiple vehicles. Also, recently when attempting a u-turn, the steering locked up momentarily when I was trying to straighten out the vehicle, with that noise (clunk sound).
Air bag sensor fault, passenger seat warning on dashboard. Confirmed sensor failure at repair shop. Notified by Nissan that sensors are discontinued parts. No alternative solution suggested. This means all airbags in this vehicle are disabled. Car has less than 40,000 miles and has years of service life left. How is Nissan allowed to discontinue supply of an essential safety component?.
Dealer is mike erdman Nissan merritt island FL 32953 airbag warning light flashing red on console. Paid $260 for diagnostic check on July 21, 2024. They cannot fix it as an airbag sensor on the passenger side seat is malfunctioning and the entire passenger side seat must be replaced and part is not available or is no longer in stock. They may be able to locate an entire seat Nissan Leaf 2012 somewhere, but if they do (and they said probably not) it will cost $4000. 00. The seat is no longer made by Nissan and after market seats would not meet safety standards (they said). There is a published complaint list of well over 2000 Nissan Leaf owners regarding 2011 and 2012 Leaf owners who say there should be a safety recall as this issue has been known by Nissan and the 2013 and later models had safety changes installed for this issue but no safety recall was made for 2011 and 2012 models. I believe a safety recall to fix this issue is imperative.

Please see thread: [xxx] my 2011 Nissan Leaf's OCS has failed randomly. I pulled the code via an bluetooth obd reader and the Leafspy pro app installed on my phone: b1018-00 09 air bag occupant sens [unit fail] src-41. I took the car to a local dealership and was quoted over $4k for a full seat replacement with no eta as the part is on back order. There is no option to simply replace the OCS alone and there is no workaround from Nissan to re-enable the passenger airbag without paying the $4k for the new seat. Opened a case with Nissan consumer affairs who advised they could do nothing for me. The repair is more expensive than the value of the vehicle. Because Nissan offers no workaround other than paying $4k for a new seat, consumers are incentivized to bypass the airbag sensor using a 3rd-party box (see here [xxx] rather than properly repair it. This is a safety issue and Nissan should do the right thing in making the repair affordable or making an official way to bypass the sensor/enable the airbags. Information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u. S. C. 552(b)(6).
Supplemental air bag warning light started blinking on 9/24/2023. It blinks regardless of whether the front passenger seat is occupied. The OCS sensor for the passenger seat failed. This should have been covered by a recall. The dealer wants over $3,000. 00 to replace the seat cushion. I declined the repair. Dealer assured me that driver air bag isn't affected, so I'll operate the car without a front passenger. Dealer estimate: denied repair step step total: $3,687. 14 correction: inspected system, dtc b1018 for occupant sensor unit failure is present. Cleared dtc, when sitting in passenger seat, dtc came back on. Inspected continuity to passenger seat occupant sensor and found ok at this time. Diagnosis says replacement of passenger occupant sensor assembly (lower seat assembly) labor: $588. 00.
My Nissan Leaf is showing a warning sign that front passenger side airbag is disabled. I see that this is a common complaint from many 2011-12 Nissan Leaf owners. I would like to add my name to the list of owners who had a similar complaint and please update if you make Nissan do a recall for this issue.
My airbag sensor light went off for no reason. I took it into the dealership and was told that it would cost $3,700 to get it repaired/replaced since the seat needs to be removed. I am concerned that this safety issue is not taken care of and have read that many 2011 Leaf's are having this same issue.
My Nissan Leaf's airbag warning light is flashing, so I took it to the local dealer called mike rezi Nissan in atlanta, GA area. They inspected it, and came back with the OCS control unit & sensor failure report, and wanted a thousand dollars to replace them. While there is a OCS recall for multi Nissan models, and my car is left out, and the VIN# is not included in this recall. . . ** also called Nissan custome affair, and I was told the same thing about my VIN# has no OCS recall, and was provided no explanation ** ** the Leaf's been driving normal, no accidents, and clean record **.
Warning light is flashing and the airbag warning light is flashing. I took it to the dealership and they tell me this is not covered under a recall notice but I have hear other Nissan Leafs do have a recall notice for airbags. It is expensive to fix. Is there a mistake and it is covered under a recall notice?.

The left curtain and driver seat airbags were spontaneously deployed while driving. The driver seatbelt pre-tensioner was engaged and locked. There was no collision or abrupt motion. My wife sustained minor abrasions to her left arm and swerved to the right shoulder of the road. The car would not shift into drive and was towed. The cause is unknown and without warning.
Srs airbag light flashing. Code reader shows b00a0 0009 code indicating a problem with the OCS / occupancy sensor. I believe this puts all passengers in the front seat at risk since the airbag may not operate in an accident. The car is available for inspection. It has not been inspected by the manufacturer or others.
The brakes on the vehicle jerk alot when going under 15, causing everyone in the vehicle to get jerked forward multiple times and are touchy resulting in almost being in an accident. Airbag sensor for front passenger also no longer works and Nissan refuses to repair any defect.
Hello NHTSA: I purchased a 2018 Nissan Leaf from carvana on December 29, 2022. Within a short period of time the car experienced seat belt and air bag warning lights. The car was repaired under factory warranty by hgreg Nissan in cutler bay florida but continued to display warning lights. The satellite communications system was not able to be repaired. This failure deactivated certain convenience and safety features. On March 16, 2023 a warning message and display indicated there was a high voltage battery malfunction and the car needed to be repaired by the dealer, on March 20, 2023 the car was taken to the dealer. The dealer informed me that the car was unsafe to drive and would not, nor did they ever, return the car to me [with the exception of a one-week test drive that did not correct the reported issues]. On August 3, 2023 Nissan north America declared in writing that the car was a lemon under florida law. Nissan refunded the purchase price of the car. Both carvana and Nissan north America have refused to fully compensate me for certain incidental expenses including auto insurance [required to kept active until title transfer] and unused monthly prepaid carvana maintenance costs. These fees were assessed from March 20, 2023 until August of 2023. During a discussion with Nissan north America their agent disclosed that they intended to wholesale this car. My immediate concern is that a lemon-declared car should be disclosed if it is even allowed to be resold.
The airbag warning light has come on. An independent shop and the dealer say the repair is $4500 or more -- greater than the value of the vehicle, because Nissan only sells the complete passenger seat as a repair part, and requires the airbag be paired with the car at the dealer. I ask that this situation be resolved by Nissan making just the seat cushion available as a repair part, as they have for recalls of airbags on other model year cars. The safety problem is that Nissan's refusal to sell a repair part, leads to a fiscal incentive to bypass the airbag. See also NHTSA #: 08v-521.
Vehicle was involved in a head on collision at approximately 25-30 mph and driver's airbag did not deploy.

The passenger occupancy sensor has failed and as a result the passenger airbag is now permanently off, as indicated on the console. The dashboard airbag and general error lights are now constantly flashing as well. The dealer indicated the failure is the mat in the seat, obd code b1018, and there is no repair for this failure. I see there are mutiple complaints online about this same problem on 2011-2012 Leafs, and that NHTSA had opened an investigation. Do I have some recourse here? I am concerned to have people ride in the vehicle with no airbag.
Air bag occupant sensor in front passenger seat failure causing air bag system shut off. Dtc code: b 1018 description: air bag occupant sensor (unit fail). Well documented common failure of this critical safety component on the Nissan Leaf forum. Sensor is not available to replace the defective part and a recall campaign was issued by Nissan, but doesn't cover 2011-2012 models. The vehicle is available for inspection upon request. The system scan revealed the dtc code. Code returns after code clearing. Component has not been inspected by manufacturer. Air bag warning indicator lamp and air bag off x 2 lamp illuminated.
There is a faulty passenger airbag sensor. I see that this has been an issue in the past for older Nissan models. The dealer has inspected it and confirmed the problem. If there is no passenger in the front seat, the supplemental airbag warning light and the front passenger airbag status light stay on. If there is a passenger, the supplemental airbag warning light will turn off, but the front passenger airbag status light stays on.
Passenger airbag sensor is not working. When car is turned on and driving, the dashboard continually displays a red flashing warning light indicating an airbag malfunction. There is also a message that the passenger air bag is off. Newer Nissan Leaf models have had the same problem and have been recalled, but not the 2011 year. It should be recalled. Estimated cost to fix is $3000. Seat bottom was replaced in 2016.
I believe my newly purchased 2012 Nissan Leaf is suffering from the same passenger-side airbag faulty sensor problem that has been documented in NHTSA case 11234415. I am experiencing the same flashing warning lights when I operate the vehicle. There are no signs of damage or tampering with the passenger-side seat. I will do my best to make the vehicle available for inspection upon request. I am worried that the faulty senor, if unfixed, might be shutting off the whole airbag deployment safety system. If it is doing that, Nissan must recall these vehicles for repair! a previous owner took the vehicle to the dealership that originally sold the car and their service center reported that the problem was a known issue. [note: date of incident in this report refers to date of purchase of the vehicle, not the date that the problem began to occur. I do not have that information available to me. ].
Airbag light comes on when it should not. Vehicle disables the passenger airbag because it has code b1018. Airbag should not disable when an adult is sitting in the passenger seat. Code can be reset, but will come back any time someone sits in the passenger seat, regardless of size.
Srs airbag light has been flashing for about a year. Code reader shows b00a0 0009 code indicating a problem with the OCS / occupancy sensor. I believe this puts all passengers in the front seat at risk since the airbag may not operate in an accident. The car is available for inspection. It has not been inspected by the manufacturer or others.
This vehicle failed to have airbags deployed in this accident on 3. 23. 2022, as photographs that are larger than 10mb will upload, but the estimate did upload. But the car was spun nearly if not fully 360 after hit by a truck in a lane change of a blind spot that spun the car and into concrete barriers. Horrible. Totaled vehicle. This is the second accident both under usaa on September 03, 2021, with another police report and freeway accident from front end when freeway traffic came to a sudden stop, and into the barrier. Again no air bag deployed. Warning systems failed.

The contact owns a 2020 Nissan Leaf. The contact stated while driving approximately 50 mph in the rain, a tree branch fell and struck the passenger’s side of the vehicle causing the air bags to deploy. The contact stated that he lost control of the vehicle when the air bags deployed. Additionally, the vehicle lost steering and braking functionality. There was an unknown warning light illuminated during the failure. The vehicle then lost electrical and motive power and rolled to a complete stop. There was no injury sustained. The vehicle was towed to an independent mechanic and was still awaiting the needed repairs. Neither a dealer nor the manufacturer had been contacted or notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 12,000.

The air bag sensor unit failed. The car only has 5271 miles on it and it was stored in a warm garage since 2011. This failure isn't due to use so it must be a manufacturing defect.
9. 3. 2021 freeway comes to a complete stop. Front end collision into vehicle in front at an angle to avoid full collision and into the barrier on passenger side. No airbags deployed! police report filed.
While driving on the highway my vehicle ran over a spare trailer tire that had fallen off another vehicle. my vehicle almost cleared it but the tire just barely lodged underneath in the undercarriage, just past the front tires. even though there was no front collision or sudden reduction in speed; the airbags deployed rendering the vehicle undriveable. this is a flaw and safety issue. while the vehicle did sustain some damage to the undercarriage, there was no need for airbag deployment and doing so exacerbated an already hazardous situation. the airbag startled me, obstructed my view, and could easily have caused me to collide with another vehicle at highway speeds. I believe this is a design flaw and serious safety hazard. I reported it to Nissan USA. I was contacted by Nissan incident investigations and they have disavowed any responsibility for the incident and claim that the systems are working as intended. I am a firefighter and have dealt with many car wrecks. I know when an airbag is supposed to deploy and it is clear to me that the system in the vehicle is not operating as it should and is presenting a safety hazard. further, both the tow truck driver and the attendant at the repair shop expressed confusion as to why the airbag deployed. The airbag replacement alone will cost nearly $3,000 and, since the parts are on backorder, will take nearly a month.

Passenger air bag has shut off. Dealer ran a diagnostic test and said I need a new passenger seat at a cost of $3,182. Current fault code is b1018.
B1018 passenger seat senosr needs replacement Nissan says is not covered under there 10 year 100,000 mile warranty. Will cost $3900. 00 to replace the passenger seat. What is covered under the air bag warranty? this is a major safety issue for me and my family.
Has the recalls been taken care of yet.

What the problem.
December 07, 2016 I bought Nissan Leaf 2016 in June 30, 2016. On November 29, 2016, it just stopped and not going in reverse or forward, just stay on neutral and park. It has two recalls issued by transport canada (# 2016179 an # 2016302). Nissan canada never send my any notification about recalls. On November 29, 2016 it was towed to the dealership, 401/dixie mississauga, on canada. Since then service department is working and after repeated call, they are unable to tell me whats wrong with the vehicle. They do not know how long it will take to fix the problem. I requested a replacement vehicle while they are fixing my vehicle and the request was denied. It look like a manufacturing defect associated with safety issue. Service department is not releasing any information about the problem. It is more than one week now. I hope this information may be helpful for owners and potential buyers. December 7, 2016 8:15 pm.
