1 Power Train problem of the 2021 Nissan Leaf

Failure Date: 03/30/2026

This vehicle is subject to NHTSA recall 25v-655 involving the high-voltage traction battery. The recall restricts the vehicle from using DC fast charging (level 3), which significantly limits the safe and practical operation of the vehicle for its intended use. My household must routinely complete 300+ mile one-way trips on a weekly basis. Without DC fast charging capability, the vehicle cannot reliably complete these trips, creating a risk of being stranded or unable to safely reach destinations. Reliance on level 2 charging requires extended delays of 6+ hours, which makes the vehicle impractical for its intended use and inconsistent with reasonable consumer expectations for normal operation. I contacted Nissan north America consumer affairs and was directed to work with the local dealer. I then contacted dick hannah Nissan in gladstone, or, who redirected me back to consumer affairs. As a result, no party is taking responsibility and no remedy or interim solution has been provided. The manufacturer has issued a safety recall but is unable to provide a repair, timeline, or mitigation. The vehicle’s primary propulsion system is effectively restricted, and the vehicle cannot be used as intended for necessary travel. I have requested a loaner or comparable replacement vehicle while awaiting a remedy, but this has not been provided. This unresolved recall creates an ongoing safety and usability issue, and the manufacturer has failed to provide a reasonable interim solution.

3 Power Train problem of the 2019 Nissan Leaf

Failure Date: 01/09/2026

Manufacturer recall number r24b2 - no remedy available for more than a year! I am the original owner of my 2019 Nissan Leaf sl in California but have been unable to use my car for traveling due to the fast charge port recall. I have performed all the services and the recalls at the local Nissan dealer but there is still no remedy for the fast charge issue. As per the purchase agreement with Nissan, I should be able to use fast chargers without limitation but the lack of ability to use the fast charge port has severely hampered my ability to use the vehicle to travel even within my state. Nissan has promised a fix for more than a year but has failed to deliver.

4 Power Train problem of the 2019 Nissan Leaf

Failure Date: 12/05/2025

There was no incident. . . But I am reporting the fact that Nissan has not provided a remedy and the recall has been in place over a year. I and other owners of affected Nissan Leafs are not able to use the car to its full capacity. I strongly recommend NHTSA encourage/force Nissan to deliver a remedy and, indeed, compensation for the fact that these cars could not be use for long-distance driving for over a year (and counting).

5 Power Train problem of the 2019 Nissan Leaf

Failure Date: 12/05/2025

Nissan Leaf experienced large state of charge fluctuations while driving. State of charge was jumping up and down rapidly. Vehicle was taken in to alpine Nissan in federal height, colorado. Car was diagnosed with a cell imbalance across multiple cells which coincides with recall number r24b2 (nthsa - 24v-700). I have been trying for weeks to get Nissan consumer affairs to give me a solution for the car as its undrivable due to the safety defect. At this point I haven't been able to get anyone on the phone in the last week. The car has a serious loss of power risk and is a fire hazard. The defect is well documented in the recall. The raw battery data and invoice for battery replacement is attached. Case number with Nissan is #[xxx]. I cannot get a written statement from the manufacturer or the dealer that the car is safe to drive in its current state. Information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u. S. C. 552(b)(6).

6 Power Train problem of the 2022 Nissan Leaf

7 Power Train problem of the 2020 Nissan Leaf

Failure Date: 11/05/2025

On November 5, 2025 our 2020 Nissan Leaf (42,701 miles) experienced rapid loss of battery capacity under normal driving/temperatures (80f. ) vehicle defaulted to "turtle mode" temporarily, an unsafe condition. Were able to replicate condition on subsequent days. Took vehicle to cedar park Nissan for evaluation. Technicians concluded that the traction battery had one or more defective cells and recommended battery pack replacement. Vehicle is inoperable. Started complaint with Nissan customer assistance. Dealer and Nissan refused use of a loaner vehicle, despite offering no timeline on repairing/replacing the battery pack. The defect in our vehicle's battery cells may lie in the battery chemistry and be related to issues associated with damage from DC fast charging (recall 24v-700. ) our vehicle has seen little or no fast charging, being charged mostly on level 1 or level 2.

8 Power Train problem of the 2020 Nissan Leaf

Failure Date: 10/27/2025

Vehicle was taken to Nissan to perform "initial remedy" recall p5a22 on 10/24/25 to address recall r24b2. Vehicle was taken from dealer and was driving on 10/27/2025 and experienced a dramatic slow down/turtle mode with "service ev system power reduced" error message.

9 Power Train problem of the 2022 Nissan Leaf

Failure Date: 10/24/2025

The latest recall, NHTSA recall 25v-655 for which there is no fix, has rendered my vehicle useless for any round-trip of more than approximately 130 miles from home. This is the same issue for which there was a recall for 2019/2020 Leafs and after a year there was no known fix from the manufacturer.

10 Power Train problem of the 2022 Nissan Leaf

Failure Date: 10/01/2025

The vehicle is subject to a manufacturer safety recall related to a fire risk involving the high-voltage battery system. After receiving the recall notice, I brought the vehicle to an authorized dealer for evaluation. The dealer confirmed that there is currently no permanent remedy available for this recall and no estimated timeline for when a corrective repair will be available. The vehicle was returned to me without a corrective repair being performed. Since the recall, the vehicle’s charging capability and usable driving range have been significantly reduced compared to normal operation. Fast-charging functionality is no longer reliably available, resulting in longer charging times and a materially decreased effective range. This condition persists and is not attributable to normal battery degradation or driving habits. The vehicle was purchased new in reliance on its advertised driving range and charging capability, which were necessary to meet predictable daily transportation requirements. Due to the post-recall charging limitations and reduced effective range, the vehicle can no longer be relied upon to perform as originally intended. The active safety recall restricts authorized dealers from selling, leasing, or transferring the vehicle until a permanent remedy is available. No remedy or definitive timeline has been provided. Continued operation of a vehicle subject to a fire-related recall without corrective repair, combined with reduced charging capability and range, raises concerns regarding recall adequacy, charging availability, trip completion, and continued safe operation.

11 Power Train problem of the 2022 Nissan Leaf

Failure Date: 10/01/2025

The vehicle has been unable to charge at a lvl3 charger due to safety recall 25v-655 meaning I am no longer able to use this car as a daily commuter for my purpose.

12 Power Train problem of the 2022 Nissan Leaf

Failure Date: 09/30/2025

My 2022 Nissan Leaf (VIN ending 558192) is affected by recall r25c8 (lithium-ion battery expansion / fire risk from quick charging). The recall, announced September 30, 2025, requires a software update to the battery management system. Nissan has advised not to use the chademo DC fast charging port until remedied. No remedy is currently available, and the software update has not been deployed. This defect substantially impairs the vehicle's use, value, and safety for its intended purpose (long-distance travel), restricting it to local driving only. The delay has caused significant loss of use. We previously contacted Nissan on October 7, 2025 (case #55896895) with no resolution. Contacted them again February 18 2026 (case #56332493), with no resolution. This is ongoing as of February 2026.

13 Power Train problem of the 2022 Nissan Leaf

Failure Date: 09/30/2025

The high-voltage battery on my 2022 Nissan Leaf is subject to recall 25v655. The recall notice states that the battery cells can develop excessive lithium deposits, which increases electrical resistance and can cause rapid battery heating during level 3 fast charging. Nissan instructs owners not to use level 3 charging at all until a “remedy” is available. The issue is that the remedy described by Nissan is not an actual repair of the battery defect. Nissan states it will install software that monitors for “state-of-charge fluctuation” and, if detected, will prevent the vehicle from restarting or recharging in order to avoid a thermal incident. This means the defect inside the battery cells is still present, and the car may disable itself if the defect begins to appear. The recall materials also state there is no warning before overheating occurs. This creates multiple safety concerns: • the underlying battery defect remains uncorrected. • the vehicle can become immobilized (unable to restart or recharge) if the software detects the condition. • loss of level 3 charging capability affects the ability to travel safely or plan charging when needed. • a battery fire risk exists during level 3 charging if the defect is not detected in time. Nissan’s documents state that the software is meant only to prevent the “progression” of a thermal incident, not to repair the defective battery. I am concerned that my vehicle contains a known hazardous defect that has not been physically repaired and that the software-only response is inadequate to ensure safety. I am filing this complaint so NHTSA is aware that the remedy being offered does not address the internal battery defect itself and may leave owners exposed to continued safety and reliability risks.

14 Power Train problem of the 2020 Nissan Leaf

Failure Date: 09/25/2025

I am unable to travel long distances in my 2020 Nissan Leaf due to the pending recall, which states that rapid charging may cause a fire in the car due to overheating of the primary lithium battery. Fast charging is the only workable charging method for traveling long distances in the Nissan Leaf. This failure to correct the problem has rendered my Nissan Leaf useless and valueless.

15 Power Train problem of the 2020 Nissan Leaf

Failure Date: 09/24/2025

There is a safety recall for the traction battery that is over a year old. I cannot use the car as intended because fast charging is not available. I am constantly worried about the battery catching fire as I hear more reports of this happening. Nissan has not reached out to me about this recall and there is no indication of when a fix will be available. Nissan is not taking this recall seriously and needs to settle it ASAP! it has now been a year since the recall was announced. I am entering my travel season for work again and cannot use my car.

16 Power Train problem of the 2019 Nissan Leaf

Failure Date: 09/23/2025

I have been waiting for a fix to be available for recall 24v-700 for almost 2 years now. Nissan is also refusing to honor their bulletin posting that they will provide a rental upon customer request.

17 Power Train problem of the 2020 Nissan Leaf

Failure Date: 07/15/2025

Nissan issued recall r24b2 on my Leaf 9 months ago. The recall warns my car could catch on fire when fast charging, but offers no remedy other than "don't fast charge it". Nissan keeps announcing remedy dates and missing them (October 2024, March 2025, now q3 2025). I cannot drive my vehicle on a tri longer than one charge without the fast charge capability I was sold and bought - and I am very concerned about the fire danger - there have been multiple incidents of Leaf's catching fire because of this recall. Nissan dealer and consumer affairs will offer no remedy, no buyback and no work-around. Is there any way NHTSA can help here?.

18 Power Train problem of the 2022 Nissan Leaf

Failure Date: 03/07/2025

In reduced traction environments vehicle will accelerate a full throttle without driver input to accelerator pedal. The issue is repeatable. Though it seems to happen under multiple conditions. Vehicles acceleration is often opposite of the direction selected on shifter. [xxx] information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u. S. C. 552(b)(6).

19 Power Train problem of the 2020 Nissan Leaf

Failure Date: 02/12/2025

While attempting to drive on icy pavement and “rocking” the vehicle forward and back, the motor accelerates uncontrolled without pressing the accelerator and would not stop when the brake pedal was pressed and released. It would only stop when the brake pedal was held depressed. I do not have a photo, but I do have a video which cannot be uploaded since it’s not a photo file. I would be happy to provide if requested.

20 Power Train problem of the 2018 Nissan Leaf

Failure Date: 02/01/2025

Vehicle randomly shuts down when car is underload traveling at highway speed up an incline and with the climate on. Diagnostics are showing multiple cells that are bad in the main battery manufacturer is stating that it is normal wear and it is normal. I’ve only had the car for 300 miles. It was a previously owned car that was supposed to carry an eight year warranty on the drivetrain and battery. They are not honoring the warranty and the vehicle is dangerous to drive and in fact cannot be driven the situation occurred on three occasions where the vehicle just randomly shuts down on the freeway in the middle of the highway. This is a serious concern that will definitely cause injury or death. I attached photos of two occasions when the battery discharged almost immediately, and the one photo shows on the vehicle was completely disabled. I have more supportive photographs and computer printouts from diagnostics if requested. .

21 Power Train problem of the 2016 Nissan Leaf

Failure Date: 01/09/2025

On January 9, a little after 12:30 pm, on indian head highway (MD route 210) northbound near the manokeek exit, after limiting drive power owing to battery degradation and cold weather (about 30 f) drive power and power steering failed entirely. There was no warning to pull over so I suspect this is an undocumented failure mode. After the car was towed home, it would not charge when plugged in until after I disconnected the 12 v battery and reconnected it after about ten minutes. It would then charge and after a few minutes I checked and it would send power to the wheels and power steering again. The state of charge of the lithium ion battery was about 86% throughout. This was not a failure of the on board 12 v battery charging system or 12 v battery which the tow truck driver tested as good, it is quite new. After the reset of disconnecting the 12 v battery and reconnecting, the terminals show higher voltage when the car is on than when it is off. Attached please find a picture of the warning lights after the car failed. Note that the battery light is for the 12 volt battery but there is nothing wrong with it. Also atteched, voltmeter readings when the car is off and on showing that the 12 volt battery recharging system is working. This car may or may not have an optional battery warmer, but its range of operation is well below the 30 f temperature when the failure occured. The car is more that two years overdue for warranty lithium ion battery replacement owing to manufacture delay.

22 Power Train problem of the 2023 Nissan Leaf

Failure Date: 12/14/2024

Accident:date: [xxx] time: [xxx] location: balboa park – san diego – morley field sports center – parking lot parking lot - google maps driver – geico insurance coverage || no passengers what: Nissan Leaf 2023 model sv+ - 8410 miles -- unintended acceleration incident backing up to leave parking lot – with seat belt on – looked at rear view camera – clear. Backed up slowly – then intersected with the rear bumper of a Honda – slowly I braked – then went into drive mode to get out of the intersection. Then I lost control of the car. Car went lurching forward fast – zoomed up over parking curb – 5 in – side-swiped the side of a tree with right front bumper – gashed with parts flying all over the grass. Crashing noises from jumping the curb and hitting the tree. I braked hard and got vehicle to stop = approx. 3 feet from another tree – which I would have hit straight on. No airbags were deployed. It all happened at high acceleration in an instant. After I recovered from the shock, I assessed the situation. The dashboard showed a malfunction – right front tire – no air pressure. Contacted my insurance company – geico – and opened a claim. Geico arranged for my vehicle to be towed by ASAP towing to my home. Took photos of the wreckage – collected all the pieces I could in a bucket – some were too large to fit into my car = air dam or some sort of under side cover – made of gray bendable plastic. Called ASAP - the towing company – asked about a flat bed as my front right tire was flat and the front bumper of the car had fallen off. My Leaf needs to be repaired. It needs to be reprogrammed by Nissan so that I feel safe driving it. Of note, I had to my Nissan dealer – mossy Nissan poway – for the recall r23a6 on sept. 26, 2023. Did they address the recall issue? information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u. S. C. 552(b)(6).

23 Power Train problem of the 2018 Nissan Leaf

Failure Date: 12/10/2024

I was traveling home from work at approximately 60mph (speed limit) and I experienced a rapid drop in the state of charge from ~60% to ~25% in 15-20 seconds. I slowed the vehicle to 55mph and it recovered most of the state of charge. When accelerating to 60mph a few miles later I experience the same behavior and was forced to maintain 55mph. I was forced to turn off the electric cabin heater, heated seats, and heated steering wheel as well. I have been able to recreate the issue if the battery cold (outside temperature less than 15f and the vehicle has been outside for 8+ hours), less than 60% charged, and put under high load (going up a steep grade/60mph+) the vehicle will register a battery discharge rate of ~5%/second and continue until the vehicle puts itself into turtle mode, the load is reduced, or I assume, shut off. Battery discharge is "phantom" where the vehicle, when under less load (I. E. Slower/slowing), will return to a higher charge, and when no load (I. E. Stopped), will return to close to the original charge. Depending on how long the high load is maintained it can drastically reduce the real state of charge on the battery. The Nissan dealership identified it as at least one bad battery module, but no fault codes were registered by the vehicle outside of experiencing turtle mode. This issue forces the driver to slow down to reduce load on the vehicle and abrupt speed changes may be required to keep the vehicle operational. This can put the driver into a dangerous situation of being forced to slow down regardless of road conditions or other driver behaviors. If all of the conditions for the battery listed in the first sentence are met, the vehicle will register a rapid battery state of charge decline, it may indicate turtle mode is active (helps reduce battery load), and it will indicate low charge around 10% state of charge. I have personally experienced all of this as the driver, and any assumptions I have made I have identified.

24 Power Train problem of the 2019 Nissan Leaf

Failure Date: 11/11/2024

Clunking noise occurs during acceleration - this sound occurs from a stationary situation and when the car moves forward. This clunk can be jarring and sudden, and may escalate later into damage to the front axel.

25 Power Train problem of the 2019 Nissan Leaf

Failure Date: 11/01/2024

Under battery recall, unable to charge with public chargers (incompatible standards and fire risk) and at home. Being legally represented by mfs legal and filed case with Nissan consumer affairs case [xxx]. No software update or fix in sight. Talked with consumer affairs as well as future Nissan in folsom and roseville with no solutions! information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u. S. C. 552(b)(6).

26 Power Train problem of the 2020 Nissan Leaf

Failure Date: 10/01/2024

Vehicle: 2020 Nissan Leaf issue: level 3 DC fast charging (chademo) disabled due to known defect odometer: ~68,000 miles description: my 2020 Nissan Leaf is affected by a known defect that disables level 3 DC fast charging (chademo). Nissan initially acknowledged the issue and planned a fix for November 2024, but that fix has now been delayed until q3 2025. This delay means I will be without fast charging capability for nearly a full year, despite this being a key advertised feature of the vehicle. Fast charging is essential for longer trips, rural travel, and emergency use — its absence significantly reduces the car’s practicality and range flexibility. Nissan has not offered any interim solution or compensation. The prolonged delay creates a risk of ev drivers being stranded or unable to reliably plan travel, especially in areas with limited level 2 infrastructure. Requested action: I request that NHTSA monitor or investigate this issue, including the timeline and handling of the recall or repair. Dc fast charging is a critical safety and usability feature for evs, and prolonged manufacturer delays in addressing defects like this should not be acceptable. Sincerely, [xxx] information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u. S. C. 552(b)(6).

27 Power Train problem of the 2020 Nissan Leaf

Failure Date: 09/23/2024

It has been a year with no ability to quick charge my car. This is ridiculous, they need to put in a new battery and be done with this. It renders the car useless for many trips! why aren't you doing anything about this?.

28 Power Train problem of the 2019 Nissan Leaf

Failure Date: 09/22/2024

R24b2 battery recall has been going on for a full year now with remedies being moved every time the date has been reached. Nissan refuses a buyback, but still has no solution to the no fast charging mandate. The car would not have been purchased if I had known there is essentially no level 3 charging on this car.

29 Power Train problem of the 2019 Nissan Leaf

Failure Date: 09/20/2024

Manufacturer name : Nissan north America, inc. Submission date : Sep 19, 2024 NHTSA recall no. : 24v-700 manufacturer recall no. : r24b2 my vehicle: 2019 Nissan Leaf description of the safety risk: while the vehicle is level 3 quick charging, the increased electrical resistance could result in rapid heating of the battery. If quick charging continues, a battery fire may occur increasing the risk of injury. This recall has been open since sept 2024. The promised remedy date (Nov 2024) has passed. My VIN look-up still shows no remedy available which means I am unable to use level 3.

30 Power Train problem of the 2019 Nissan Leaf

Failure Date: 09/19/2024

The Nissan safety recall 24v-700 has been languishing for 18 months, and Nissan has not repaired our vehicle. We are unable to drive it safely for distance travel because we are unable to use rapid DC chargers due to risk of fire. We are extremely frustrated with Nissan’s failure to act and address this issue in a timely fashion. It is completely unacceptable to not be able to use a car for its intended use for 18 months because of a safety issue.

31 Power Train problem of the 2022 Nissan Leaf

Failure Date: 07/22/2024

When the power switch is depressed the vehicle takes a certain amount of time before the ready to drive light is illuminated and the vehicle can be shifted into drive out reverse mode. However, if the gear shifter is moved into either drive or reverse prior to the light illuminating the vehicle will enter neutral mode instead of remaining in park. If the vehicle is stopped on any incline the vehicle may begin to roll in an unexpected direction once the brake is released believing the vehicle has shifted into the correct mode. If another vehicle, pedestrian, or object is near the vehicle it may be impacted before the driver has the time to depress the brake pedal. Further making this issue unsafe is that normally the gear selector has to be held in the neutral position for 2 seconds before the vehicle shifts into neutral. With this issue, the vehicle immediately goes into neutral when the shift selector is placed in drive or reverse. The issue was presented to a Nissan dealership for which they responded the vehicle is operating normally. Contacting Nissan consumer affairs also resulted in the statement that the vehicle is functioning normally. The issue with the "normal" operation being an unsafe operation was not of interest to either the dealership or consumer affair department, though the consumer affairs rep said they may look into it. For comparison, the same procedure was performed on a 2012 Toyota prius in which it remains in park, as would be the expected result if the vehicle was not ready to shift into gear.

32 Power Train problem of the 2019 Nissan Leaf

Failure Date: 06/05/2024

Cant fast charge the vehicle, remedy has not been issued yet. Remedy keeps getting pushed back. Latest remedy went from March 2025-October 2025.

33 Power Train problem of the 2021 Nissan Leaf

Failure Date: 03/09/2024

This is a report of what I think is a safety issue with the Leaf vehicle but has not caused an accident or incident for me, yet. If the start button is pressed and then the shift control is changed to quickly the car will be put into neutral instead of the desired drive or reverse. If the driver does not realize this and removes their foot from the break when the car is on a steep hill the car could roll into a vehicle, pedestrian or other obstacle before the surprised driver has a chance to break. The Leaf vehicle should not go out of park if it is not ready to go into drive or reverse when the driver is trying to shift it into drive or reverse.

34 Power Train problem of the 2020 Nissan Leaf

Failure Date: 03/01/2024

Nissan, the manufacturer, has failed to remedy a safety recall, 24v-700, for my vehicle in a timely manner. A September 19, 2024 submission report states that recall number r24b2 will be remedied by November 2024. Now the Nissan website "Nissan is currently developing a remedy plan that is expected to be available by March 2025". It is now August 2025 and no remedy has been established. This is a safety concern and a fire hazard and must be promptly addressed.

35 Power Train problem of the 2018 Nissan Leaf

Failure Date: 02/23/2024

Our 2018 Nissan Leaf experienced an error message when we tried to start it saying "warning service ev system no power". Mileage: 29,862. It would go into neutral, but not into drive. We called geico to have it towed to dealership leith Nissan on Feb. 22, 2024. On Feb. 23, john day from leith Nissan called to request permission to install a new 12v battery. I approved the cost of replacing the battery. They said that they were able to drive the car after the 12v battery was replaced. But then they plugged it into the charger, and got an error messsage "ev system no power", and they couldn't drive it anymore. Sometime after that there was a thermal event that caused the power distribution module to explode and for soot to pour out of it. These incidents are described by the technician ryan in these videos https://video. 37483. Net/timeline/dfgvdsa4fbpbulwi?_ga=2. 209879445. 1227979873. 1710240735-1395739945. 1710240735 Nissan indicated that the electric power train is no longer under warranty. Our q:when did you receive the car? (2/23 repair order opened 206361) when did you first start working on the car? (2/23) when did the thermal event occur? (unsure of occurrence date) when did you replace the 12 volt battery? (2/24) when were you told to replace the high voltage battery? (3/12) when did you replace the high voltage battery? (3/15) is the replacement high voltage battery a new battery or a used battery? (new battery) has the replacement high voltage battery been maintained at a charge or is it at 0% charge? and what charge is it at now? (soc unknown at this time) when were you told the pdm needed to be replaced? (3/15 after hv battery was installed and further diag was performed) when did you replace the pdm? (not yet completed -- were in process but stopped due to bus bar bolt discovery) vehicle was left unattended with no hv warnings with service plug removed but inside vehicle with no cover over port to hv battery.
