1 Seats problem of the 2011 Nissan Leaf

Failure Date: 04/17/2025

Car throws a b1018 dtc, which is for the passenger seat occupancy sensor. The seat occupancy sensor failing poses a major safety risk, as it causes the airbags to not deploy properly in the event of a crash. This is a very well known issue for the 2011-2012 Leaf, and the only option Nissan gives to fix this is a full seat replacement, which is cost prohibitive at over $3000. Previously, a recall was issued for 2013-2016 Leafs for a similar issue, but the 2011-2012 was not included in that recall.

2 Seats problem of the 2011 Nissan Leaf

Failure Date: 06/25/2024

Please see thread: [xxx] my 2011 Nissan Leaf's OCS has failed randomly. I pulled the code via an bluetooth obd reader and the Leafspy pro app installed on my phone: b1018-00 09 air bag occupant sens [unit fail] src-41. I took the car to a local dealership and was quoted over $4k for a full seat replacement with no eta as the part is on back order. There is no option to simply replace the OCS alone and there is no workaround from Nissan to re-enable the passenger airbag without paying the $4k for the new seat. Opened a case with Nissan consumer affairs who advised they could do nothing for me. The repair is more expensive than the value of the vehicle. Because Nissan offers no workaround other than paying $4k for a new seat, consumers are incentivized to bypass the airbag sensor using a 3rd-party box (see here [xxx] rather than properly repair it. This is a safety issue and Nissan should do the right thing in making the repair affordable or making an official way to bypass the sensor/enable the airbags. Information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u. S. C. 552(b)(6).

3 Seats problem of the 2011 Nissan Leaf

Failure Date: 09/24/2023

Supplemental air bag warning light started blinking on 9/24/2023. It blinks regardless of whether the front passenger seat is occupied. The OCS sensor for the passenger seat failed. This should have been covered by a recall. The dealer wants over $3,000. 00 to replace the seat cushion. I declined the repair. Dealer assured me that driver air bag isn't affected, so I'll operate the car without a front passenger. Dealer estimate: denied repair step step total: $3,687. 14 correction: inspected system, dtc b1018 for occupant sensor unit failure is present. Cleared dtc, when sitting in passenger seat, dtc came back on. Inspected continuity to passenger seat occupant sensor and found ok at this time. Diagnosis says replacement of passenger occupant sensor assembly (lower seat assembly) labor: $588. 00.

4 Seats problem of the 2011 Nissan Leaf

Failure Date: 08/23/2022

Air bag occupant sensor in front passenger seat failure causing air bag system shut off. Dtc code: b 1018 description: air bag occupant sensor (unit fail). Well documented common failure of this critical safety component on the Nissan Leaf forum. Sensor is not available to replace the defective part and a recall campaign was issued by Nissan, but doesn't cover 2011-2012 models. The vehicle is available for inspection upon request. The system scan revealed the dtc code. Code returns after code clearing. Component has not been inspected by manufacturer. Air bag warning indicator lamp and air bag off x 2 lamp illuminated.

5 Seats problem of the 2012 Nissan Leaf

Failure Date: 07/10/2022

I believe my newly purchased 2012 Nissan Leaf is suffering from the same passenger-side airbag faulty sensor problem that has been documented in NHTSA case 11234415. I am experiencing the same flashing warning lights when I operate the vehicle. There are no signs of damage or tampering with the passenger-side seat. I will do my best to make the vehicle available for inspection upon request. I am worried that the faulty senor, if unfixed, might be shutting off the whole airbag deployment safety system. If it is doing that, Nissan must recall these vehicles for repair! a previous owner took the vehicle to the dealership that originally sold the car and their service center reported that the problem was a known issue. [note: date of incident in this report refers to date of purchase of the vehicle, not the date that the problem began to occur. I do not have that information available to me. ].

6 Seats problem of the 2011 Nissan Leaf

Failure Date: 10/20/2021

The air bag sensor unit failed. The car only has 5271 miles on it and it was stored in a warm garage since 2011. This failure isn't due to use so it must be a manufacturing defect.

7 Seats problem of the 2013 Nissan Leaf

Failure Date: 08/18/2016

I had an adult passenger sitting on the front passenger seat with her 8lb dog. She weighs 83 lbs. The airbag light showed that the airbag was shut off. Another time I place a grocery bag with two bags of frozen potatoes and a quart of ice cream on the seat, the "no airbag light" shut off. When I removed the bag the the airbag off light whent on.

8 Seats problem of the 2011 Nissan Leaf

Failure Date: 10/10/2015

Passenger seat airbag on/off switch sensor needs replacement according to Nissan dealer. Passenger airbag "off" light is flashing even with 125 pound passenger in seat. Nissan couldn't tell me whether or not passenger airbag was really on or off. Quoted $2400 to replace the passenger seat airbag switch and seat assembly because is no longer under warranty according to Nissan. This appears to be exactly the problem covered by 2013 Leaf recall for hardware manufacturing problem in same sensor.

9 Seats problem of the 2014 Nissan Leaf

Failure Date: 06/05/2014

There is an air bag light that illuminates when there is weight on the passenger seat but the air bag will not be deployed, maybe because the vehicle thinks there is a dog, small child, or inanimate object sitting in the seat. The trouble is that the "air bag disabled light" occasionally turns on when my teenage sons sit in the passenger seat. The dealer says it is because my sons do not always sit squarely to the back of the seat; that is, they occasionally slouch in the seat. I have videos of this behavior which I can send to you, so you can determine it is is something you would like to look into. Nissan's response is akin to steve jobs saying of the iphone 4, "you're holding it wrong. " I think Nissan should build their sensors for the way people sometimes sit in their seats, not as the way they would like them to sit under idea circumstances. They probably have one sensor at the back of the seat, when they actually need another in the middle and maybe one at the front to better judge the weight of the object in the seat.

10 Seats problem of the 2013 Nissan Leaf

Failure Date: 07/02/2013

Passenger airbag shows off when passenger in the seat is a typical adult, ~130 pounds. The underseat sensor (ods occupant detection system) is not calibrated - needs about 160 pounds to sense a person in the seat. Nissan had a recall (March 2013) for this exact problem. They claim that this vehicle was not included. It is a safety issue. Nissan hotline (alex allen) says take it to the dealer. The dealer says call Nissan. This car needs to be a part of the recall.
