1 Wiper problem of the 2018 Nissan Leaf

Failure Date: 11/27/2025

The front windshield wipers on this car fail in light ice or snow. They've broken every winter I've owned this car (four years). This results in me driving around without front windshield wipers until I can get it fixed, watching the weather forecast and hoping I don't get caught in rain or snow. It happens despite my best efforts not to use the wipers in freezing weather unless absolutely necessary, going so far as to drive in light snow or rain without wipers to avoid breaking them. I've fixed it myself (not easy, especially in winter weather) and paid a mechanic to fix it for me at least three times. Most recently, the mechanic replaced the entire motor and linkage assembly which was extra expensive, but the right wiper broke again this thanksgiving. (until this last time, both wipers have always broken together. ).

2 Wiper problem of the 2021 Nissan Leaf

Failure Date: 10/15/2025

After the dealership has checked the rear view camera after manufacturer recall r23d7, the camera image is sometimes not displayed. Sometimes it helps to open and close the rear tailgate to reactivate the display of the rear view camera. The issue also seems to be dependent on ambient temperature. The manufacturer has failed or is unable to remedy this safety recall permanently. Before the recall was checked by the dealership, the vehicle never had an issue with the rear view mirror image not being displayed. When asking the dealership to fix it they told me that I need to pay for the repair of the wiring harness and it is not covered anymore by the recall.

3 Wiper problem of the 2021 Nissan Leaf

Failure Date: 10/03/2025

Vehicle battery drains significantly after being charged, passenger wiper will not work impairing visibility, back up camera blurs and fails, bright lights would not turn on, I was in a huge rain storm unable to see. Inability to use level 3 charger is disallowing me to be able to use vehicle due to amount of time to charge and battery drain has caused me to be broken down requiring a tow twice due to inaccurate mileage readings, leaving me stranded at night without access to phone service, placing me in an unsafe area/situation.

4 Wiper problem of the 2022 Nissan Leaf

Failure Date: 02/18/2025

I was just at empire lakewood Nissan dealership in colorado on [xxx] for a few things. During my visit recall p4a17 was performed. I now notice on my drive in to work my heater isn't working now. It just blows cold air through the defroster and not at my feet as the hvac indicator shows. I always have my auto climate feature set to 68 degrees f. It didn't finally come on until I'm almost to work. One of the best things about an electric car is I don't have to wait for the engine/coolant to warm up. My car was always warm by the time I left my neighborhood. Now I'm pulling into work and it's finally warm? what did p4a17 do to my car? information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u. S. C. 552(b)(6).

5 Wiper problem of the 2020 Nissan Leaf

Failure Date: 01/20/2025

The defrost in my Nissan Leaf with does not function at all when the temperature is below around 10 degrees fahrenheit. I found this out by having my windshield rapidly frost over while driving down the highway at over 65 mph, almost causing a multi-vehicle accident because I could not see out of any of my windows. When I departed for my trip the vehicle had defrost functionality, but the ambient temperature must have dropped during my trip to the point where I can only assume the heat pump became disabled by the vehicle control systems, leaving only the positive temperature coefficient (ptc) heater to supply defrost functionality. I assume that my ptc heater is somehow inoperative and thus resulted in the rapid frosting without any warning or indication to the driver. I see this as a critical safety concern as it affects vehicle visibility and defrost performance to where the vehicle no longer meets fmvss standard 103. Driving in ambient temperatures around the point at which the heat pump becomes disabled can cause rapid frosting of the vehicle windows with zero warning or indication of the defrost functionality being compromised. Since it only happens in extreme cold, I assume the issue is related to the positive temperature coefficient (ptc) heater that is supposed to kick in when the vehicles heat pump becomes ineffective below a specific ambient temperature. I tried the process outlined in nthsa recall 22v-048, but it still does not supply any defrost functionality. Conducting a quick internet search has resulted in numerous other Leaf owners experiencing similar issues with their loss of defrost functionality and vehicle heat in extreme cold ambient temperatures. The vehicle has not yet been inspected by a dealer or the manufacturer. I was lucky and did not get into an accident, but other owners of this vehicle may not be so lucky. I feel that Nissan is hiding a known defect here since there was already a recall related to defrost performance.

6 Wiper problem of the 2019 Nissan Leaf

Failure Date: 01/19/2025

While driving during rainy conditions on January 19, the windshield wipers stopped working, resulting in obstructed view through front windshield while driving in the rain. Following, they worked intermittently for a week and then stopped working altogether. The exact failure has not been identified but is either a damage rod or non-functional motor; likely the motor as there is no noise coming from motor when the wipers are turned on. No warnings. We do not have a dealer within driving distance.

7 Wiper problem of the 2022 Nissan Leaf

Failure Date: 12/15/2024

Heater will start to intermittently blow cold air when air temperatures are below ~18f. This started happening after I took vehicle in to fix recall p4a17 in December 2024. I had no issues prior to this recall "fix". In addition to being uncomfortable with cold air being blown on me at cold temperatures, this leads to the front and side windshields to start to fog up, impairing visibility. I have not taken it into a dealer to be examined as there are numerous reports already on-line that this is a known issue after the p4a17 "fix" and yet Nissan has not yet released an actual fix for the current problem of blowing cold air with cold temperatures. There are no warning lamps or messages.

8 Wiper problem of the 2021 Nissan Leaf

Failure Date: 12/15/2024

The rear view camera picture on the display is grey and does not display any video signal at temperatures below about 32 degrees fahrenheit. Backing up without the rear view camera picture causes a safety hazard.

9 Wiper problem of the 2021 Nissan Leaf

Failure Date: 11/09/2024

The dealership without our knowledge or approval did an update on our car last November that makes the heater and more importantly defroster not work when it's colder than about 17f degrees outside. This causes the vehicle to fog up all over including the windshield making it dangerous to drive. After about 10 minutes it finally starts working. We've told them about it numerous times and even saw other Leafs at the dealership for the exact same thing on the first cold day last winter after the update. They haven't yet gotten a fix for it and said it's on purpose. As far as us owners can tell they aren't looking into any sort of fix. They say we should just start the car for 10 minutes without driving but that doesn't work. You can leave it run for 30 minutes and the heat doesn't turn on. It only works after 10 minutes of dangerous driving. Besides we shouldn't have to run a vehicle for 10 minutes before driving. There are numerous examples of emergencies that require immediate driving. Please look into this as every Leaf owner is dealing with the same dangerous conditions in the northern states and I assume canada.

10 Wiper problem of the 2023 Nissan Leaf

Failure Date: 07/26/2023

The windshield of my Nissan Leaf spontaneously cracked without being hit by anything externally. Upon inspection, it's pretty clear that the windshield didn't crack because of anything hitting it from the outside (which is what the dealer claimed), since the outside of the windshield is still completely smooth. The crack somehow started from the bottom of the inside of the windshield and propagated itself across the entire windshield. When the car was purchased, my dealer recommended warranty purchase because of the fragile windshield, which suggested that the windshield design may be faulty.

11 Wiper problem of the 2019 Nissan Leaf

Failure Date: 05/02/2023

The rearview camera stopped working. It works intermittently when backing up (<10%), but otherwise just shows a black screen for the rear backup camera. No warning lamps. As a result the rear blind spot warning does not work, posing a risk to kids or pedestrians crossing behind me. The vehicle has not been inspected by anyone at this point but a service appointment is scheduled. It is available for inspection.

12 Wiper problem of the 2023 Nissan Leaf

Failure Date: 04/05/2023

I am in possession of NHTSA recall 22v-048 for my Nissan Leaf, received on 04/05/2023. This recall remedy is in my opinion clearly deficient. Although a owner's manual supplement is included, the supplement does not: (1) replace the current, defective owner's manual (2) provide any way to mark the current manual to indicate that there's a problem and to refer to the supplement or (3) even identify what page the problematic instructions are on. Even if someone follows the recall notice to the letter (which is to place the supplement with the owner's manual), someone looking up the instructions in the owner's manual for defrosting will not know to refer to the supplement instead of the original manual. This recall needs to be re-done, either by sending an entirely new manual (instructing owners to discard the old one) or at the very least to identify the affected page and provide a sticker to cover up the incorrect information and tell people to refer to the supplement instead.

13 Wiper problem of the 2019 Nissan Leaf

Failure Date: 04/03/2023

Today I received a recall notice - 22v0-048 - regarding the defrosting and defogging systems. As currently programmed, the defroster limits visibility out of the windshield under cold conditions. The solution proposed by Nissan is reminiscent of the apollo 13 instructions, complicated and difficult to follow by normal humans. Rather than actually reprogram the defrosting system, Nissan is resolving the recall by issuing inane instructions. This should not be allowed.

14 Wiper problem of the 2021 Nissan Leaf

Failure Date: 04/03/2023

The resolution for recall 22v-048 provided by Nissan is unacceptable. In order how to properly run the defroster for conditions you have refer to manual or supplement manual. I would expect just turn on defrost and not worry if it going to work in the weather condition I am driving in.

15 Wiper problem of the 2017 Nissan Leaf

Failure Date: 04/03/2023

My vehicle (VIN 1n4bz0cp1hc302064) remains listed as subject to a recall on the NHTSA website even though the remedy/repair was executed on April 3, 2023 by an authorized dealer/service center: Nissan of downtown la.

16 Wiper problem of the 2019 Nissan Leaf

Failure Date: 02/22/2023

The back up camera does not work half of the time. When the car is put in reverse, the screen in the console shows only black. Because the car has many blind spots and a small back window, this makes backing up difficult. The other day I almost ran over my neighbors kid and I was being extra cautious. Every time we've taken the car to the dealership for repair the camera start working again. Other Nissan Leafs from this same year were recalled for a similar issue, but ours was not. Nissan needs to expand the recall to more vehicles. We have picture evidence that the camera does not work, but because the dealership can't replicate the issue they will not cover the cost of repair even though this problem is identical to issues from a previous recall.

17 Wiper problem of the 2019 Nissan Leaf

Failure Date: 08/01/2022

Backup camera fails to display when in reverse. Dangerous reduced visibility of surroundings while reversing vehicle. Called dealership and they confirmed that my VIN is not on the recall list, but I am having the issue! they said I would be charged service to repair this federal safety requirement. Blank screen when entering reverse mode.

18 Wiper problem of the 2021 Nissan Leaf

Failure Date: 06/01/2022

When placing the vehicle in reverse, the display screen shows either a distorted view or no view at all, or a solid pink color across the screen. This result in zero visibility out the rear of the vehicle.

19 Wiper problem of the 2020 Nissan Leaf

Failure Date: 01/01/2022

Nissan claims that a previous recall for federal motor vehicle safety standard (fmvss) number 111, rear visibility could be fixed with a system update (recall 20v412000). This does not appear to be the case. I had the system update run already in December 2022 and it didn't fix the problem. The rear backup camera still goes pink and is not visible. I believe this is a hardware issue and should be fixed because it is a major safety problem.

20 Wiper problem of the 2020 Nissan Leaf

Failure Date: 12/29/2021

Defroster is not working at all. Spoke to dealer, needs new part and Nissan corporate. Nothing moving. Live in denver, having a working defroster is extremely important.

21 Wiper problem of the 2019 Nissan Leaf

Failure Date: 12/15/2021

I read "due to a software issue in these Leaf hatchbacks, the back-up camera display can suddenly disappear when the car is in reverse and be replaced with the previous image. " mine has same problem but doesn't have recall yet. Thank you.

22 Wiper problem of the 2019 Nissan Leaf

Failure Date: 05/02/2021

The rear hatchback window shattered when the hatch was closed with normal force and without any objects obstructing closure or touching the window. The vehicle was stationary in a driveway at the time.

23 Wiper problem of the 2019 Nissan Leaf

Failure Date: 11/16/2020

When using android auto in the infotainment, one cannot see the climate (hvac) status, so it creates a dangerous distraction to adjust the heating/air conditioning, fan speed, defrost, etc. When in normal menus and an adjustment is made to the climate settings, it is displayed on the top of the screen in a banner. This is the only place where this information is visible, and generally works fine. However, when using android auto, this banner does not activate and is not visible. As a result, changing the climate settings involves multiple touchscreen interactions in addition to using the physical controls. This could and should be updated via a software update. I will also make a youtube video showing the problem for further illustration.

24 Wiper problem of the 2019 Nissan Leaf

25 Wiper problem of the 2019 Nissan Leaf

Failure Date: 11/01/2019

When the windshield is foggy, and you are in traffic, it will not properly defrost causing a serious visibility problem.

26 Wiper problem of the 2019 Nissan Leaf

Failure Date: 06/05/2019

When the vehicle is in stop and go or heavy traffic, the air conditioning system throttles itself back to conserve power in the traction battery. Combined with the fact there are no rear seat vents (either in the console or the floor), it gets dangerously hot in the vehicle, especially in the back of the vehicle. According to Nissan, USA, this is the design of the vehicle. Temperatures of over 100 degrees have been recorded in my daughter's car seat while in traffic with the air conditioning hardly running or running at a very low power. According to Nissan, this is the only way they can meet their advertised epa range. Another area this problem effects is that when the windshield is foggy, and you are in traffic, it will not properly defrost causing a serious visibility problem. I have multiple videos of all of this. I contacted Nissan but they claim that the car is operating as designed. I am contacting the bbb lemon law section. My local representative has asked me to file a NHTSA complaint as they feel this is a serious safety issue.

27 Wiper problem of the 2019 Nissan Leaf

Failure Date: 03/01/2019

After a very light snow, wipers stopped working. Dealer said wiper arm was stressed and bent making wipers inoperable. Claimed it was not a warranty repair.

28 Wiper problem of the 2018 Nissan Leaf

Failure Date: 12/21/2018

The vehicle's blind spot detector turns off at low speeds potentially putting the driver at risk if the driver depends on the blind spot detector. The collision avoidance system is unreliable. When the car in front switches lanes and there is a stopped car in front the vehicle starts to slow down but releases the breaks about 50 ft from the stopped car and starts warning of impending collision. And the breaks are not applied.

30 Wiper problem of the 2017 Nissan Leaf

Failure Date: 03/28/2018

When turning left the visibility is very poor for a 5' 1" driver. The double "a" pillar and large side view mirror block the driver's visibility and caused an accident. Several other people also complained about the visibility almost causing accidents on a Leaf blog website. The accident happened when turning left at a busy intersection and an old lady fell because the Leaf driver did not see the pedestrian soon enough due to poor visibility on a clear day around noon. The Leaf had stopped waiting for 3 vehicles to pass before making the left turn at a slow speed but the large double "a" pillar and large side mirror blocked the driver's view.

Failure Date: 10/03/2017

The passenger side wiper just suddenly stopped working at 40,000 miles, the driver side works fine.

32 Wiper problem of the 2015 Nissan Leaf

Failure Date: 08/09/2016

In night time the width of beam is not wide enough(high or low beam). When making turn, I can not see anything in perpendicular direction. I am always afraid that, I might drive over someone. No accidents have happened yet. I am very concerned that this can cause harm to someone or lead to an accident as I might hit a parked car at the corner.

33 Wiper problem of the 2012 Nissan Leaf

Failure Date: 05/15/2016

Nhtsa must pass regulations requiring vehicle manufacturers to drastically improve a-pillar obscuration angle! this is a serious safety defect of many modern vehicles that must have been a factor in many accidents, the extent to which is probably unquantified & largely unknown due to the fact that most people do not even know about the problem. The only remedy is for the driver to move his head from side to side every time the vehicle starts from a stopped position to ascertain that there are no people or vehicles hiding in or transiting the a-pilar blockage. This is a well known problem in the industry, as proven by the paper published by pipkorn bengt of autoliv research (sweden) entitled safety & vision improvements by expandable a-pillars (undated), which is in the NHTSA database/website, where a 25% improvement in a-pillar obscuration angle is demonstrated by the use of experimental expandable a-pillars. The number of people already injured or killed by this common modern car defect will probably never be known, with the unfortunate drivers being disbelieved when they say they never saw anyone/thing due to the obscure nature & knowledge of this serious problem. In my last experience with it, the worst case scenario occurred (except for the fact that injury/death was avoided). I was moving at about 10mph in a parking lot & an older woman was walking at about 1mph toward my car from the left at just the right distance/speed. My wife in the driver's seat, having a better left view, started yelling at me 'stop - are you going to run over that lady'. I said 'what lady?' realizing in a couple seconds that it she must be behind my window pillar, I moved my head about 6 inches to the right, & there she was! she just appeared out of thin air! I never saw even a tiny bit of her before. She was looking at me with disbelief on her face. What if it were a child?.

34 Wiper problem of the 2015 Nissan Leaf

Failure Date: 01/21/2016

Forward and side visibility obstructed by accumulation of fog/frost on windows due to hvac system's failure to produce warm air through defrosting vents. Weather conditions below ~ f with requisite humidity and/or precipitation results in dangerous lack of visibility while driving or stationary.

35 Wiper problem of the 2012 Nissan Leaf

Failure Date: 04/14/2015

Serious safety defect in many modern cars - hugh window pillar blockage!!! I am a retired engineer after almost 34 years of federal service for the us army mostly at fort monmouth NJ. About a year ago I almost hit a pedestrian who was walking very close to the front left of my car at night. Yesterday I looked left but did not see a large black SUV transiting from my right in broad daylight. I looked left and then started to slowly turn left as I looked right again and wow. . . It passed right in front! to my perspective, it literally came out of nowhere!!! both of these incidents were due to me looking quickly, not dwelling for a couple seconds. A vehicle or person must be in just the right spot and traveling slowly, so it happens only about once a year. I measured the front windshield pillar support width of about 30 cars in a parking lot. Most old cars and some modern ones have small window pillar blockage of 4 to 5 inches. However many modern cars have window pillar blockages of 5 to 6 inches, hiding much view! the Nissan Leaf has the worst about 5. 5 inches up high, but a phenomenal 8 inches at side mirror level. Unfortunately this is the height of my eyes in the driver's seat! it blocks the width of a whole car when the car is only a car lane away and at just the right angle! since the SUV was black, my eyes were transiting left to right and back in about a second and the SUV was going very slow to turn left in front of me, I saw nothing. Fortunately I was just starting to slowly pull out when I looked right again as it magically appeared right in front of me, so I stopped abruptly and avoided an accident! NHTSA should issue regulations that require vehicle manufacturers to return to the small window pillar support widths of the past decades. Thank you owen o'neill.
