Automatic Transmission problems of the 2001 Nissan Maxima

The contact owns a 2001 Nissan Maxima. While driving at an unknown speed, the vehicle jerked and shifted gears. The incident felt as if the vehicle was being rear-ended. The rpms increased to 3,000 and then decreased. The contact took the vehicle to a repair shop and the mechanic stated that the automatic transmission was the cause of the failure. The mechanic further stated that a new transmission was needed. The vehicle has not been repaired. The dealer and manufacturer have not been notified. The current mileage was approximately 172,000 and failure mileage was approximately 160,000.

Apparently, Nissan released a bulletin to its dealers, explaining that there was a known problem in the Maxima 2000 to 2003 (and other models as well). The bulletin instructs the dealer to replace the control valve assembly, but not the transaxle assembly. I am left with a car that shifts hard between 1st and 2nd, resulting in a "clunk" sound.
