Tl the contact owned a 2004 Nissan Maxima. While the vehicle was parked in the garage at the contact's home, the hood blew up and the front end burst into flames. The contact opened the garage door and extinguished the fire. There were no injuries or property damage. The maintenance indicator illuminated. 6 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 10/05/2016

On October 5, 2016 my husband came home from pt and parked the car under our carport. When he got out of the car there was not signs of smoke or any warning lights on in the car. He came in the house and started to get dressed and about 10 mintues later our neighbor was knocking on the door" screaming your car is on fire". The fire department was called out to put out the fire and after it was out they found that the fire started in the engine and ruled it an electrical fire. I called nna and explained what happened, sent photos, the police report, and fire report and they stated that it would take 6 weeks for them to even decide if they would investigate and that they would not help with any fees to have the car preserved. We live on a military base so we had to have the car towed away so that military housing could assess the damage that was done to the carport and we can not afford to pay daily for having the car sit at a tow yard while Nissan decides if the will even investigate the cause of the fire. I really feel like there should be a class action against Nissan because with all these complaints this can't just be isolated incidents.

Me radio and gps and air and hit is the problem 1 day work others day no.

8 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 01/08/2015

I bought a 2004 Nissan Maxima se a year and two months ago. It had 91,000 miles on it. The transmission started slamming gears a few months ago right around 100k miles. I had it looked at and no problem could be found. But then on 1/8/15 the transmission got stuck in 5th gear. It would go into park and reverse fine but in drive it went straight into 5th. I was able to get it to slowly drive to a friends house wher I parked and left it over night and borrowed a vehicle from them. The next morning I came back cranked it and it was fine. So I drove it towards the repair shop. It dies as I pull in. They run a diagnostic and they say the cam sensor is bad. The really expensive warranty that supposedly covers my car from bumper to bumper is claiming that this part is not covered in my bumper to bumper warranty so now I'm suck with a really expensive repair bill if I want to drive my car again. The thing is I get on line and see that there are thousands and thousands of people who have had the same problems I'm having and Nissan is aware of the defect in the year model of car and are doing nothing to fix it and no ones warranties are covering the repairs. I'm a single mother and I make very little money so I don't have the extra income to fix this problem that clearly should be a recall in the first place. I hope that you will make Nissan accountable one day for their blatant screwing of their customers.

9 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 09/18/2014

I bought used 2004 Nissan Maxima car at north shore auto mall on 9/18/14,the service tech. Drove car up to front of dealership w/car still running he test drove car w/me( didn't think anything about it at the time) I got in and we went for a test drive, car was great. Got back to dealer, gave the balance. Once I left dealer, while driving on highway the car started to skip & felt like it was going to stall, I pulled over to right lane, put hazards on w/traffic behind me, the car stalled, I almost caused a collision, cars were beeping, swerving out of the way, I couldn't get any acceleration with it in drive, so I put it in neutral & after 3 try's it started up w/much hesitation. I was scared for my life & others on the road, I took side streets to make it home & when I stopped at stop sign it stalled again, I repeated the same steps as above w/hazards on the whole ride home. Now I know why the service tech. Took test ride w/me. I had a friend with me as my witness. This car wont pass inspection , the check engine light will not turn off, I called dealer he said make an appt, I said I only have 7 days for inspection sticker, he said, he has nothing to do with service and to call them. I called on Monday the 22nd &1st,available appt. Wasn't til 9/25/14, my 7 days were up on that Thursday. He said he'll call me around noon, I waited til Friday 5pm, he nor anyone in serv. Called to update me & let me know car will be there over the weekend. What do I do & whats the time limit on fixing my car w/o any communication to me. Im sooooo upset at the lack of professionalism and ethics, im afraid if I say something derogatory, they will sabotage my car. Please help me. . !!!!.

11 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 07/03/2013

I was driving to work July 3rd, 2013 around 7:00am. I smelled smoke in my car so I pulled over, opened my hood and I didn't see anything. I got back in my car and continued to drive to work. I smelled smoke again, only this time to realize that my bottom was getting hot. I looked down to the right to see if my seat warmer was on and it wasn't. Then my seat began to move forward & backward by itself about 3 times. I turned back around to the front and there was a cloud of smoke in my face & flames at my feet. I quickly grabbed my phone and my ipad, released my seat belt, pulled up my emergency brake, opened the door and jumped out of my car falling onto the ground, jump up, and called 911. While waiting on the fire department & the police I stood there crying hysterically, terrified and watched my car go up in flames.

15 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 02/01/2013

I have a 2004 Nissan Maxima. Check engine light came on and within a few days problem began. When driving down an incline and turning one way or the other the car will die, steering will lock up and there is no way to steer. Unable to restart engine until you come to a complete stop, put in park then it takes multiple attempts to restart. You also cannot even steer over to the side of the road to get out of traffic. This almost caused me to have an accident on two different occasions. I found out that Nissan has a recall on altimas with this same issue, but will not cover and recall my vehicle. This is very dangerous and I do not understand why they would only recall certain makes when it is the same exact error code on both vehicles. It is a p3040 cam sensor/cam shaft recall through Nissan. However, they say my make and model does not fall under this recall. Shouldn't they recall all vehicles with this same problem? thank you for your help in this safety issue.

16 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 02/01/2013

When ever I shift to reverse the car pauses and then jerks. I took it to the shop and had new motor mount put in to solve the problem. For a few days you could barely feel the jerking when switching to reverse. Literally by the next week it was bad all over again and the jerking returned. Also, sometimes when I am driving I can feel the car, to my knowledge, switching gears. For example, this morning I was driving to work and going only around 25mph and as I started to accelerate the car jerked and slowed down for about 5 seconds before it returned to my normal speed. Thirdly, the power locks are not consistent. When I lock my doors with the automatic lock on the keys or even by pressing the power locks on the door handle it will only lock the front right passanger and the back left passenger door. This can be very frustrating as I have left my car doors unlocked unknowingly.

17 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 01/03/2011

Tl- the contact owns a 2004 Nissan Maxima. The contact stated that the abs sensor and warning light would activate, causing the vehicle to catch on fire. There were no injuries. The fire department filed a report. The vehicle was destroyed. The manufacturer was notified, but denied any assistance with repair to the failure. The dealer was not contacted. The failure and current mileage was 97,000. Nw.

18 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 07/03/2010

2004 Maxima automatic transmission - bought new; continually jerks when switching between gears with less than 100,000 miles; now the park lamps continually go out on the vehicle.

19 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 04/01/2010

I have a 2004 Nissan Maxima with 50,008 miles on it and recently had the abs coming on while I was driving and no dash warning lights on, brought it to the dealer to find out that the right rear abs speed sensor went bad but why didn't any warning lights come on they pulled the abs fuse and now the warning lights are on but you absolutely can not stop the vehicle when this happen this imagine hitting the brakes at 55 mph with your two year old in car and its not stopping because when you abs sensor goes bad it turns on the abs which does not allow your normal brakes to operate and do not throw any of your dash lights on, if I had the money for a lawyer I would be going after Nissan right now it should work so if you have a problem with your abs it should turn at least your warning lights and then disconnect the abs so you can use your normal brakes to actually stop the car. . . . . Also none of the front end and rear end body lines match up to none of the gaps between hood and fenders are the same can get finger in one side and not the other same with the trunk, and the car has only been in one accident that I know of that I reported had gotten side swiped at 45 mph on drivers side by big truck also notice that front and rear windshields do not have Nissan stamp on windows the car fax was clean well the on the dealership I bought car from was clean I think this car was wrecked front and rear and fixed and wasn't reported then sold to me with 26,800 miles when I bought it no sits at 50,000 cause have nothing but problems with I would like a state inspector to look at car my opinion is car is unsafe but only one I have and still owe more than 10,000 dollars on it please help.

20 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 02/26/2010

I am a Nissan Maxima lover!! I have had a 95 max, a 00 max, and now a 04 max. I had no major problems what so ever with my Maximas except for this 04. This car is literally driving me crazy! first the car started jerking. Then my windows started sticking my driver and passenger window will go down then sometimes not come back up. Then later it started making this embarrassing rattling noise. Everytime I got an oil change it would stop for a while. I needed a dependable car which is why I got another Nissan but about two weeks ago I was grocery shopping with my kids and as I turned on the highway headed home the whole car shut down in the middle of traffic. How dangerous is that. I managed to coast to a gas station and had to call aaa to tow it home now I am stuck with a car that I cannot drive and have to continue to make car payments on. Ive been told it was a mixture of my transmission and timing chain. There have been several reports on this site with transmission and timing chain problems. Unless Nissan does something about this my next car will be a Ford fusion! love my Maxima but cannot endanger my kids with an undependable vehicle. With all that business Nissan gets what harm will it cause for you to help your customers fix cars that you caused the problem to with this faulty engine and transmission problems. It would keep customers like me coming back to Nissans. I do like the new models but I dont want to go through this problem with a newer car. Nissan what are you going to do?????.

21 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 01/03/2010

I own a Maxima 2004 and it accelerate by itself every time I drive under 35mph or 10mph above. They already repaired the transmission, change some wires, replaced abs sensors, and did some other electrical work and the problem doesn't go away.

22 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 07/10/2009

We have been having problems with our transmission for a few months now, we took it to the dealership (cerritos Nissan) and they say the problem is that we need a new transmission. This will be our third tranny and the car only has 120,000+ miles on it. Our first transmission lasted 5yrs. Before having to be replaced and now this one has lasted 3yrs. The transmission now is stuck in 5th gear when you switch to the tip tronic setting to see the gearing and this is the reason there is no power during acceleration. We also need motor mounts now because of the violent jerking that the tranny does when put into gear. And the dealership also said we needed a timing chain replacement because it was bad as well, total repair cost $6700. 00+. I've recently taken my car to another mechanic and he said the timing chain was perfectly fine. Our driver side window switches do not work again, that was replaced 1yr ago. And we are now on our third set of front struts.

23 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 05/14/2009

Abs controller failure without cause. Speedometer will not work because of it.

24 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 03/23/2009

My 2004 Nissan door actuator is failing regularly. I understand that this is a common problem with Nissans after reading many internet blogs. Is there a recall on that item?.

25 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 12/04/2008

I have a 2004 Nissan Maxima and I read so many complaint about this vehicle especially the transmission I am having and there hasn't been a recall I have had problem with this vehicle such as axle radiator navigation don't work went out electrical problems car is pulling because of transmission.

26 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 07/25/2008

I have on 3 occasions had my car shut off on me either while driving or while parked. I have had many parts replaced on my car. Just recently, my car slipped gears and would not go above 25 mph. I figured it was the transmission and I was right. Nissan replaced my transmission ( a few days before my extended warranty expired). Then I noticed my alarm system did not work after I got the car back. Less than a week later, my gears slipped, the car started to shake and it shut off on me in the middle of the road and it could not be restarted. Luckily, nobody got hurt. This problem needs to be looked at and a recall should be issued.

27 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 06/11/2008

It started with a loud noise out of the left front wheel then the abs light came on then the back and service engine light and then the speedometer would read the speed. Then it shuts down if im at a stop light for a while or out of nowhere this is not safe!!! at all as it can cause and accident. Its has happened at turning lanes and the car behind thank god stop in time or else he would of rear ended me. Soo I took it to the dealer and said it needed a new abs pump, harness, and ipdm. I've only had this car for 9months its a 2004 Nissan Maxima with 56,000miles on it and for the price I paid this shouldn't be happening to a car that claims to be sooooo reliable. Not happy at all!!!!! now im stuck paying $2500. 00 for repair and something that I've read sooo many complaints about and Nissan just avoids it and says cant do anything since it has no warranty very disappointed!!!! angry!!! frustrated!!! and broke!!!!!.

28 Electrical System problem

29 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 05/15/2006

This is problem #1: (I had so far 4/5 major problems) purchased 2004 Nissan Maxima brand new. Within 2 months of driving this car, the thermostat kept registering at h, pinned at h. When I took it to the dealership in huntington, NY, they could not find the problem. Was told, when it pinns at hot again, bring the car in. Well, when I driving to work and the thermostat was pinned at hot again, I called the dealership to tell them and the receptionist said I could not bring my car in, it was not an emergency. I informed her that I don't know what type of problem this can be and what if my engine ceases? she said there was nothing I can do, and I can come in next week. I drove there anyway, and had to grab a mechanic to see that my car thermostat was indeed pinned at hot. It turned out to be a "electrical" problem and they had to replace the entire thermostat, and dash board. Also, while all my problems were going on, my trunk pops open when I reverse every now and then. Of course, the wonderful mechanics at the service dept in huntington could not duplicate the problem. . What a surprise??.

30 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 04/07/2006

Car won't start.

31 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 07/27/2004

On two (2) seperate occasions I have been driving my vehicle (2004 Nissan Maxima) when my brakes have went out completely. The brake pedal was on the floor when I went to use, leaving me with no braking power whatsoever. On both occasions, after stopping the vehicle and turning the engine off, the brakes resumed normal function after a few minutes. I took my vehicle to the Nissan dealership, where it was purchased, and was told they could find nothing wrong with the vehicle. Clearly, this malfunction is the result of an electrical/computer problem.

32 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 07/12/2004

Problem 1 of 5: purchased 2004 Maxima brand new on 4/12/04. End of June, 2004, noticed temperature gauge pinned at hot. Also, sometimes when I reverse, my trunk pops open. Called Nissan to bring car in. Was not given appointment until 7/12/04. Of course, the wonderful mechanics at Nissan huntington could not experience the same problem and said my car was operating property at that time. Gave me my car back and was told the next time my car is pinned at hot, bring it right in. Then, a few weeks later, the thermostat was pinned at hot again. When I called Nissan the woman who answers the phone for service would not let me bring my car in despite what the mechanic told me a few weeks back. She would not give me an appointment until the following week. I told her that this could be a major engine problem and what if my car engine fails. She did not care. So I drove the car in anyway, and had to cut the line at the service dept and grab a mechanic so they can see for themselves that the thermostat was indeed pinned at hot and I am not crazy. This was on 8/11/04, my car is just about 4 months old now. The dealership finally determined faulty temperature gauge and placed gauge. I only had 3,992 miles on this car. The dealership did give me a rent a car because I made a big stink about my car being broken and I would be out of a car for 4 days.

33 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 03/31/2004

Gps navigation system gives a disc error message when trying to use it.

34 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 01/30/2004

The car started up and was running fine. My wife went back into the house to get our daughter and found the car had stalled. The car has not started since. I am concerned about this situation, because of the fact that the car justed stalled for no apparent reason. I hate to think what could have happened if my wife was driving the car. In addition, according to several post on edmunds. Com this is happening to other consumers. I have had other problems with this car since I purchased it 3-12-03. It has been back to the dealership several times for the following reasons: service engine lights coming on, leaking sunroof, cd not working, a fog/condensation behind center console screen, and interior molding coming loose. I have called Nissan USA and spoke to matt at 310-771-8454 ext 8454. If you can help with this please contact me at 410-239-0119. Thank you for your time and efforts.
