3 Tire problem

Failure Date: 12/18/2008

My 04 Maxima currently has just over 50,000 miles on it. I have noticed some hard shifts over the past few months, but they had been very intermittent. The other day however I noticed the service engine soon light was on and when accelerating from a stop I realized that I barely had any power! after engine shut off the acceleration was back to normal. The service engine soon light remained on. The code was pulled and reset. P 0797 pressure control solenoid, stuck on. Repair cost approximately 4000 dollars. Problem outstanding. The struts have also gone bad. Problem outstanding. I have also had to replace the battery. The front right rotor is warped and causes steering wheel shim when downhill braking. Problem outstanding. My car had begun to idle very low twice and actually died once. Problem outstanding. A weld on the heat shield of the catalytic converter has come loose and causes a noticeable vibration when accelerating when cold. This subsides once it's heated up probably due to metal expansion. Problem outstanding. I have also replaced the tires due too bad alignment camber on some and also castor I believe it was wearing the tires unevenly.

Failure Date: 03/19/2008

The contact owns a 2004 Nissan maxma. The vehicle has goodyear eagle rs-a tires, size p245/45r18. The contact stated that all four of her tires were replaced under a recall. A few days later, she felt a vibration when driving various speeds. The tire dealer stated that the failure was due to the road conditions. In March of 2008, she took the vehicle to the dealer for a tune-up and noticed that the steering wheel was shaking uncontrollably. The dealer stated that the failure was due to the replacement tires. The contact went back to the tire dealer and they replaced two more of the tires. After the replacement, the tire dealer stated that the vehicle would still drive "roughly" due to the road. In June, after a long road trip, the steering wheel shook so much that the contact could visibly see it shaking. She took the vehicle back to the tire dealer and they changed one more tire. She spoke with the vehicle manufacturer and was referred to the tire manufacturer. The tire manufacturer began compiling a case for her based on the failures. The recall number was unknown. The current mileage was approximately 47,150 and failure mileage was approximately 45,000. Updated 09/24/08 the consumer stated the issue was resolved. Updated 10/01/08.

8 Tire problem

Failure Date: 05/30/2007

I own a 2004 Nissan Maxima. I had the tires replaced at around 30,000 miles due to "cupping" on the tires. They wore terribly and were making a terrible noise. I then had to have the right front strut and bearings replaced at 31,000 miles and now at 47,000 miles my left front strut and bearings needs replacing, which will cost me nearly $400. 00. The car has a bad vibration in the steering wheel at 50-60 miles per hour and when braking. Now, my new set of tires have worn badly and are so noisy that you cannot hold a normal conversation at freeway speed. I love the look of the car, but I cannot wait to get rid of it! it is obviously not safe if the suspension bounces you all over the road! additionally, I have had to have the heat shield replaced once and now it needs it again. The power outlets are in the worst possible places I have ever seen. Nissan. . . . Please do something about this before your loyal customers pay for this flaw!.

9 Tire problem

Failure Date: 03/08/2007

The contact owns a 2004 Nissan Maxima. While driving 5 mph into the driveway it was difficult to steer the vehicle. The contact observed a large crack around the rim of the tire. The dealer informed the contact that all four of the tires were a safety hazard and they recommended that she no longer drive the vehicle. The goodyear manufacturer advised the contact to take the vehicle to town fair tire and speak with a representative. The dot# for 3 tires are m6a9cmwr1703, and one tire dot# was m6a9cmwr5203. All of the tires are goodyear eagle, size 245/45r18v. Town fair inspected the tires and confirmed with goodyear that all four tires were a safety hazard at 23,000 miles. Goodyear stated that they would pay 75% of the tire replacement; however, the contact feels that goodyear should pay the full amount. The contact filed a complaint with goodyear and was given case # 888402. The contact will also be filing a complaint with the attorney general in her local area. The contact has one of the tires if necessary for the investigation. The current mileage was 23,552. Update 04/17/07. *.

1) flat tire on Nissan Maxima 2004 car with 2003 manufactured good year eagle rs-a p245 45r18 96v tires. . . . 2) ties are defective an independent goodyear employee told me so, and told me they are unsafe to drive on and still would not replace them because they have not been recalled as of yet but offered a $100 off each tire, they are $300 tires. . The tires have 24k miles on them, the front tires are worse then the rear but all are the same. The tread still has at least half the tread if not more left. . . There is severe cracking and it is possible they could blow out on others and cause serious injury, I have pictures I can send if you send me a direct email address. . 3) I took the car to goodyear they said the tire is defected and unsafe to drive, but sent me on my way because I do not believe I should have to pay a dime for unsafe defective tires. . . . . . . . Someone will be killed driving on those tires. . . . They are a road hazard. . .

16 Tire problem

Failure Date: 10/19/2005

No incidents led up to failure. Went to Nissan dealer and complained of road noise from front of car. Dealer said 2 tires were cracked and posed a danger of coming apart. Said they would be liable if allowed me to leave without new tires. Investigated on the internet: there are multiple reports of goodyear eagle tires on 2004 Nissan Maxima's (oem) that have developed dangerous cracks. These should be recalled. Cracks are appearing on "side facing inward" part of tires not easily visable by consumers. Mileage on tires was 30348. Was told to take tires to goodyear dealer but have not gotten there yet.

17 Tire problem

Failure Date: 08/24/2005

2004 Nissan Maxima that has continental, contitouring , tire, size p225/55/r17 leaked air almost to the point of being flat. This happens over a period of time, such as two weeks, these leaks were slow, and occurred four tires. Consumer was driving about 35 mph in a school zone and heard a pop, pulled ove,r and the right rear tire was completely flat on the rim. This occurred near a gas station ,and consumer drove there to gas station to put air in the tire, but the air system at the gas station would not work. Called family member to bring an air piggy and the tire would not inflate. Waited for tire dealer to open because this was early in the morning and they could not inflate the tire. Upon further inspection they note tha t inside of the tire running vertically from the rim to the top of the tire had a split. Due to tread separation this could not be repaired , and a new tire would have to be purchased. Contacted dealer, who suggested discussing this matter with tire manufacturer. Contacted continental, who said consumer would have to taketire to an authorized service center which was a considerable drive for inspection of the tire. Called a second time, and they said they would send out a call tag and request tires back. Consumer had all four tires replaced with a different brand and paid for this out of pocket. Have not sent those tires to continental at this time.

18 Tire problem

Failure Date: 07/30/2005

Maxima 2004 has eagle rs-a 245-45 tires which became cracked in a circular pattern at 32,000. Goodyear replaced tires and offered prorate, but cost was still $555. 00. Internet Maxima owners have found cracks on inside of tire as well as early as 16,000 miles. I believe that this is dangerous. The noise was greater, the grip of the tire seemed to be less, the bumps on the road were more noticeable, and the tires felt "wishy-washy" at times. Once I put on the new tires again with eagle rs-a the car felt totally different and better, although it was bitter sweet to have the same tires again. Can you help in this matter please?.

19 Tire problem

Failure Date: 05/27/2005

Consumer leased new Maxima. About 6 months later had to replace a tire. Took vehicle to service dealer and had replacement. Over this weekend a different tire came off while driving, but the repaired tire has slits in the tread as all the other ones do as well. The dealer noted this was a problem with the 2004 Maxima. Also there is shock problems known to Nissan but no recalls but dealers are aware of this and must replace those issues including the sunroof which apparently can shatter under extreme heat. Car is currently in shop for repair.

20 Tire problem

Failure Date: 05/20/2005

Purchased 2004 Nissan Maxima 3. 5 se in July, 2003. It has aluminum wheels ("rims") and low profile tires. In March, 2005, I hit a pothole, which flattened the front passenger tire and dented the rim. I had to change the tire, and then replaced that rim (tire was ok). In may, 2005, my front driver tire was low. I drove a half mile at 20 mph to the closest gas station and filled the tire. I took it to the dealer to investigate why it was low. They noted that the rim was cracked, said it was dangerous to drive that way, and put the "donut" spare on in place of the cracked rim. Besides the cracked rim being a safety issue (the dealer says that I "must have hit something", and claims to have no warranty liability), I believe the wheel/tire design of the 2004 Maxima is a safety issue. I have been driving for 32 years and never had a problem with a rim on a car. Now in the space of a month or two, I had a dented rim that stranded me in a remote area until I could change the tire, and now a cracked rim that I had to immediately remove from the car. I don't know whether it is because the rim is aluminum and perhaps brittle and not sturdy, or because low profile tires leave relatively little tire between the road and the rim, making "everyday potholes" that are common in the northeast in the springtime a hazard to the wheels ("rims"). But after having two rims that failed just a month or two apart such that they each had to be totally replaced, I believe there is a design flaw in this car that lends itself to these safety problems that I experienced with my car. I opened a complaint on this issue with Nissan, file #4947551. I was given no assurance that any action would be taken, except that they would "look at this", and was told they would not even send me any response to my complaint to let me know their decision as to what they do or don't plan to do regarding my issue.

21 Tire problem

Failure Date: 05/18/2005

I have a 2004 Nissan Maxima, it came with goodyear tires. The tires now make very loud road noise. The dealer, after 3 or 4 trips advised the road noise was due to a bent rim. (the car has never been driven roughly, bent rim must have been from ordinary driving and/or average pot hole). I had the bent rim fixed. However, the loud road noise continues. The dealer says there is no recall on these tires & tells me I need to take the issue with the tire dealership, or manufacturer. They evidently refuse to back the products, they put on their new cars, they sell on their lots. I also had a defective strut on the right rear. It took three trips to the dealership, before the problem was finally found. And then a fourth trip, to have it fixed, once they had ordered & received the part. It's too bad such a potentially great car, has created such a bad experience for me, a first time Nissan buyer. This, due to lack of support from Nissan motors & lack of quality control on suspensions & tires. I will never purchase another Nissan automobile, due to this experience & lack of product backing by the manufacturer.

23 Tire problem

Failure Date: 01/13/2005

The driver noticed while driving,a squeaking noise was heard coming from the rear of the vehicle. The vehicle started vibrating uncontrollably. The driver was able to maintain control of the vehicle and drove to the dealer for inspection. The mechanic informed the driver that the structure of the vehicle was design defect from the manufacturer. A fix was not available at this time. Two months after purchase, the brakes began to squeal. Dealer said it was a creep groan and could not repair the problem. Consumer experienced 4 flat tires (goodyear p245/45r18 - model # 96vs2eagrs-avsbrptl) all found to have defective splits called sidewalk circumferential cracks. Consumer received a safety recall notice regarding a sun roof shatter condition.

Failure Date: 12/22/2004

Cracks in all four tires necessitated replacement after only 21,000 miles.

25 Tire problem

Failure Date: 10/06/2004

Steering wheel shimmies at speeds from 50-80 mph and also shimmies harshly when braking at lower speeds. I had this in for repair twice so far. The first time they turned the rotors. The next time they rotated the tires. Also, had gps/nav system in for repair three times to date. The dvd was reprogrammed the first time and replaced twice. I'm getting ready to file a lemon law complaint.

26 Tire problem

Failure Date: 08/16/2004

I am experiencing severe vibrations in the steering of my 2004 Nissan Maxima. In March of 2004 after several trips for rotations and balancing, all four tires were cracked on the enter wall of the tires. Nissian suggested that I go to goodyear dealer and have the tires replaced. Goodyear replaced the tires and five months later, all four tires have cracked again. We questioned nissian to see if there was a problem with the vehicle that was causing the tires to crack. Nissian advise any problem concering the tires should be taken up with goodyear and said it was nothing they could do. At this time, August 17, 2004 I still have all four cracked tires on my vehicle and it is vibrating even more. Goodyear advised that the only set of tires made for this vehicle is goodyear eagle rs-ap245/45r18. Goodyear advised us that they do not have this tire in stock and it will be about a week or so before they can get it. I was informed that they have replaced several tires for this year make and model car.

27 Tire problem

Failure Date: 07/17/2004

I am experiencing severe vibrations in the steering of my new 2004 Maxima. After several trips for alignment, rotations and balancing - I was advised I had a bad tire by the local Nissan dealer. They suggested I go to the local good year dealer and have the tire replaced. Upon arriving at the good year dealer - I was informed that they had replaced several tires for the year, make and model and it was suggested that there was a manufacturing defect in the design of the car and it's ability to absorb oscillation of the tire.

28 Tire problem

Failure Date: 07/11/2004

Front end vibrates when driving on the freeway. Car has been to dealer multiple times for tire rotation, tire replacement and lowering of air pressure in tires. Issue is still not resolved and I am told this is how Nissan cars drive. The consumer has requested that NHTSA disregard this complaint. The consumer was responded to about her request to drop the complaint. Front end vibration as described by the consumer may result in a steering or suspension system failure therefore NHTSA requests from the consumer for information to be kept in files.

29 Tire problem

Failure Date: 05/01/2004

I have a 2004 Maxima with less than 1500 miles. There is a noise apparently coming from the tires that sounds like a ringing noise. When going over a line crack in the pavement or bump between 20-50 mph it sounds like a hollow ringing sound. I upgraded tires from factory installed to michelins at about $500 more and the ringing continues. What gives?.

30 Tire problem

Failure Date: 06/07/2003

Front end vibration. Dealership did a front end alignment, but it corrected the problem temporarily. Also, dealership noticed cracks in the front driver and rear passenger side tires. The tire cracks may be the cause of the vibration.
