1 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 06/17/2023

The airbag light is on and blinking. I did call the local Nissan dealer and they told me there was not a recall for this problem on the 2009 Nissan Maxima. This seems very unfair because several recalls have been made on the airbags. Also I was told over 5 years ago that the struts on my car were defective when I had my brakes repaired. I did call the Nissan company and they told me my year was not included in the recall. My car was driving so badly I was having problems controlling it and I had to go ahead and get the front struts replaced and shocks replaced on the back and they had to put a stabilizer bar (sway bar link) on it also. I recently had this done. This airbag light had come on 4 years ago but I was thinking it was my seat belt light. When I would remove my purse to the floor it would go off. My brother took my manual out and told me it was the airbag and not the seat belt light. It blinks all the time now. I firmly believe the Nissan company know this 2009 Maxima has defects but they refuse to acknowledge it. Appears they could care less about our safety.

3 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 01/25/2022

Not sure what is going I have spent so much money replacing parts on this car. And it is still not fixed. It’s one thing after another . I cannot fight out why the engine light is on its like the whole care is malfunctioning. And no one knows what it is. And heavy smoke from tail pipe. While driving it feels like it wants to stall like the gas gets stuck . I was told to buy a control module but it didn’t need that . And I can’t afford to keep trying to fix it. It’s my only car and I’m a non working single mom trying my best to fix it. But this car is causing so much depression I don’t know what else to do. Because it’s costing too much and times is already hard.

11 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 06/16/2019

The car loses power as I'm driving, I replaced alternator and fuel pump I'm at around $1100 in with repairs and labor. The problem still exist I turn car on and drive within 10 mins the car loses power and acceleration then eventually dies. This happened on the highway on one occasion, very frustrating and scary to say the least. It's not the battery cuz it's also new. This is getting scary and ridiculous.

13 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 03/19/2019

I was driving on the hwy, no vehicles around me,and it was a sunny day, I heard what sounded like a gun shot. I pulled over and my moon roof over the driver seats exploded out. The glass flew off my car. About a week and a half later as I was driving on the interstate, my moon roof in the backseat exploded out, causing all the glass to fly off the car. Now my whole tempered glass is shattered. Thankfully at the time of the glass exploding, I was the only one in the vehicle. But the day my rear moon roof exploded I had to pick up my kids. I was only driving 20-25 mph and the shards of glass kept dropping on me and my kids (from the wind blowing the fabric) my oldest daughter got glass stuck in her as well.

14 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 10/27/2018

My car keeps losing power after driving it for awhile. I had a new alternator and battery installed. It continues to lose power and starts up after a few hours. This is unsafe and very scary.

15 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 11/23/2017

Multiple instances of the escl (electronic steering column lock) failing. Nissan is offering to replace free of charge for vehicles with certain VIN numbers (NHTSA #10119190, Nissan campaign id pc516). However, Nissan has stated that my VIN# is not part of the program. Nissan has also told me that the NHTSA set the parameters for the voluntary service campaign, and they are unable to explain why my car is not included in the program. I would like to know if it is true the NHTSA set the VIN# parameters for this program, and if so why my car, which has had this problem multiple times, is not included. If it is not true that the NHTSA set the parameters, what are the potential liabilities Nissan faces in blaming the problem on the NHTSA. This is an extremely dangerous problem that has left me stranded on multiple occasions. . It happens without warning, and has potential to strand drivers in potentially harmful situations.

Steering wheel lock problem-I was not aware of this problem and was not able to benefit from the extended warranty. I was stranded late in the evening and was not able to get home and did not want to leave my car. My car was parked and would not start. The experience was traumatizing.

19 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 06/13/2016

My 2009 Nissan Maxima is no longer starting and the brake and steering wheel have locked. It does not recognize that I have a key even though I do. Any attempt to start the vehicle results in a sporadic tick tick or screeching type noise for lack of a better word.

20 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 06/09/2016

My dashboard is melting to the point where there is a dangerous glare from it on my window when I drive. Not only is it sticky and impossible to clean but the glare makes it hard to see the road.

21 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 01/20/2016

My Nissan Maxima 2009 would not start and had to be towed to find out that it was my locking steering control on the column. I was stranded and Nissan north America refused to cover this even though they new this flaw would happen at 72000 miles my car had 76000. My car was parked in my work parking lot. This should be a recall. . . .

22 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 09/09/2015

Changed my battery now my car will not start and I am unable to press down the brakes or turn the steering wheel.

23 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 08/03/2015

The dashboard of my 2009 Nissan Maxima melted and became sticky. The pattern in the substrate is now smooth and glossy causing a blinding glare when driving as it reflects light directly in the drivers eyes, both from the dash and the glass above.

24 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 02/10/2015

I get in my car by opening the doors with my intelligent key (in other words, the battery isn't dead). Once inside the car, the key light blinks on even though I had the key in my hand. I can't start the car or even press the brake in, the car won't go into acc mode because it doesn't detect the key (again, I'm able to lock, unlock doors, open hood and even sound off the alarm through the same intelligent key. . ?) . I put the fob into the slot and it flashes to eject it. . . Now my car will not start and my windows are stuck down. . . I went to get my other key fob and still doesn't read the key. . . Now my car is stuck and I can not drive it. . . Soooo what I have tried to do was beating on the steering column, making it tilt and all over n over and nothing. . . Unplugging the battery for over 30 minutes in hopes of 'restarting' the alarm system putting in the intelligent key into the slot where the key goes (off the left side of the steering wheel) . . Still key light blinks indicating I need a key. . . . Now looking this up there are alot others with this problem with a 09-10 Nissan Maxima and the gtr has same issue and a recall was done on that. . . So can we please get a recall on the 09 nissian Maxima so this can be solved for myself and others?.

25 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 01/16/2015

2009 Nissan Maxima, purchased new--key fob light indicator illuminated on dashboard, car won't start, brake lights work, key fob unlocks doors and trunk. Warranty expired about 1k miles ago. I was told that the steering lock part, which may repair/solve the matter is about $1200. I am repulsed and utterly disgusted. Prior to this matter, the tilt feature [for steering wheel) on the car ceased to work.

26 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 01/04/2015

The car - a 2009 Nissan Maxima in excellent condition - would not start at all - no turn-over, no electrics, I. E. The automatic windows could not be rolled up (during ice storm), only an unfamiliar "key" light lit up on the dash board. Car could not be towed: aaa said it appears to be "steering wheel lock failure", approximately $700 - $1000 to repair. . .

27 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 09/13/2014

My dashboard is all melted from the sun uv rays. It looks awful its all sticky like glue and also causes a glare on the windshield at night and in the day. . Read more...

28 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 08/05/2014

I am experiencing shuddering/hesitation at take off. No warning lights showing so I called world care Nissan in san antonio, TX and was told this is normal. This continues to happen and seems more pronounced now.

29 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 06/09/2014

The car has power. All electronics seem to work, however, when I depress the brake and push the ignition button the car will not start. The first time I try to start it, it will turn over very slowly. Then every time after that, it will give me a metallic clicking sound but will not turn over. I went through the cold and hot start up procedures to no avail. The car still has power, I. E. If I place the button to the on position everything will turn on electronically, but the car still will not start. I have had this problem for several months now. The battery is an interstate battery and has been tested as good. The only time the car will start now is if I get a jump.

30 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 04/08/2014

I have a 2009 Nissan Maxima s-model and I was driving home and I had my sunroof tilted. The sunroof glass made a loud noise and the glass shattered above my head. I looked for signs of an object hitting the top of my car but none were present. The glass shattered from the inside of the car outwards.

31 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 03/03/2014

On 3/3/14 my 2009 Nissan Maxima would not start. Symptoms of this issue - key recognized(unlocks and when inserted into key fob port there is a notification) - pressing start button does not work, locked remains illuminated(eg acc and on do not activate) - Nissan intelligent key warning light - all lights come on in the car - brake lights work - electronic seats still move I experienced a dead battery just 3 months earlier so I was sure this was not the issue. Plus I had a new battery. I googled a combination of the symptoms with my model/year and many links came up. Turned out to be the "steering lock failure" which was under a extended warranty. 5 years or 72 k miles. Worst part of the experience was dealing with the people at the midway Nissan on bell road dealership in phoenix. The experience left me knowing that they care more about making money today than earning return customers. Luckily they warranty paid for everything. But they were willing and ready to screw me over.

32 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 10/29/2013

I have been informed by my dealership that my transfer case is leaking and if I do not repair or replace it the car while driving will basically the gears in the mechanism will grind make a loud noise and just stop. That sounds like a safety concern. When I contacted Nissan USA I was informed my car was out of warranty and they would not replace it even if it was a safety issue. It also is well documented that Nissan has a problem with the transfer case leaking. Why is Nissan not replacing this part while under warranty if they no there is an issue.

33 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 07/25/2013

I bought my Maxima last year and noticed my dash was sticky tried to wipe it off with a wet rag using water and it would not go away it is now spreading to me it looks like the resin in the dash material is melting. I have never seen such a thing it I looks like I have water on my dash. Wheni am driving into the sun the reflection of the area shines on to my windshield almost blinding me. No other part of the interior looks this way. I am concerned with driving it an do not see this to be something I should be responsible to replace. Like I said I have owned a lot of vehicles and have never seen a dash board look like this.

34 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 01/08/2013

On the morning of 1/8/13 I drove my 2009 Nissan Maxima to my commuter parking lot, and realized that I didn't completely park in my space after turning the car off. I proceeded to start my car with the push stop/start but nothing happened. As soon as I realized my vehicle wouldn't start, I became very upset because I just purchased the vehicle last January and only had a powertrain warranty that was still active. I immediately contacted the service department of the Nissan dealership I purchased the vehicle from and complained, while crying lemon law. The service technician attempted to help me start the vehicle while over the phone and after realizing what the issue may be, he explained that there is a common issue with the 2009 Nissan Maxima's that he believes the computer module in the steering column had gone bad. I asked if Nissan had recalled that part since it was a common issue, his answer was no and informed me it's going to cost around $750 just to purchase the part, and with labor around $900-$1000 to repair. I said if this is a common issue with my model, then why didn't Nissan recall that part. The service technician had no explanation other than mentioning, it hasn't happened to enough people yet which I feel is completely absurd! this is a huge safety issue as my vehicle wouldn't start without any indication, or warning beforehand. Please help!.

35 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 08/24/2011

Dashboard is melting. It is sticky and has a glue like residue on the surface. It causes a severe glare when driving towards the sun. This creates an unsafe driving condition. Additionally, the console trim is disintegrating.
