37 Steering problem

Failure Date: 03/17/2016

Steering lock box repair. Extended warranty was issued & needs to be extended indefinitely. This is a manufacturer defect. Consumers will experience this inconvenience at different lifecycles of the vehicle & should be given the same reimbursements/courtesy as other 2009 Nissan Maxima or altima owners.

38 Steering problem

Failure Date: 02/12/2016

The steering control module has failed, and will not allow the vehicle to start. Seems to be very common issue, and the same part and part number has been recalled on there other model cars, but not with this vehicle, when this part fail it will leave you stranded and not be able to start the car with the steering wheel possibly locked in place.

39 Steering problem

Failure Date: 02/11/2016

Stranded twice car will not start because of steering lock module not releasing allowing the car to start.

40 Steering problem

Failure Date: 01/31/2016

Luckily in the driveway after loading car for food bank delivery, I tried to start but no light asking to press foot on brake to start came on was my first clue something was wrong. Key locks/unlocks/open trunk/alarm works but will not start engine. "key warning light" comes on. Tried both keys but nothing. Disconnected/reconnected battery without success. Steering wheel is unlocked. Insert fob to try & start manually but nothing. My neighbor is a local mechanic & came over to help. Stumped him so I guess I will be calling to get a tow to dealership in the morning after unloading food bank donations! after reading several hundred complaints about this issue in just a matter of few minutes, I am sure there are hundreds of thousand Nissan unsatisfied customers who have had to deal with this. Step up Nissan & do the right thing. I do not have $1000 to fix this problem. We also have an altima so wondering when that will go too. No more Nissans for us!.

41 Steering problem

The contact owns a 2009 Nissan Maxima. When the contact arrived home and turned off the vehicle, the steering wheel did not lock into position. The contact stated that the steering wheel would not move. The vehicle was not diagnosed nor repaired. The manufacturer was not notified. The approximate failure mileage was 24,000.

42 Steering problem

Failure Date: 01/08/2016

Steering wheel lock - ignition lock assembly failure. I purchased my 2009 Nissan MA xima in Nov 2012 and my car has been running pretty good until the dreaded day when I was stranded because my car would not start. I had my car towed and I was told that thevsteeringbwheel lock assembly needed to be replaced $1189. 00. I don't know about you, but im not made out of money. After a little research I discovered that this problem has been happening since 09. This is outrageous and Nissan should have owned up and fixed this problem along time ago. This is unacceptable and there should be a recall and not just a bulletin. There is a problem and nissa needs to fix there wrong, instead selling cars knowing that there is a problem. A recall needs to be issued and Nissan needs to do the repairs immediately with no charge to their customers.

43 Steering problem

Failure Date: 01/03/2016

Key indicator lock light came on. Car would not start completely disabled. Did research to see if others have had same problem on youtube and this site to find that multiple people have had same issue. Had vehicle towed to dealership $1,100 estimate!!!.

44 Steering problem

Failure Date: 01/01/2016

Steering lock malfunctions stranding the driver in possibly dangerous locations or hours. Had to tow to dealer and pay $1094 for repairs.

45 Steering problem

Failure Date: 01/01/2016

I pulled into my mother's driveway stopped the car to run into the house for about an hour. Went back to start the car and it wouldn't start. The yellow key indicator light came on as if it wasn't recognizing my I-key. Was told by Nissan dealer this was steering lock malfunction common in the vehicles. Was given a quote of $900 not including towing. Contacted consumer affairs upon seeing that this was a common issue to insure I wasn't covered by any warranty etc. No was the answer to that. I find it disturbing that Nissan is aware of this issue and is ok with leaving consumers stranded in possibly undesirable or unsafe situations. I am a 2nd time Nissan owner but after how this is being handled this will be my last Nissan vehicle. I was told to take the vehicle to Nissan for diagnostic because a case could be opened by consumer affairs to possible assist with the payment but they only assist more reliable customers, which they didn't feel I was since I hadn't been going to Nissan for my services. I purchased this car second hand and was not under warranty. I went more cost efficient routes for servicing as the one time I tried to contact them for assistance in the past staff was rude. I just can't believe I am left int his position for a know issue with no assistance from the company.

46 Steering problem

Failure Date: 12/17/2015

While traveling west on the PA turnpike, my steering wheel just dropped to the lowest position!! scared the hell out of me. I ended up getting the car to the shoulder of the road. I was able to get the steering position up at little to stay and lock. Drove the car back to my local Nissan dealership to tell me that the motor for the steering wheel tilt and/or telescopic needs replaced!! what a freaking nightmare. . . $800 plus dollars for repairs plus tax!! what a crock of bull!! I see that this is happening to a lot of Nissan owners!! why isnt the government doing anything!! not until somebody has a fatality accident!!.

47 Steering problem

Failure Date: 12/08/2015

Car was parked. Car will not start steering locked up.

48 Steering problem

Failure Date: 12/07/2015

Got off of work and I tried to crank my car and it wouldn't start. The key symbol was on but that's it. So I got it towed to local mechanic through my insurance and I payed 35. They couldn't find the problem so I had to get it towed the car lot where I bougjt it from and it cost me $125. I've since did research and it seems that a lot of people has having the same problem and paying over $1, 000 out of pocket. Now iam waiting for my leinholder to tell me I owe them $1, 000. I really like my 2009 Nissan Maxima but I will not buy another one.

49 Steering problem

Failure Date: 12/06/2015

Upon successfully unlocking the car, the push ignition failed to respond and the car would not start. The keyfob was able to lock and unlock the car, even set off the panic alarm but pressing the ignition button would not move the car out of "lock" position. The car had been parked for about 1. 5 hrs before having been driven several miles. Upon diagnosis by a licensed mechanic, the electronic steering lock module was found to have failed. On further online research, it was learned that this part is susceptible to failure and it is common to find many 2009 Nissan owners of several models (altima, Maxima, 370z) to have had this problem, within and outside of warranty.

50 Steering problem

Failure Date: 11/23/2015

I was stranded at work due to my steering wheel locking device would not unlock. Nothing we tried worked. Had my car towed to dealership to find out that this is a major issue with other owners. No recall on this safety issue at this time. Nissan gave an extended warranty instead but did not make all owners aware. I was never notified of this issue. Dealership repaired the device and I have a bill for $906. 00 that is not covered under warranty because it expired June 2015.

51 Steering problem

Failure Date: 11/21/2015

Takata recall this whole steering lock situation is an absolute outrage. Apparently Nissan does not feel they are responsible for paying or replacing this defect. I know they've lost my business. I feel as well as many others this should be a recall. I am not the only person who has complained or had this problem. It is hundreds of dollars to fix and after reading there are tons of cases identical to mine. I had to leave my car unattended at our local jcpenney's for two days and two nights because the vehicle completely locked up.

52 Steering problem

Failure Date: 11/14/2015

Unable to start car due to streering is locked. No power to turn on any accessories.

53 Steering problem

Failure Date: 10/24/2015

I have not had the car long enough to pay the taxes and the steering locks. Warranty will not cover this is a mess over $1100 to repair. I was going to get my aunt picture copied for her wedding she is deceased. I didn't get the picture and I missed the wedding waiting on the tow truck. Really 😡 upset with Nissan I don't think I will be buying another one ever. Many people has had this issue yet Nissan will not fix this issue. Very dissatisfied customer.

54 Steering problem

Failure Date: 09/29/2015

I got in my car tried turning it on and it would not turn over at all. I knew it wasn't the battery because all lights were on and fob still worked. When I put the actual key in slot it gave the missing key light. I had to have it towed to Nissan where they told me it would be 1100 to fix the steering wheel lock. After researching online I saw a lot of the same complaints, and that Nissan had issued an extended warranty. After calling Nissan consumer affairs they informed me that my warranty had expired 4 months ago but that they would escalate to see if they would cover a portion. After being strung for three days, they decided that they would not cover any of the cost. They also informed me prior that normal protocol was for consumer affairs to call the dealership where the car was which they never did for, I just got an automatic no!.

55 Steering problem

Failure Date: 09/01/2015

2009 Nissan Maxima. Consumer writes in regards to vehicle steering wheel lock malfunction.

56 Steering problem

Failure Date: 08/20/2015

Daughter drove car home from school. Went to leave a couple hours later for volleyball practice and the car was completely frozen. We could not depress the gas pedal and there were 2 lights on the dashboard that kept flashing. One was red and had a key symbol in it and the other was orange and said the word key in it. The car was stuck in the garage, could not even move it into neutral to be towed, had to get the towing guy to go get another mechanic to use a screwdriver to release a mechanism that would allow them to put the car in neutral so they would not have to "drag" it out of the garage. Ended up being the steering lock with a cost for parts of $684. 87 - total cost with labor $964. 76. We were informed that this particular part had an extended warranty put on it that was good through may of 2015. Didn't matter the mileage on the car, apparently it was only a time issued warranty. So, once may came and went - you paid for your own part. We are curious as to why this was not made a recall verses an extended warranty situation. We are now out $1000 for something that Nissan knows is a problem, yet has not done the proper thing by issuing a full recall for this problem.

57 Steering problem

Failure Date: 07/04/2015

Tires vibrated as if out of balance. Took back to dealer he rebalanced and rotated tires. This did not change vibration. Continued to have vibration and dealer stated he could find nothing wrong with tires. Dealer stated he had never seen a bad tire only bad drivers. These were new tires with less than 3000 miles. I continued to drive withn these tires but finally changed to cooper radials. Have no problem since changing. Feel dealer unjust in evaluation and complaint. Basically tires bounced at interstate speeds. Out of 4 tires one worn drastically while others wore fairly even but all continued to be out of balance. Cost at purchase about $875. 00.

58 Steering problem

Failure Date: 05/15/2015

I attempted to start my car as I left work one afternoon and it would not start. The push start button was in the lock mode and the picture in the dash indicated that my wheel was locked, while my ant-theft light flashed continuously. I made several different attempts for hours to unlock the steering collar myself and start my car, only to fail over and over again which lead to me having it towed to a local Nissan dealership, the next day. The dealership ran a diagnostic test on the car and told me that I needed a new steering lock box, which typically does not go out on cars like mine (2009 Nissan Maxima). This seems to be a manufacture defect but I am being charged at least $1000 to fix this problem, with no fault of my own. Will you assist me in resolving this problem?.

59 Steering problem

Failure Date: 04/02/2015

Car does not start. Difficult time getting into the car while using my key fob. When I push the ignition button there is no nose and no lights. Tried jumping the car for 15 minutes with no success. I was told by the Nissan dealership mechanic that it is the steering lock system. This is going to cost me for towing and labor and parts. Money I do not have. Reading up on this problem tells me that there should have been a recall.

60 Steering problem

Failure Date: 03/10/2015

Tl- the contact owns a 2009 Nissan Maxima. The contact stated that the security warning light kept randomly coming on and causing the vehicle not to start. The contact was unable to access the vehicle due to the security lock feature to turn the key and start the vehicle. The contact had to tow the vehicle numerous times each time the vehicle was unable to be accessed to start the vehicle. The vehicle was taken to a dealer who diagnosed that the steering lock control unit needed to be replaced. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 84,000. Dyd.

Went to store this morning to get coffee, got back in car and it would not start. Indicators suggest no key and one suggest key in car. Cost me $75 to have it towed and just found out it will cost $1,000 for repairs. Very upset and would like Nissan to make this a recall.

63 Steering problem

Failure Date: 01/16/2015

2009 Nissan Maxima, purchased new--key fob light indicator illuminated on dashboard, car won't start, brake lights work, key fob unlocks doors and trunk. Warranty expired about 1k miles ago. I was told that the steering lock part, which may repair/solve the matter is about $1200. I am repulsed and utterly disgusted. Prior to this matter, the tilt feature [for steering wheel) on the car ceased to work.

64 Steering problem

Failure Date: 11/30/2014

Today I got stranded, my 2009 Nissan Maxima wouldn't start due to my steering wheel being locked and wouldn't unlock. Tried everything the manuel stated and nothing worked. Now I have to take it to the dealer where I'm going to get charged a lot of money for someting that the dealer should pay for. I did some research and found out that Nissan is aware of this malfunction but does not place a recall on it. My car isn't even payed off yet and I'm having an issue with it. I don't understand? I bought my car brand new in 2009 and is well maintained with low miles. Nissan should put a recall on this problem, it can be dangerous.

65 Steering problem

Failure Date: 11/02/2014

66 Steering problem

Failure Date: 10/14/2014

Went to turn the car on and the breaks were stiff and the steering wheel didn't want to turn. Apparently my steering wheel locked for no reason. This has been a big problem with the Nissan max. And they refuse to have a recall and expect me to pay for it out of pocket.

67 Steering problem

Failure Date: 09/15/2014

Tilt motor and telescoping motor ceased to work. Grinding sound when using the 4 way rocker switch to telescope or tilt the steering wheel.

68 Steering problem

Failure Date: 08/01/2014

In August of 2014 I got in my car, 2009 Nissan Maxima, started it. Memory is set for my drivers seat. Seat set as normal. Steering/tilt did not move as it is set to my position. Did not move in, out, up nor down tried to set it, did not work manually either. Took my car to dealer, they said the motor has gone out in steer/tilt and it will cost close to $500. 00 to get fixed.

69 Steering problem

Failure Date: 07/25/2014

Tilt and telescopic motors both failed locking the steering wheel in an awkward and uncomfortable position for driving. Motors continue to try and run thus depleting the battery of energy while the car's engine is off.

70 Steering problem

Failure Date: 07/14/2014

There was an open recall on the the struts I purchased the care from alantic Nissan September 2009. I took the care to get checked out and was told that the origanal struts were on the care yet alantic Nissan said that they proformed the recall December 2009. My spouse and I did not take the care to get this done because we were not aware never told that there was a recall. The campaign #09v358000. I only found this out because at service in Nissan 112 I was told. I was told the Nissan is not required to tell consmers about recall NHTSA is requirded to do so. If so was I not informed that the tranmisson coverage was changed to 120,000 the steering was recalled and motors in the seat.
