1 Steering Column problem

Failure Date: 08/23/2019

Tl the contact owns a 2010 Nissan Maxima. The contact stated that the vehicle would not start because the steering column would lock up. Also, the key indicator illuminated and the contact had to take off the paneling and tap the steering column box to get the steering column to unlock for the vehicle to start. The manufacturer stated that there were no recalls on the vehicle. The steering column was replaced by the previous owner and the dealer had not been contacted. The failure mileage was 173,247.

2 Steering Column problem

Failure Date: 08/19/2016

The steering column lock module broke. The car would not start or drive. I had driven it to a home. Stopped the vehicle, turned it off. When I got back in, it did not work at all. The car would not recognize my intelligent key. Pushing the start button did nothing. It did not even light up.

3 Steering Column problem

Failure Date: 12/14/2015

Unexpectedly, after driving one kid to school this morning, vehicle (stationary) would not start to drive my other kid to middle school. The electronic steering column lock (escl) unit that locks the steering wheel when the vehicle is parked and the ignition is turned off to help prevent theft prevents the vehicle from recognizing my key (fob), no regular key is issued, just button start. In my vehicle the escl may malfunction after the vehicle is locked and could prevent the engine from starting. Still waiting to hear the dreadful call from the dealer (have to be towed and I am not even done making payments for my 2010 Maxima) to see what the damage will be or if covered under an extended warranty. Not because the vehicle is in park, means it is not a safety issue. If you are stranded with a non reliable car, it is a safety issue, it can be in the middle of the mountains or the middle of a desert, no way to start a car if no mechanic key is issued and the only option, the fob, is not recognized by your own car.

4 Steering Column problem

Failure Date: 02/24/2015

On Feb 24, 2015, I got into my 2010 Nissan Maxima to take son to school and car would not start. After doing a host of troubleshooting (battery, fuses) nothing turned up. Had it towed to the dealership and diagnostic test determined the electronic steering column was defective. I did some research on this issue and discovered millions of consumer complaints about this issue. Nissan was well aware of problem and recalled the 2009 Nissan Maxima models , and extended the recall warranty til Feb 2015 to fix issue. However, they did nothing for the 2010 models. When you purchase a car, you are robbed at the dealership and robbed again of your hard earned minimum wage income due to shoddy workmanship that cost thousands. Lesson learned never buy a Nissan Maxima.

5 Steering Column problem

Failure Date: 02/18/2015

I went to start my 2010 Maxima and it wouldn't start. I thought it was the battery, so I changed it. No difference. Then I saw that the key indicator was lit on my dashboard. So I checked my key fob, it was fine. Then I began to google the issue and saw that there was a recall on the 2009 altima/maxima's on the electronic steering column lock (escl). I read that owners of Maxima's would remove the bottom dashboard and jiggle or tap the escl and the car would eventually start. I tried this remedy, and it worked. . . Temporarily. The light went off but the very next day it came back on. I was hesitant to start my car after the incident. The car started but the light stayed on. I assumed that there was an electrical issue, but since the car started I went on about my daily routine. Then it happened, I was away from my home, on a date, in the snow, and it wouldn't start again. There I was trying to start my car without tools in the snow!! there are countless complaints about this issue on the internet. Many have gone unresolved, and there are many unsatisfied Nissan owners out there. I love my Maxima, but I am very unsatisfied with Nissan and how they have handled this issue. Especially since they admitted fault with the 2009 model, yet new models still have the same issue. I contacted Nissanassist. Com and filed a complaint and was told that they we're sorry but that they would not assist me.

6 Steering Column problem

Failure Date: 02/04/2015

My car would not start was able to open the doors to the car but could not start the car. Car was towed to Nissan service station was told the steering lock had to be replaced for internal failure and it was no longer under warranty. $899. 67 dollars later and as I'm leaving the service station I'm told my warranty was up by a few days and also Nissan had extended the warranty for 2009 models but not 2010 models this is a copy taken from Nissanassist. Com released in 2013 (q1. What is the reason for warranty extension? a. To ensure customer satisfaction. Model year 2009 altima and Maxima vehicles are equipped with an electronic steering column lock (escl) unit that locks the steering wheel when the vehicle is parked and the ignition is turned off to help prevent theft. Nissan has determined that on a small number of vehicles, due to a manufacturing irregularity that has since been corrected, the escl may malfunction after the steering column is locked and could prevent the engine from starting. What will be the corrective action? a. Nissan will extend its new vehicle limited warranty coverage for the affected part numbers from its original duration of 36 months/ 36,000 miles to 72 months/unlimited miles ) I investigated on line and there are many complaints by owners with 2010 models that have this same problem Nissan admits to a manufacture problem how can they not be responsible for replacing it free of charge for all 2010 with the same problem.

7 Steering Column problem

Failure Date: 01/23/2015

After driving my vehicle to the post office and parking I proceeded to restart my vehicle and exit the lot. The steering column locked and the car would not start. The model of my car is push start with no other alternate option. I was forced to have my car repaired by the dealer totaling over $1100. 00 and no assistance from the manufacture who has had numerous issues in the past for the same mechanical error. My vehicle is a 2010 Maxima and Nissan has so far only issued a warranty extension for 2009 editions which had the same error.

8 Steering Column problem

Failure Date: 01/05/2015

I tried to start my car this morning but the car would not start. There was yellow light that said key and when I tried to depress the break nothing happened. There was an extended warranty for the 2009 Maximas for the same exact issue that I have - its due to the stearing column locking. No extended warranty was given for the 2010's which is wrong because clearly there still a problem with the steering column that was not fixed for the 2010 models but Nissan stated that is was infact fixed and no warranty/discount/etc will be given for the 2010s. I will have to pay over $1000 for faulty design due to Nissan. Never buying another Nissan again!.

9 Steering Column problem

Failure Date: 12/24/2014

Electronic steering column lock - (escl) failed. Car will not start. Key fob is operational. Known issue with 2009-2010 Nissans. Units are defective, Nissan not willing to take responsibility for 2010 parts. Failure will happen instantly, and will leave you stranded anytime anyplace. Vehicle has to be towed to dealership for repair. Repair cost is >$1,000. 00.

10 Steering Column problem

Failure Date: 11/21/2014

I own a 2010 Nissan Maxima on November 21, 2014 after leaving work. I notice a yellow indicator light on my dashboard. Initially I thought my key fob had a weak battery, so I called my brother to pick up my extra valet key. However that did not work, I was eventually towed to the Nissan dealership where my car was diagnose for a failure in the electronic steering column lock (escl), as a result of consistently trying to start the car my battery failed too. Consequently, I had to pay for the escl part and a new battery, I was out of pocket $1286. 00 due to the warranty do not cover the escl part in 2010 Nissan Maxima’s. I contacted Nissan north America consumer affairs and was denied a reimbursement due to being out of the warranty protection 36 months/36,000 miles. After further research I see this is an ongoing issue with several consumers. I will be doing my due diligence to ensure that this matter is more than just identify by Nissan but that a reimbursement plus extended warranty is awarded to all 2010 Nissan Maxima’s owners that can provide proof of this matter.

11 Steering Column problem

Failure Date: 11/19/2014

After getting back into my car after dinner, my car would not start. The steering wheel moves, but the brake pedal was locked. The push ignition switch would only go in the "lock" position. The "key" icon was lit up on the left side of the dash. Putting the fob key into the slot (the back up way of starting the car) also did not work. From what I read on line, many 2009-2010 Nissan models have had this problem, which has been attributed to a steering column lock mechanism that doesn't disengage. I imagine this will cost me about 700-1000$ to fix, not to mention the cost to tow the vehicle to the Nissan dealership.

12 Steering Column problem

Failure Date: 11/19/2014

Tl-the contact owns a 2010 Nissan Maxima. The contact stated that when starting the vehicle there was unknown warning light and the steering wheel became seized. The vehicle was towed to the dealer who diagnosed that the steering column lock needed to be replaced. The vehicle had not been repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 38,000. Ne.

13 Steering Column problem

Failure Date: 11/16/2014

My 2010 Maxima had a defective electronic steering column lock which prevented me from starting the vehicle and I had to tow it to the dealership. I was stranded on a major thoroughfare in cold weather with no heat for several hours as a result. The steering lock was replaced by a local dealership at a cost of $1000+. The 2009 Nissan Maxima model had the same exact problem. Nissan currently has a campaign to address the issue on the 2009 Nissan Maxima but refused to address the issue on my 2010 model after I've called them and submitted a case with Nissan consumer affairs. I've informed Nissan that this problem is also happening on a lot of 2010 models as per the 100+ complaints on the NHTSA website and various other internet blogs but nevertheless after a week of reviewing my case, Nissan refused to address the repair nor extend the existing campaign to the 2010 Maxima model.

14 Steering Column problem

Failure Date: 10/19/2014

I drove my 2010 Nissan max to church. . . The vehicle was working perfectly and we had just recently had it serviced. When I got in vehicle to leave church the vehicle would not start. The key fob would lock and unlock the door but nothing else would come on. There was a light on the dash showing a key but nothing else worked. I had the vehicle towed to the Nissan dealership the next day and was informed the electrical steering column lock switch was not working and needed to be replaced. Repair would cost $1100. I was informed no recalls for 2010 but 2009 altima and Maxima had same issues and recall was done for that year only. I am so upset and disappointed with Nissan especially after reading all the other complaints as well. We have always owned Nissans but I am totally reconsidering my next vehicle purchase.

15 Steering Column problem

Failure Date: 09/13/2014

I went to the store to buy some groceries before work. When I returned to car my intelligent key wouldn't work. I was stranded in the parking lot. I had my 2010 Nissan Maxima towed to the nearest Nissan dealership. They told me that the electrical steering wheel column lock failed. It cost me $876. 00 to get it replaced. I contacted Nissan customer service. I told them that my car was built in sept 09 and it should have been under the recall of the 2009 altima. The recall was for the same problem. Faulty electrical steering wheel column lock. They research my vehicle and couldn't find any open recalls for my model year.

16 Steering Column problem

Failure Date: 08/17/2014

The contact owns a 2010 Nissan Maxima. The contact stated that the vehicle failed to start and the steering wheel was loose without the key in the ignition. The vehicle was towed to the contact's residence. The contact discovered that the escl steering column lock needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 60,000.

17 Steering Column problem

Failure Date: 06/02/2014

The steering column can be adjusted to a user's preferred position. I have experienced a gradual "falling" of the steering column position. I can readjust using the electronic adjustment lever, however it will again "fall" in position, blocking the view of the speedometer gauge. The change is so gradual that it is not noticed until it blocks the speedometer, which if that occurred at the wrong time, could cause a driver to inadvertently travel at an unsafe speed, and lead to an accident.

18 Steering Column problem

Failure Date: 02/18/2014

My steering column went out with the car having 62,000 miles there is a recall on the 2009 but not the 2010. To fix this issue it was 900. 00 and Nissan refused to provide any assistance and its a known issue with their cars. I was very disappointed the car just stopped working out of no where and was completely locked up.

19 Steering Column problem

Failure Date: 02/08/2014

Same as everyone else with the electronic steering column lock malfunctioning on a 3 and 1/2 year old car. This is absolutely ridiculous that a part that should last the life of the car fails so often and even more ridiculous that Nissan is not extending the warranty or recalling it for the 2010 models. Not to mention that the part is on back-order and who knows how long I am going to have to come out of packet for a rental and OH by the way waiting to pay $1300 plus to get this fixed. This is so upsetting. . . Nissan should stand by their products and recognize the fact that their design for that part obviously did not work. Nissan should also do right by their customers and take care of this issue.

20 Steering Column problem

Failure Date: 02/05/2014

I have a 2010 Nissan Maxima sv and all was well until one morning I dropped off my son at school on a frigid 5 degree morning and tried to restart the car. The push start wouldn't work and I was forced to call a tow truck to take the car to the dealer. After evaluation, the part is the steering column lock which was defective. The same part that in the 2009 Maxima and early 2010 was defective and provided extended repair warranty by Nissan. It only got worse, Nissan's replacement part for this has been on a national backorder since last month. After having to rent a car, pay for a tow, and now I wait endlessly for a part to fix a car that cant even be started, I was told by Nissan that the part will not be covered for my car under the extended warranty. I was called each each to update me on the potential ship date of the part, only the next week to be called again to tell me it maybe another few weeks. This is shame on Nissan, at least Toyota and Honda will recall and fix a known problem. How could this not be a safety issue when the your car can leave you stranded in dangerous temperatures without any prior notice.

21 Steering Column problem

Failure Date: 02/04/2014

Went to work park the car with no problems, came out of work car would not start. Thought it was the batteries in the remote due to the yellow light with the intelligent key on the dash, and then remember I just replaced the battery. The doors would unlock and lock with no problems, the brake petal would not go in. Then thought it was the battery hood up a charger and it read it was on 70% charged, called the dealer they told me to have it towed in. The dealer called me the next day and told me it was the steering column, when I asked them why would it do this the only answer they had for me was this has been a problem with this year make and model. With the towing and the diagnostic check and the part with labor it's costing me over 1,000 dollars, the standard warranty does not cover any of this, all out of pocket. I just got rid of a 2008 gl 450 Mercedes Benz, because of having problems with it, I have a 4 year old visually disabled child that I am constantly traveling long distances to medical appointments so this is absolutely unacceptable to me. I always have loved Nissan and this is my 4th Nissan and was planning on purchasing a pathfinder in the falltime. When I purchased this car I stood by the dependability of the name, and I'm very disappointed.

22 Steering Column problem

Failure Date: 02/02/2014

Electronic steering column lock malfunctioned on me, this is a issue for the 2009 Maxima (recall) which the 2010 also has same part and same malfunction and still does not have recall,I paid over a $1000 for this part which I really cant afford.

23 Steering Column problem

Failure Date: 01/22/2014

The vehicle would not start or move due to the malfunctioned electronics steering column lock control assembly. Car had to be towed to the dealer. The part was on back-order due to the fact that many Nissan 2009 and 2010 models having this same exact issue. Had to wait for five days to get it repaired, and no loaner car was provided. The repair cost was over $800. The vehicle is less than three years old and has only 45000 miles on it. This seems to be a known issue with many altimas, Maximas, and 370zs. . . Nissan is aware of the issue but extended warranty on electronic steering column lock (escl) only for 2009 altimas and Maximas. This is definitely a design flow on the part of Nissan and as such should be covered by extended warranty or recall for 2010 models as well.

24 Steering Column problem

Failure Date: 11/01/2013

What we are experiencing with our 2010 Nissan Maxima very closely aligns with the symptoms of the recall campaign issued in September 2009 for the 2010 Maxima. Nissan has been notified, however, they insist that my VIN number is not a part of this former campaign. I struggle to believe this as it's just too ironic that everything aligns with the former. We experience 3 problems with the suspension and steering. 1. ) at minimal speed mainly at initial acceleration, when turning slowly, and when braking at slow speeds you feel a jolt in the steering column and can hear a thud or clunk in the front passenger side. 2. ) when the car reaches approximately 60 mph, the steering column bounces erratically and 3. ) both at low speeds and high speeds the car pulls/veers to the right. This issue has been going on since I purchased the vehicle in 2013 and continues to occur. I have brought the car into a Nissan-authorized dealer and they say nothing is wrong. I have brought the car into the Hyundai-authorized dealer where I bought the car from and they say nothing is wrong. I have brought the car to 4 additional, independent mechanics/technicians and they also cannot get to the "root" of the problem without having the car for an unrealistic amount of time for diagnosis. I have already had to purchase a lifetime alignment and balancing package from a local repair shop as well as I had purchased new wheels and tires thinking that was the issue. Regardless of what I do or where I take it, the issues continue. I am very concerned and cannot drive at ease knowling there is something wrong with the steering and suspension. I also have a 4 year old child whose safety I am concerned with when she drives in our Maxima with us. Nissan didn't seem to care about my concerns, they simply told me my VIN doesn't align with the former campaign and then sent me on my way. Someone, anyone, please help.

25 Steering Column problem

Failure Date: 10/17/2013

I was at the store went in came out car wouldn't start had to call tow truck Nissan said steering column was locked and if part is not covered under warranty the part will cost $800 I haven't had this car six months . This is a Maxima 2010.
