Alternator/generator/regulator Problems of Nissan Maxima - part 2

Engine was repaired 1 1/2 months ago. Went out of town for thanksgiving weekend when the alternator failed in birmingham, ala. ,which left me stranded!I'm back in kenner but my Maxima remains in alabama still waiting for another alternator? plus I'm still waiting for the skyview roof to be replaced!!.

While driving 30 mph, the vehicle stalled. The consumer tried to restart the vehicle but was unsuccessful. The vehicle was towed to the dealer for inspection. The mechanic informed the consumer that the alternator needed to be replaced. Please provide further details.

Vehicle caught on fire. Recall 02v171000 was issued. Consumer was told that his vehicle was not included in the recall due to VIN. When the consumer started the vehicle he noticed smoke coming from the engine compartment. As the hood was opened fire was seen burning inside the alternator. After testing the alternator results confirmed that the malfuntion to be identical with the basis of the recall campaign. The dealer replaced the faultyalternator with a new one.

Nhtsa recall campaign 02v171000 concerning the alternator. A few months after having the alternator replaced the problem recurred, and the alternator was replaced again.

Recall 02v171000 concerning alternator. While starting the vehicle consumer noticed a grinding noise and a odor of something burning. Consumer contacted the dealer concerning this recall. Dealer informed consumer that this vehicle was not covered under the recall due to VIN.

1998 Nissan Maxima , VIN # jn1ca21d9wm928319 . I check the recall VIN # on this vehicle and it was not in the range of #'s. But my alternator started on fire in my driveway when I started it up that night. It did everything the recall stated it would. I am calling the dealer tomorrow to see if its covered.

Approx 1 mo ago my battery and brake light would light intermittently with no mechanical effect noted. The battery and alternator tested good and the cause was unknown. Then one day on the highway with cruise control at 75 mph the lights came on. Several minutes later the cruise control shut off by itself and the abs light came on and the airbag light began flashing. During slowing to exit the the highway all the instrument panels began 'bouncing' with unstable readings and the engine seemed as if it was going to die. I exited to the shoulder of the highway and put the car in park and turned the car off. The car required a jump to restart it. I replaced the battery since one cell was partially bad. Nonetheless, the battery and brake light have come on again. Nissan indicates a new alternator is required on the car at 3 years old and 45,700 miles.

Alternator has failed, burning smell from under hood. Vehicle has missed recall by 16 days.

Odi case number: 10095661 same complaint. Started the car and drive to a destination. Tried to restart car and it will not start. First occurrence on 07/08/03 at 11,488 miles. We jump started the car and took it to hill Nissan winter haven florida. They couldn't find anything wrong. Told us to have vehicle towed so they could check with computer if happened again. The second occurrence was on 08/19/02 at 11,567 miles. Vehicle was towed and the original battery, it had a faulty cell and battery was replaced. Third occurrence 05/03/04 and 17,673 miles. We charged battery, and took to dealership. Couldn't find anything wrong. Fourth occurrence 05/27/04 and 21,488 miles. At this time we expressed our concern alternator problem. We were promised by the service advisor that based on the intermittent nature of the problem they would test the car all day, and they would contact the manufacturer as well. This did not happen. Again they could not find nothing wrong. When we picked up the car, we asked to have the alternator bench tested, but they refused. We offered to pay for a bench test, and if found faulty, they would replace under warranty. This was also declined, stating they could not do that because they couldn't find anything wrong. At this time we expressed our concern as to the warranty expiration. Fifth occurrence was on 11/02/04 and 22,558 miles. Vehicle was towed and again a faulty cell in the battery was noted. Sixth occurrence 4/19/05 and 23,298 miles. Vehicle towed. Again, dealership states faulty battery. This was the fourth battery.

97 Nissan Maxima - I got the alternator recall and took it into a Nissan dealtership. After they fixed it they told me that they had taken out a "bolt" off a certain part, and they could not put it back on, and that my car would make noises it I didn't pay to get that part fixed. Now for 2 years my car makes a screaching noise when I turn it on for about 45 sec - which wakes up the whole neighborhood. The reason I am filing this is becuase, before the recall the car was fine. I did some research on the internet, and it seems that many people have had the same noise, so I feel as if it is almost an epidemic amongst Nissan's, Maximas specifically. Please advise.

The alternator burned out twice.

Car initially had trouble starting. The car later would not start at all; towed to serice dealer. I also noticed a problem with the front right suspension. It is making a noise with each bump in the road or when a left turn in made.

Fog lights, belts, trunk release, alternator, electrical wiring, and battery. The consumer had to have new fog light installed because the old ones had brown moisture in the light. The trunk release stopped working and as a result the trunk could only be opened with the key. The vehicle's alternator was replaced. The vehicle also had electrical wiring problems. After the repairs were made the consumer received a recall notice regarding the alternator. The vehicle was taken to the dealer who replaced the alternator again but refused to replace the electrical wiring.

While making a left turn vehicle cut off and started to smoke from under the hood. Vehicle towed to the dealer, and had alternator replaced. Feel free to provide any further information.

Vehicle stalled and started smoking in a busy intersection while making a turn. Engine failed with no dasbboard warning lights. Vehicle was diagnosed for a loose wire in alternator which could have caused an electrical fire to vehicle. Consumer just received NHTSA recall 02-v-171-000/ manufacturer's recall for the same problem that occurred.

A clicking noise was coming from front of vehicle that was getting louder and louder. Engine light illuminated and engine shut off. Took vehicle to dealer who stated it was the alternater, not to use rear defogger because it may result in a vehicle fire, also dealer told consumer not to fix it because there was going to be a recall.

Prior to recall notification, consumer states the alternator failed on the vehicle, and is now requesting a refund.

At 30mph vehicle shuts off. This could have caused an accident. Cause unknown. Dealer notified. Consumer stated problem was due to the alternator.

Pe-02-034; vehicle was driven 30 minutes before turned off and parked. Consumer was notified that vehicle was on fire. Smoke came from beneath the hood, and flames blazed when hood was opened. Vehicle was not totaled. Dealer replaced alternator due to it going bad. Please provide more information.

Alternator not charging-after starting car in shop-alternator caught fire. Second 1997 Maxima we have witness with this condition-will send fill out seperate form on other car also.

I own 2 of the sames cars make year and model and the same thing hqappened 2 both cars but one of them was really serious it caught on fire as I was driving I dont know what to do I think there shouldve been a recall or something please help thnk you. No safety defect.

Alternator just caught on fire, mechanic does not know why. There was no warning, I drove from the 6th floor to the 3rd floor of the parking garage shut off the engine, smelled smoke lifted up the hood noticed the orange and red flames. Had the car towed to concord Nissan was told that the alternator had caught fire & burned the wiring harness and fan belt. According to the service manager at Nissan there is no known cause for this incident.

Smelled smoke immediatly after starting car turned car off,investigated and saw 3inch flame emitting from alternator no work ever done with alternator in any way shape or form contacted manu. Unresolved as of this time complete failure resulted immediatly.

Fax ltr fm georgia chester (CA) request re-start of a 2002 recall on the 1997 Nissan Maxima, her Maxima caught on fire, reply attn maria cobian/oxnard, a district office, ES have no rec of previous corr. Fm ms. Chester. The consumer er's vehicle was not covered under recall 02v-171 because it was produced prior to February 13, 1997, when Nissan began to use the defective alternators.

While driving at normal speed vehicle shut off without warning. Took vehicleto a mechanic, and they said that alternator needed replacement.

Vehicle wasn't part of the recall regarding the suspension due to the VIN, but experienced the problem stated on the recall. The vehicle had to get a realignment, the bottom cover was loose and the vehicle constantly pulled to the right/left and there was an alternator problem where the battery did not charge. The consumer requested assistance with getting the vehicle fully checked since the problems encountered occurred during the warranty period. Recall#02v146000.
