7 Steering problem

Failure Date: 10/01/2014

The tilt steering motor has stopped working. The in and out motor went out shortly after we purchased this pre-owned vehicle in 2012. Then, a few weeks ago, the tilt mechanism spontaneously tilted to the farthest down position possible. We then had to hold the control up as well as apply significant pressure upwards to get the steering wheel to return to the desired position. Luckily, we were not driving at the time of this incident, however I have read in some discussion threads regarding this issue that some drivers have experienced this issue while driving. Now the tilt mechanism does not work all together (in, out, up or down). We took the vehicle to our nearest Nissan dealer, and they said there is no recall for this issue, and it is not covered under our warranty. I contacted Nissan of north America and they have stated that there is nothing they can do to help us at this time. There are several discussion threads on the internet regarding this issue for the 2009 Nissan murrano. It is only a matter of time before this causes an accident with a potential injury or worse. Nissan needs to address this issue before it gets to this point.

11 Steering problem

Failure Date: 10/01/2013

Takata recall . . . . My passenger airbag light has been on for about 3 yrs. Now and when it has been hooked up to a computer results always come back the same. . . Error in airbag. Now I've contacted Nissan and they are telling me that even though I may have a takata airbag my VIN # is not on the recall list so therefore they cannot do anything about the problem. I would have to pay out of my own pocket to have it fixed. Now they did tell me that according to their records and with the VIN # that was given to them in oct 2008 my Murano already had been serviced for passenger side airbag light staying on. So basically what they were saying was that my Murano had already used the one free service check in oct 2008 for airbag. First of all, my vehicle is an 09, so Nissan already admitted that according to their records and my VIN # that I was already having airbag issues before the vehicle was released to be sold. I purchased it at beginning of 2012 and 2013 is when my airbag light came on. Now I have had it cleared and seems like if it is cold cause I do live in ohio, but if I clear it today and it's not really cold it may not come on, but as soon as it gets cold it comes right back on. Now there has been times where it has been cleared and as soon as you turn off the engine and start it back up it comes right back on. I also am having issues with tpms, no matter what tires I buy I am constantly battling the low tire pressure light. It's been taking to tire shops and been checked for slow leaks and leaks around the valve stem, nothing. I have also had to replace the motors in mt steering wheel because both of those went out on me. Now my new issue is my air vents. When the defrost is on certain air vents do not shut off, air still comes through them. And in the winter I feel like there is cold air blowing up through the floor. No issues with 04 Murano.

12 Steering problem

Failure Date: 09/12/2013

Upon exiting my driveway the steering wheel tilt/telescopic mechanism began to grind and the steering wheel ratcheted lower & lower onto my legs. Presenting a difficult driving position and making ingress & egress to & from the vehicle difficult. I am aware of a service bulletin on this problem from Nissan ntb-09-073.

13 Steering problem

Failure Date: 12/14/2012

The tilt and telescoping steering wheel adjustment stopped working. Motors runs, but there is just a grinding sound. Wheel set itself to the lowest position pinning my legs to the seat.

14 Steering problem

Failure Date: 12/01/2012

The steering wheel motors to move wheel up, down and in, out are broken and steering wheel stuck in up position making the car difficult to drive. Took vehicle to dealer. They want $933 to replace these known defective motors. The warranty they provide for the replacement is for 12 months or 4000 miles. Nissan must not have much faith in these motors.

15 Steering problem

Failure Date: 03/13/2012

The contact owns a 2009 Nissan Murano. The contact stated while attempting to adjust the steering wheel, it became stuck in the up position and could not be lowered. Since the contact was unable to lower the steering wheel it was difficult to drive the vehicle. The vehicle was taken to the dealer who stated the tilt motor for the steering wheel was defective. The failure mileage was 65,000 and the current mileage was 70,000.

16 Steering problem

Failure Date: 08/02/2011

On Tuesday, August 2, 2011, I was driving on a major expressway. While trying to exit from the expressway, the steering wheel on my 2009 Nissan Murano locked, making it impossible for me to turn it. I was almost hit by an 18-wheel semi-trailer truck. The incident resulted in black skid/tire marks on the side of the road by my car and the truck that was trying to avoid from hitting me. Nissan's contracted towing service had to tow my vehicle into Nissan's shop since the vehicle could not be driven safely after the incident. On August 3, the service advisor called to say that the problem with the steering wheel had been fixed. He indicated that the steering wheel would not turn because of a faulty serpentine belt. He said the serpentine belt was replaced, that they had test drove the vehicle before its release to me, and that the vehicle was now safe to drive. It should be noted that my Nissan had previously been in Nissan's shop barely a week before the August 2nd incident, on July 21st, for other defect issues which were covered by warranty. When the car was in the shop for the July repairs, the service representatives had indicated that they had done a full inspection of the vehicle. What is interesting to me is that during the full inspection, Nissan did not discover anything wrong with the serpentine belt then. If the belt were wearing away, Nissan should have been able to discover and disclose the wear and tear during the full inspection in late July. Even after the serpentine belt was replaced on August 3, 2011, the steering wheel is still difficult to steer. I'm not sure whether this is a manufacturing/design defect, but I think this should be looked into carefully since this is obviously a serious safety issue. If a driver is slowing down to get ready to turn but suddenly cannot turn because of a problem with the steering wheel, another vehicle traveling behind could easily hit the driver in front. This could result in a tragic accident.

17 Steering problem

Failure Date: 01/30/2008

The contact owns a 2009 Nissan Murano. Immediately after purchasing the vehicle, the contact noticed that it vibrated while driving 40-50 mph. The dealer changed the tires three times, but the failure continues. The failure mileage was 30 and current mileage was 250. Updated 03/18/08. The consumer stated all 4 tires had the tire pressure of 41psi in each of tires and were reduced to 36psi and no longer vibrates. Updated 03/18/08.
