I just want to add a report of (so-called) sudden acceleration syndrome that occurred to me on thanksgiving day of November 2007 then again within a month or two after the Nissan dealer said it was due to a badly positioned floor mat. The second time it happened, the dealer said it was a "dirty throttle" that required $75 "throttle service," -- a cleaning -- to which I readily consented. The acceleration problem hasn't reoccurred (knock on wood). In both instances, the car sped forward when my foot was off the brake so quickly I barely had time to react. Fortunately, I did not have an accident or cause one. I drive a 2004 Nissan Sentra, which I maintain regularly. The Nissan manual states that throttle service should be regularly performed (something I had never heard of before) but not that neglecting to do so could cause the car to accelerate suddenly. This was not mild acceleration -- the speed increased alarmingly until I put the car in neutral then hit brakes (I instinctively tried braking first, which caused the engine to race) and pulled over to collect myself. This isn't easy with power steering.
