Oldsmobile 88 owners have reported 4 problems related to fuel injection (under the gasoline fuel system category). The most recently reported issues are listed below.
My 1998 olds 88 backfired upon starting and blew up the plastic intake manifold. The force of the explosion destroyed the engine cover and the fuel rail. The engine is the 3800 v6. The vehicle has 21,000 miles but was older than 3yrs, thus it was out of warranty. Because gm would not offer any financial assistance for the repair, I had it repaired myself. The explosion was caused by a leaking fuel pressure regulator that vented back the intake manifold thru a vacuum line. This situation looks to be exactly like a recall on very similar Buick cars. It was NHTSA recall # 03v473000 on Nov 12th 2003. I believe the recall should be extended to cover vehicles like mine.

When the vehicle was started there was a loud bang and smoke emitted from the engine compartment. The consumer opened the hood and noticed that the manifold cracked. Upon further investigation at the dealer it was determined that the fuel pressure regulator leaked causing the injector to blow off the injector. This in turn caused the intake manifold to crack. The dealer replaced the upper intake manifold with gaskets along with the fuel pressure regulator and fuel rails.

The engine stalls while the vehicle is in motion. Has been to dealer 2 times and problem cannot be duplicated. Dealer felt the problem was a combination of a computer problem and fuel injection problem, Oldsmobile took vehicle back.
