13 Equipment problem of the 2002 Oldsmobile Alero

Failure Date: 09/24/2015

I have a 2002 Oldsmobile Alero which throughout the years has not started when you put the key in the ignition and turn. Numerous times I've had my car towed to a mechanic only to have it start once it gets dropped off. . . Hence they were never able to diagnose the issue. On September 24, 2015 again my car just didn't start. Lights, blinkers, horn all worked but it would not turn on. Finally had a mechanic come to my house and do a diagnostic which read security system lockdown. I went online and this apparently is an ongoing issue with this particular make and model. Hundreds of complaint are listed with the exact problem. Oldsmobile refuses to do a recall. I am a senior citizen on a fixed income. To fix this issue my mechanic wants $650. 00. I feel because this has been an issue that has been reported repeatedly with thousands of complaints Oldsmobile should be responsible to reimburse me.

16 Equipment problem of the 2004 Oldsmobile Alero

Failure Date: 02/06/2015

1g3nl52e74c168452: after a day of light driving after being stationary for about an hour and a half in colorado springs CO (cool weather) upon starting the vehicle the temp needle went from cool to almost overheated in the under 30 mins it took to go from one store parking lot to the next nearby one. The vehicle became fully overheated & sparks / 1' flames emerged from the sides of the front hood. Upon being shut off the flames receded, after approx 30mins sitting the hood was lifted & fluids checked (all were at appropriate levels). The vehicle was started again & ran idle for 20 mins & the sparks / flames reappeared again so the vehicle was shut down & a ride called. Upon being picked up the next day the vehicle ran fine again for the most part with only slight overheating - it was taken for an engine wash / under hood at an appropriate facility to remove any flammable / combustible residue. Had to be driven at speeds under 50mph to return home without further problems.

17 Equipment problem of the 2002 Oldsmobile Alero

Failure Date: 11/01/2014

I received recall letter from gm for "unintended key rotation". I had previously contacted gm indicating issues with ignition switch; gm then issued "unintended key rotation" letter. I had the recall work performed, yet issue continued. I contacted gm; I was informed my vehicle was not eligible for ignition switch recall as vehicle was "outside of parameters of 10 years or 100,000 miles", "whichever comes first". My vehicle is a 2002 with approx. 95,675 miles. I was informed the dealership "suspected" issue was "worn out ignition switch". Dealership did not perform mechanical diagnostics, only voiced "suspected". Nhtsa investigation needs to be done to determine if these 2002 vehicles contain the same gm ignition part numbers,if so, our vehicles must be included in the gm ignition switch recall. Gm described in their recall what the mechanical issues are in this ignition switch recall, my car has those mechanical problems; yet gm refuses to issue a recall letter for "ignition switch" citing they are not obligated because NHTSA set parameters of "10 years or 100,000 miles, whichever comes first. " to meet the criteria that gm must issue recall letters for ignition switch. If the defective part is the same on these make models and customers are documenting they have this mechanical issue, they must be included in this recall and we must not be held at a financial hardship and be left with driving known unsafe vehicles. To those olds owners that read my complaint, if you have encountered similar issue, it is important that you as well file a complaint so that that database will then include our make/model years and gm and NHTSA will be required to expand their parameters to include our made/model vehicles in this ignition switch recall.

18 Equipment problem of the 1999 Oldsmobile Alero

Failure Date: 09/30/2014

I received a recall notice and have been trying to get the problem corrected. I made an appointment with bob stall Chevrolet here in la mesa, CA. They kept my car for an hour and lied to me and after waiting with no response for an hour, I went to retrieve my car and was told I had to pay $50 to get 3 keys as my keys were not the right ones. I have owned the car for 13 years and have used the keys given to me when I purchased the car. They have always worked and I have never had different keys made. I retrieved my car and keys and came home. Since that time, I have called the customer assistance center twice----both times I was told someone would call me back in less than an hour. I received no call backs. I then tried calling the vehicle safety hotline and was told by two different agents that someone would call me back before the end of business. I have yet to receive a call back. Is there someone out there who can help me? I am a 72 year old widow and hate being forced to drive a car with safety concerns and since I only drive about 50 miles per year, I don't want to be involved in a crash but that remains a possibility since no one seems able to help me. Thank you and I hope to hear from someone soon.

19 Equipment problem of the 2002 Oldsmobile Alero

Failure Date: 07/10/2014

Car would not start in parking lot of a business on Thursday morning. After about an hour it finally started so drove to Cadillac dealership. Was told it's my key and to go home and use my other key. Afraid to be stranded, so did not go anywhere until Sunday. Sunday morning went to and from church fine using the second key, so thought everything was okay. In afternoon, wanted to head out of town, so went to get gas. After filling my car, it would not start again. Tried using both keys, neither would work. Waited for 45-60 minutes, periodically trying, with no luck. Walked home since live nearby. Several hours later, walked to gas station to try my car again. This time it started, so drove home. Not sure what to do at this point. Looked up GMC website and it's saying my car is not on the "recall" list, yet I'm having this problem like everyone else. Also, approximately two months ago, was driving in chicago. Pulled off the freeway to let my dog go to the bathroom and suddenly found my remote keys would not work and I could not get into my car!!! eventually, I was able to get into the passenger side.

20 Equipment problem of the 2002 Oldsmobile Alero

Failure Date: 07/01/2014

Turn signal and hazard lights failure. It started with the turn signals, they would work sometimes and then eventually cut out completely. Hazards worked for a short time after turn signals went out, then both cut out completely. Flasher was replaced and fuses were tested and were not the problem.

21 Equipment problem of the 2004 Oldsmobile Alero

Failure Date: 04/02/2014

I own a 2004 Alero Oldsmobile I purchased the car used in 2008. It later only had one recall which was for the ignition issues. While the car is on and in drive the key is still able to be pulled out of the ignition and the car still remains on and in drive. I am also experiencing my blinkers not working 100% of the time, (NHTSA campaign # for this issue is 03v327000). I can press the hazard light button quickly and frequently while pushing on the signal stick and that sometimes will make them work, other times that doesn't work and neither my signals nor hazard signals work at all. Lastly, and most frightening, in the midst of driving the vehicle has stalled, and will jump as the rpm's bounce back and forth, (NHTSA campaign # for this issue is 07e021000). There had been several times this has happened and a few times the vehicle actually did shut off in the middle of driving, I've had to push the car off the road, and wait 10-15 minutes before I attempt to start the vehicle again. The car was tested for over 3 hours and they found nothing wrong with the engine or battery, which is why I am certain it is the fuel pressure recall. I took the car in for the key recall I brought this up to them as well, (as my windows also do not work), I purchased a new gas cap as instructed hoping that would fix this dangerous situation with the car stalling out, it did not fix the issue. There are recalls that my car falls under and that I am experiencing, I asked why these life threatening recalls weren't able to be fixed on my car, I was told they weren't listed on my VIN. Please help my vehicle and the millions others be updated with the NHTSA to request the manufacturer to review this more closely in relation to the ones actually affected by these issues. These issues are extremely dangerous and pose as a threat not only to myself and family but to other drivers around me.

22 Equipment problem of the 2000 Oldsmobile Alero

Failure Date: 04/01/2014

Car shuts off while driving at all speeds. All power is lost (including steering). Sometimes (while driving on the highway) it turns itself back on after a few seconds - and I keep on driving, sometimes I can shift to neutral and restart and shift back to drive, but usually I have to turn my hazard lights on and mussel the steering wheel off to the shoulder and try to restart it. Then - the 'security' light is on and it won't let me start the car. I've found countless posts online about this problem. I can't believe there isn't a recall. Isn't gm being sued for a very similar problem?.

23 Equipment problem of the 2001 Oldsmobile Alero

Failure Date: 03/29/2013

Car won't start. The car will try to start up, but will not turn over. It's like the gas has been disengaged. Also, the security light comes on. We have had the car towed several times to the mechanic. We have had the fuel injector and fuel pump replaced. Happens frequently now-am concerned it will stall in traffic and be a safety issue. Have started using the 10 min wait/re-start technique I have read about on the internet and it does work, but that is a "band-aid" not a cure.

24 Equipment problem of the 2001 Oldsmobile Alero

Failure Date: 01/09/2013

Dash making clicking noise, sounds lize hazzard warning noise, yet not activating hazzard lights. Very random. Then most rececently, noise seems to have stop and have seen on 3 occasions smoke from the dash area, near where the steering column meets the dash.

25 Equipment problem of the 2004 Oldsmobile Alero

Failure Date: 07/10/2012

Ignition switch issue. Took vehicle in for recall. All they did was stick plastic on keys. What are we suppose to do since the ignition switch is still falling out of place? also, why didn't they replace the ignition module since it is a known defect? the switch is the problem on the vehicle. Not the keys!!!.

26 Equipment problem of the 2003 Oldsmobile Alero

Failure Date: 02/01/2012

I have power windows in my Alero and the clips keep breaking every time I have them replaced!! I have replaced these clips 4 times!!! is there a way to fix the window once & for all so that I can use it? this will not pass nh state inspection without the window working properly!.

27 Equipment problem of the 2003 Oldsmobile Alero

Failure Date: 09/01/2011

This incident occurred for the first time on a rainy day in 2011. I was a new driver at the time. While I was traveling at approximately 45 mph on my way to school, I put on my turn signal to change lanes. There was heavy traffic on the road, and I was going to need someone to let me into the lane. My turn signal, however, malfunctioned and would not illuminate. The resulting lack of communication between myself and the other driver very nearly caused an accident. This problem has persisted intermittently for the last three years. The malfunctioning of the turn signals occurs most often during wet or humid conditions. Only recently did I discover the source of the problem. When I attempt to activate the turn signal and it malfunctions, it can oftentimes be remedied by applying a small amount of pressure to the hazard light button. It was only a few days ago that I encountered an existing recall for earlier models of my car. The hazard light button has been recalled on the previous two model years (2001-2002) of the Oldsmobile Alero. It can not be a coincidence that the same problem is occurring in my vehicle. I looked into getting the button replaced, but the labor costs make replacement an expensive option. I should not have to pay for a systemic defect that egregiously affects the functionality and safety of my vehicle. Please consider extending the recall of the hazard light button to the 2003 model year of the Oldsmobile Alero. Thank you.

28 Equipment problem of the 2004 Oldsmobile Alero

Failure Date: 01/14/2011

As I'm reading different websites and now this site to find a solution as to what's wrong with my car, I see I share the same problem with a lot of other people. . . I too have a 2004 Alero that will crank but not turn over. . . The security light comes on and stays on. . . When I first noticed it I would turn my car off then back on and it will go off. . . Lately it will come on and stay on, now it won't start! in the morning I will try what everyone else tried with turning the key until the light goes off, but this is really ashame that this many people are having the same problem! I replaced the fuel pump a year in a half ago for this same problem and it was no way cheap! try $1,200 at a gm dealership that only use gm parts on their gm cars! I'm a broke college student that needs my vehicle for transportation between school and work! please just recall these cars so they can have this problem taken care of. . . Should I take my problem to the media to get some sort of results? it seems if that's the only way to get anything done now a days. . .

29 Equipment problem of the 2003 Oldsmobile Alero

Failure Date: 12/11/2010

I have a 2003 Oldsmobile Alero. The horn stopped working, checked fuse and that was fine. Took car to dealer that I bought it from. They informed me that the horn is attached to airbag module, to get horn to work again I would have to replace airbag module, approximate cost $1100. 00. I do not have that kind of money for repair. I need a horn. . . . . Not a new airbag module! why replace a perfectly good airbag module to get the horn to work? definite design flaw. Costly one at that.

30 Equipment problem of the 2002 Oldsmobile Alero

Failure Date: 02/03/2009

Car shut off and lost power to steering and braking due to ignition failure. Car would randomly shut off while driving. Issue was faulty ignition and was replaced by local mechanic.

31 Equipment problem of the 2002 Oldsmobile Alero

Failure Date: 06/06/2008

The turn signals on my vehicle quit working. I contacted gm and they advised me to take to dealer. Dealer found a defective hazard switch. My vehicle is a 2002 Alero, there have been recalls for the same problem on earlier models but not mine, however it is the same defect.

32 Equipment problem of the 2002 Oldsmobile Alero

Failure Date: 11/12/2006

Turn signals do not always work and car does not always start, need to wait 10 minutes for car to start ir reset with key in the on position.

33 Equipment problem of the 2001 Oldsmobile Alero

Failure Date: 05/01/2003

Trim is peeling on doors and on dash.

34 Equipment problem of the 2000 Oldsmobile Alero

Failure Date: 08/14/2000

I own a 2000 Oldsmobile Alero. At 2 years old and 22,xxx miles the rotors became out of round causing the steering wheel to shake violently upon depressing the brake pedal. The manufacturer opted to resurface the rotors. At 3 years and 34,xxx miles the rotors again became out of round. Again causing the steering wheel to shake upon depressing the brake pedal. This time, with the vehicle out of its 3 year manufacturers warranty, the manufacturer opted to resurface the rotors at my cost. The dealer refused to replace or repair the defective rotors. The problem was not fixed the first time and the rotors obviously should have been replaced. Has there been other complaints filed on behalf of the Alero and defective rotors? what should I do next?.
