3 Alternator/generator/regulator problem

Failure Date: 12/01/2010

My blinkers on the driver's side (front and back) began to malfunction and would only work intermittently in 2010. This went on for about a year and then the passenger side blinkers (front and back) began to malfunction in the same manner about 6 months later. This went on with both sides working only intermittently for 2 years. Then, suddenly while driving at night and trying to make a left turn in mid 2012, the passenger side blinker started making very loud electrical glitch sounds and then completely blew and my car died with it. I had to replace the alternator shortly after and the passenger side blinkers worked perfectly, but I had to drive with out my driver's side blinkers until mid 2013, when I could not pass dmv required inspection. I paid to have the driver's side blinker relay system replaced and it worked for about a month but then both driver and passenger side blinkers started working intermittently again. Within 1 month, the driver's side blinker relay system completely failed again (passenger works, except I have to wiggle and mess with the emergency hazards lights to get it to even turn on at all). Now I have one pair of blinkers not working at all, and one that is intermittent, 3/4 of the time it works but only if I distractedly wiggle my hazard light button while trying to turn or change lanes. Mechanics are baffled and don't know what too tell me! this is a dangerous condition for anyone to be driving with and I fear it will cause an accident someday soon. I have also had the same issue with my headlights intermittently dimming that has been reported by many gm consumers since I started driving the vehicle in 2007. I do not want to have to pay another mechanic to replace my driver's side turn signal relay system, just for it fail again due to these dangerous electrical system problems in my 2000 Oldsmobile Intrigue. Gm needs to act quickly!.

4 Alternator/generator/regulator problem

Failure Date: 05/05/2010

No injuries as of yet but a default in the left side directional (signal) turning light. Works for a day and then burns out creating burn plastic in the socket, could lead to a wiring problem causing the alternator and such to burn out.

5 Alternator/generator/regulator problem

Failure Date: 12/01/2006

Headlights, instrument lights, and fan dim and or flicker while driving. The problem is most prevalent when the temperature is colder and during acceleration. However problem also exists under normal city and highway driving conditions. Engine performance and radio does not falter during the dimming of the lights. Alternator was replaced following TSB 010603001 one year ago. Problem appeared resolved until cold weather set in again.

6 Alternator/generator/regulator problem

Failure Date: 02/14/2006

2000 olds Intrigue will not crank intermittently. Once it cranks car starts and runs perfectly. Has been into dealer several times, but to no avail. Crank sensor was replaced 2/2006 at my expense. It made no difference in cranking problem. Also has flickering problem with headlights. Alternator has been replaced twice at gm's expense.

7 Alternator/generator/regulator problem

Failure Date: 04/06/2004

2000 olds Intrigue - car purchased new. 3 of the 4 power window motors replaced at $600 per window within the last 9-12 months. Car presently has 57k miles. Transmission repaired twice before 6k miles. Steering noise present since almost new but seems functional (dealer stated this is "normal"). Alternator and thermostat/assembly have been replaced.

8 Alternator/generator/regulator problem

Failure Date: 03/27/2004

The alternator ripped out of the engine block. This resulted in the vehicle stalling on 3 separate occasions. When this occurred the vehicle lost power steering and brakes, which almost caused an accident. Mechanic indicated that he had never seen anything like this before, and didn't know what could have caused it.

9 Alternator/generator/regulator problem

Failure Date: 01/15/2004

While driving at night the head lights intermittently went from bright to dim. When using the heater fan it would go from high to low or from low to high. Please provide further information. Consumer said that this condition had occurred several times during cold weather. Alternator was redesigned but didn't correct the condition being experienced by consumer.

10 Alternator/generator/regulator problem

Failure Date: 12/21/2003

Lights dimming and flickering, started at 7,000 miles. Repaired windshield wiper arm which was disengaged from wiper transmission @ 29,318 miles. Lights went totally off at night and check engine light came on @ 40,269 miles. Dealer changed. Alternator and mass air flow sensor. Dealer said to use ac air filter instead of fram air filter. Wiper arm broke again @ 43,349 miles, dealer replaced wiper transmission. Check engine light @ 63,455 miles. Dtc (diagnostic trouble code) indicates (maf) mass air flow sensor. Code was cleared and then came back on @ 64,355 miles. Same maf code. When this happens the car will hicup, lights go out and engine stalls for a fraction of a second. This last time the dtc indicated the car was traveling at 62 mph. In addition, the front tire wore to the cord in 38,000 miles. Rear left tire with inside tire wear in 10,000 miles. Discussed problems with factory rep with no results. Car appears to be a safty problem.

11 Alternator/generator/regulator problem

Failure Date: 02/19/2003

Headlights dim on and off, heater fan goes on and off, interior lights go on and off, took to dealer and was told alternator voltage regulator is bad. Replaced alternator and it fixed problem.

12 Alternator/generator/regulator problem

Failure Date: 02/18/2002

Problem seems to be getting worse. Dealer is unsympathitac towards this problem. Dealers and repair shops are inconsistent in their diagnoses of the problem. Gm refuses to acknowledge that a severe problem exists until someone becomes injured or gets killed becaue of it. The NHTSA has opened an investigation into this persistent problem and gm still is unphased an apethetic towards the plight of the consumer. No safety defect listed.

13 Alternator/generator/regulator problem

Failure Date: 11/01/2001

Electrical problems with vehicle. Power loss and possibly surges throughout entire vehicle. Replacing alternator will not solve issue. All wiring is tightly connected.

14 Alternator/generator/regulator problem

Failure Date: 05/08/2001

The alternator has been replaced twice, also the headlamps flicker and have shut off while driving, dealer discovered that the bolt for battery ground cable bottomed out in block not allowing cable to ground consistantly, consumer began to experience problem again, dealer inspected the wire harness, installed a new body control module, dealer stated lights dimmed when air was commanded on, however consumer was informed that vehicle is operating normally.

15 Alternator/generator/regulator problem

Failure Date: 05/08/2001

16 Alternator/generator/regulator problem

Failure Date: 11/01/2000

The headlights filcker at various times and this alternator has been replaced 3 times. The dealer has done all that they can, but the alternator failure is a design flaw with the 3. 5l engine. I have been told that this is not a major problem, but the 'flickering' has become more regular and seems to happens for a longer duratation. I look forward to a solution from gm on this.

17 Alternator/generator/regulator problem

Failure Date: 10/20/2000

Bought car oct 2000 as a used auto. Immediately had problems with it. Has been in shop for each of these 4-5 times at least. It has a vibration in the steering system. Midshaft was replaced, but it returned. Olds did say they would attempt to fix this. Ordered a new intermediate shaft, but they could not find what was actually causing this problem. Been also in shop for lights flickering, heater surging, temp gauge running hot. Alternator was replaced after a 3 week stay at the dealer. This problem returned 3 days before midshaft was to be replaced the 2nd time. Called dealership that was going to replace shaft, and decided to hold off until we could settle this with olds. Olds is not trying to rectify easily. I am reporting this to better business bureau at this time.

18 Alternator/generator/regulator problem

Failure Date: 10/01/2000

All interior and exterior lights will spontaneously dim. Dealer has replaced alternator, and inspected electrical system, and could not find cause. Problem still occurs. Dealer is ordering another alternator.

19 Alternator/generator/regulator problem

Failure Date: 06/06/2000

The major complaint I have with this automobile is the electrical system. The lights constantly flare and flicker as if they are shorting out. Gm has claimed that there was a problem with the alternator and after a substantial wait for a remedy that being a redisigned alternator gm still has not fixed the problem. The lights have flickered on and off since the auto was purchased. The mechanics at my dealership have tried but failed to find the problem . The alternator has been replaced twice one by the dealer in desperation and again when the newly redesigned from gm arrived after nearly 6 months from the original promise of a fix came in . My greatest fear is that the computer in this car will fail with all the power surges being put through the electrical sytem. In my opinion this has manifested itself already with the need to reprogram the computer in this car. As this auto was purchased new I would have thought I was purchasing a vehicle free from defects. I hope that this vehicle doesn't turn into a money pit. Thank goodness these problems began while under warranty hopefully gm will continue to honor the warranty after it expires.

20 Alternator/generator/regulator problem

When driving at night with headlights on, without any warning headlights will completely shut down ,causing poor visibiity for driver. Dealer has not been able to determine cause. Intermittently, the head lamps flicker and shut off. Alternator failed. Alternator was replaced twice, once because it was charging 14. 2 volts. Left rear tire cupped badly, causing noise, no specific tire information given.
