Most of the day may 8,2010 been doing some city but mostly highway driving totaling approximately 100 miles. Stopped for an hour after the first 50 then drove another 40 stopping again for about 15 minutes. Drove the last 10 home and left car idling to go into my house for approximately 8 minutes. My wife started walking to car and wasn't there yet when car drove forward into garage door. She jumped in passenger side and shifter was still in park. Scraped some of the paint off of the car and smashed the garage door. Have no idea how or why it would have done this.

Slowly but surely, some of my electrical systems have been failing. It first started with lights burning out repeatedly, then went to turn signals not working properly, then went to power windows functioning improperly, then the temperature/mpg/oil display stopped functioning, then I had to replace the alternator and the problems got even worse. I have also had issues with the vehicle drifting up to 3 feet backwards if on a slight incline and in drive. Please check into these issues and resolve. I am scared for my family's safety due to the increasing electrical issues. I am beginning to think this may be a fire hazard. We have tried replacing the switches for the windows, the bulbs and tail light assembly. The issues with the windows get better when the switch is replaced and then get even worse than before in no time flat. In addition to these issues we have had to replace the bearings repeatedly.

Hard shifting on multiple occurrences. Seems associated with rapid speed changes. After turning car off and waiting a few seconds, the problem goes away.
On an incline (while in drive wiht the engine running) my 2001 olds Silhouette van will roll backwards when my foot is taken off the brake (as it is transitioning to the gas pedal). If the inclince is steep enough, I actually have to put my left foot on the brake and increase the engine speed to around 900 rpm to prevent the car from rolling backwards when my foot is taken off the brake. The dealer tells me they have received a lot of complaints about this, but that is the way it was designed.

Consumer states that while driving transmission will shift gears erratically w/o warning. Dlr has replaced vehicle's valve body and kick down cable, but problem is still occuring. Mr.
No summary listed for abov evehicle.
Vehicle purchased from dealer who originally sold it. Some warranty left. Transmission taken to dealer for service. Dealer changed fluid, said metal shavings in transmission pan. This was the first time I had transmission serviced and was told at purchase time that first owner had all maintenance done at dealer.

Whenever at a light or stop sign on a hill with vehicle running, and consumer takes foot off brakes to press gas pedal vehicle, it will roll back. Consumer feels that vehicle should not roll so far back if it is not in reverse. It's like driving a stick shift. Consumer has contacted dealer, and dealer was not able to duplicate problem. Nlm.
I've had brakes fixed, and have replaced the tires twice! the back-end keeps making noise every time you change the gear from park to drive or any other gear. The brakes squeal a lot and the back end seems like it wants to come off, very loud and very loud squealing. Would not recommend anyone to buy this type of vehicle and I won't buy another one! car has had these problems since purchased new in 1998, but under a 5 year lease, I feel stuck! very dissatisfied customer!.
The transmission on this vehiclewill not hold on a hill it drifts back when on a uphill and drifts forward when on an downhill and the dealer said that this happens with all gm vehicles. We drove other models of olds and they did the same thing I hope this problem can be fixed it is a nice vehicle but we had to return it we paid for a automatic transmission and it feels like we got a standard. I hope to here from you soon about this.
After a few hours of highway driving, I pulled into my driveway and went into the house for about an hour. I came out later and drove to the store, and as I was pulling away from a traffic signal, the shifting of gears (auto-trans) was very forceful, bucking the van, like it was having trouble shifting. The first dealership (paul brothers) tried to explain that the fluid level was low by 1 quart, so they filled it. The problem continued off and on until I finally took it into a different dealership (koons - manassas), and they found that the problem was a bad pressure control selenoid, which they replaced. My concern is that not only may I have lessened the life expectancy of the vehicle due to the misdiagnosis, I also am concerned about a possible problem on other Silhouettes in the 15k-20k range of this happening to them as well. Possible recall issue for safety reasons.
Went up an incline and stopped, in the time it takes to move foot from brake to gas pedal, at the top of a hill, the vehicle begins to roll backwards when in drive gear. The vehicle stalled while in drive rolling backwards down the hill.
Automatic sliding door closed on its own. Also, automatic reverse mechanism did not work. Owner was pinned in door and injured when putting child in safety seat. The van is being looked over by dealership.
Serious safety issue - power assist steering momentarily inoperable on 1/13, 3/12, 4/12, 4/14, 5/11, 5/12 (twice) and 5/13. Occurs when driving through water puddles. Dealer attempted to fix with after market belt. Problem is worse now because length of outage is more brief and just when driver added pressure to steer without power assist it started to work causing overcorrection. Vehicle is currently at dealer for scrutiny. On 4/21, automatic sliding door popped open when car gear shift was moved out of park position. This is not supposed to happen. Dealer cleaned contacts and days later the unit broke. Dealer has completed most of repair. Injury to passenger next to door could occur if door were to open while driving.
My automatic transmission; Silhouette drifts backwards down a hill in when in drive. 1. Take the car to a medium to steep hill (preferably steep so you see the full effect). 2. Completely stop the car. 3. Take your foot off the brake but do not touch the accelerator. Notice that the car drifts backwards and if you are on a slight hill it will stop after about a foot. If you are on a steep hill it will drift all the way down the hill picking up speed as it goes. This is very much a safety problem and if it is acceptable behavior then I believe Oldsmobile will be in for law suites. I bought this van because I have kids. The school I pick my children up has a steep hill and I can't be worried every day that I may drift backwards into some parent and child walking behind my car because of this flaw. They park our cars close to each other during pick up time to get as many cars into the lot. I'm finding myself two footing or keeping my foot on the accelerator to keep from drifting backward into the car behind me and this is ridiculous!!! I refuse to continue doing that. This was reported to the dealer and manufacturer, who said that it is working as designed, and we will need to put up with it, even if it means using one foot on the brake and one on the gas!!! gm customer support said this was a "safety feature" of the van!!!! so that it would not go forward when your foot was removed from the brake!!! I would like to have one of them stand behind my van when I'm sitting on a hill, and then let them tell me how much of "safety feature" it is!!!.
Automatic transmission; vehicle drifts backwards down a hill in when in drive.
Transmission does not hold the van while in drive, even on a slight incline. Car will drift backwards causing a safty issue. It's like driving a manual transmission. If you are sitting at a traffic light, foot on the brake, as soon as you remove your foot from the brake, the van drifts backwards. If a car happens to be behind you, or even worst if someone is walking behind you, they could be potentially hit or run over. Dealers recommendation of using one foot on the brake and the other on the gas is unacceptable. They say that this van does not have a hill holding feature in the transmission, and it is something that we are going to have to live with.
Have had various problems with passenger automatic sliding door. Has been in shop 4 or more times for door alone. Problems have included door not wanting to close all of the way, closing and reopening constantly for minutes at a time, and door closing on people. If anything obstructs power sliding door while it is closing it is suppose to automatically reverse to open position. On many occasions it will continue to close on a grown adult. Transmission has many problems with it. Our transmission has been replaced yet problems still occuring. The various problems are not consistent. Sometimes I can drive the van and it seems fine while at other times it acts up alot. Sometimes going between reverse and drive it hesitates then shifts hard. Sometimes while taking off from stop it is slow to change gears and then shifts hard. At times it whines and acts sluggish while driving at a constant speed. After putting van into park van would roll at times atleast a foot, even on flat, level surfaces. This also happens on hills, I am not sure if this is normal for a hill but I was sure that it could not be for level ground. On one paticular occasion after pulling out from a stop sign the van could not pick up speed, the van was whinning as if it could not change into the next gear. After pulling over and starting again it gained speed but shifited hard.

At any stop where the road is on a slight incline, the van will begin to roll backwards when the brake is released. Accordingly, you have to have your foot on the brake and gas at the same time to avoid a rollback at a stop light. Accordingly, an accident can occur if the car rolls back or too much gas is given while the break is being depressed. Gm dealer said this is normal for this model. My Ford winstar does not do this on the same hills.
Transmission design does not prevent vehicle from rolling backward while in drive gear, resulting in vehicle stalling. Mjs.
Vehicle will roll backwards without stopping when in drive on a upward incline. The tourque converter does not stop the car from rolling back. This is very dangerous in traffic. The dealer and manufacturer stated that this is normal and cannot be repaired. I do not agree with this. A van should not roll back 20 feet while transmission is in drive.
