43 problems related to automatic transmission have been reported for the 1996 Plymouth Grand Voyager. The most recently reported issues are listed below.
My transmission ,my starter, air con. ,brakes, driver side window, belt, & pulley all have had to have work done on it but now I cant drive my van because of the transmission & I've only had my van since 03/21/2008.
The consumer stated that the windshield wipers worked intermittently, and sometimes would not shut off. The consumer took the vehicle to the dealer, and was told that the problem was due to the power distribution center of the vehicle which was malfunctioning. To repair vehicle would cost approximately $700. 00. The wiper problem would occur at startup, while turning and or while in motion. The transmission would become a problem as well.
While shifting from park to drive vehicle did not move. Consumer had vehicle parked for two months, and stated that the vehicle would be towed in the near future to the dealer for analysis.
My wife was driving our kids on the highway at 65 mph when the van suddenly shifted into second gear. This nearly caused a huge accident. I then find that the transmission needed replacement. I researched this problem and found that this is not a unique problem by any means. Chrysler is aware of this problem, and has not made any significant changes to their transmission. This "safe mode" where the transmission goes to second gear is made to allow the driver to drive to a safe place. If Chrysler can't make a more durable transmission, they should be able to at least make the "safe mode" go to nuetral instead of second gear at high speeds. On a more sad note, $2,400. 00 later for a rebuilt transmission(the best price I could find), I found out the the van isn't worth much more than that anyway. Too bad, because I actually like the van and how it works for our family. I will have to go to another brand after this one completely dies.
Transmission made a loud bang and then the car would not accellerate, and the transmission dumped all the oil on the road.
We had the transmission rebuilt at 62,000 mile - broke again at 47,000 miles later.
While traveling on highway and without prior warning metal parts attached to transmission came apart, and fell onto the ground.
When at the shopping center parking lot traveling at 5 mph transmission went out, and wheels locked up. Contacted dealer, and dealer was not willing to do assist.
While driving at 50 mph vehicle died. Consumer was able to start vehicle again and drive it in lowest gear. There was no reverse or over gears. Consumer took vehicle to a mechanic, and they stated that transmission had been replaced before. Please provide any further information.
In Jan of 2000 I had to take my minivan in to have the transmission overhauled. I was still under warranty and the dealer wouldnt put a new transmission in, they said they couldnt do that. Now here it is Aug 2001 and 20,000 miles later and here we go again, I need a new transmission, upon contacting the dealer and having the vehicle checked now they want me to pay $2300 to pay for a replacement transmission with a 3 year warranty. This is what I asked them to do at 47,000 but was told they couldnt. Had the replacement been done at 47,000 miles as I had asked I wouldnt be putting any money out of my pocket. Your assistance in this matter is greatly appreciated.
At 45mph the transmission suddenly went out and the car went into a neutral state.
While consumer was driving transmission jumped out of place. It jumped into neutral, then into second gear. Contacted dealer, and dealer was not willing to do anything. The dealer indicated that the transmission problem was not uncommon for these types of vehicle.

Automatic transmission had to be completely rebuilt. It all started with just a small oil leak and turned into a major problem. They told us we were lucky we got it there when we did, or we would have been stranded somewhere on the road.
Pulling out of parking lot across 2-way traffic, heard loud clunk, then transmission lost power. Barely managed to pull off shoulder. No fwd or reverse. Dealer states transmission needs replacement ($1957). Since out of warranty, Chrysler corp. Unwilling to help - claim to not be aware of transmission problems on this yr/make/model. Also, dealer states vehicle leaking oil past cam shaft seals. Replacement to cost $1200. Have paid over $3000 on many other prior repairs on vehicle.
Defective pin in transmission malfunctioned which caused vehicle to stall unexpectedly, which may have resulted in a crash. Common problem. Please provide further information.
Airbag light came on/criuse control stopped working. Dealer replaced clock spring assembly. At same time engine check light came on. Dealer replaced oxygen sensor. Also, transmission went out at 10400 miles, and emergency brake had to be replaced 3 times.

Air bags are something that should not fail on a vehicle since it is government regulated safety equipment on a vehicle and it is a low wear item. My airbags have failed and Chrysler expects me to pay to fix them. They have also tied the airbags into the horn and cruise control. I feel that since this is a safety related item, Chrysler should be responsible for the repairs. If these bags fail to deploy or misfire due to their design, I and my passengers could be severely hurt or killed.
2nd time the transmission died, lasted 2 months this time.
While driving at highway speed transmission lost power, forcing consumer off the road.
The transmission just died. Luckily, we made it to our work parking lot and weren't stranded in a heavy traffic situation or in a snowstorm. Total cost of repair estimated at $1900. Environmental hazard of leaking oil when transmission case also cracks. Coincidence???: my boss just informed me today that his 1996 Chrysler product Mini-van with less miles than mine had a similar transmission problem some time ago. I believe the Chrysler product Mini-van transmissions are junk and Chrysler knows it, but the transmission defect only causes a true "safety" hazard when it breaks in a situation where continuing speed is necessary (like passing). Obviously, the transmission oil getting dumped on the streets when the transmission case cracks isn't good. But again, why would Chrysler care about a little oil?.
I have several friends with the same vehicle and the same problem(transmission ruined due to computer failure/malfunction. Also the master switch in these vehicles is faulty(that is the switch for windshield wipers/turn signal) that causes wipers to come on of their own accord. I am afraid to speculate on the problems that could arise if the turn signal portion was to malfunction as well.
Transmission needs to be replaced second time.
I was stopped at a stop light. Upon acceleration there was a loud thump. The transmission exploded sending parts of the transmission through the transmission case. My wife and kids were in the van. Someone could have been hurt if the parts exploded upward. I see several similar complaints for this model van on this site.
While driving down the highway car started to lose power, and then completely cut off.
I think it is awful to replace a transmission at 50,000, something is just not right! there should be a recall if others have experienced this!.
Final drive gear failed, pieces of gear put two holes in transmission case. Had to buy new transmission and couldn't get $500 core charge back because case was damaged.
While driving at 72 mph transmission went out without prior warning.
Transmission goes into neutral, hesitating then banging into 1st gear.
Transmission had to be replaced because pump in transmission stopped working and vehicle was difficult to put into gear. Contacted dealer.
Told dealer of problem . Said if doesnt do it all the time hard to tell theres a problem . He told me to bring it in so we can test drive van. When it first wouldnt go when I put it in gear , took it to dealer . Service man said to make sure you have transmission fluid . Of coure only had van about a month when happened , which I stated. He said sometimes they forget to check all fluid levels.
The consumer has been experiencing problems with automatic transmission. Automatic transmission went out. The manufacturer has yet to be contacted.
Transmission has a hole in it.
Was traveling about 40mph when, without warning, the transmission suddenly died/stalled out. Coasted vehicle to side of road. Had vehicle towed to dealership.
