While driving straight at 40 mph on a smooth roadway, city street, the right, lower ball joint separated from the a-frame. The steering wheel locked. I was able to guide the vehicle to the right edge of the roadway. There was no warning. . Noise or any other indication of the failure. Just the pop of the failed ball joint separating and then the right front of the car scraping on the pavement. Other vehicles in the area steered around me to avoid a collision.

Front lower ball joint broke.
The lower ball joints fail constantly, I have had to replace my lower ball joints 3 times in 19,000 miles. Chrysler has recalled them and replaced them free for the first failure, but will not replace additional failures. A lower ball joint failure will cause loss of steering and will cause an accident. Every time they fail, they also destroy the rim. Chrysler knows very well that this is a problem, but will not cover the cost of replacements after they have repaired this item once. Every time there is a failure, Chrysler wants to sell you a complete lower control arm that cost $ 1200 dollars each. The lower ball joint usually fails when pulling away from a curb with the wheels turned, and there is a loss of steering at this point. Chrysler knows this is a problem, and should warranty this item for life as most of the Prowlers are very low mileage with less than 30,000 miles. Chrysler does have a recall kit that is available to dealers only that includes the ball joints only , but will not sell them to the public and we can only buy them with the complete lower control arm. This is a safety item that can & will cause an accident. The recall kit part number is ( cbbtc030).

I own a 2001 Chrysler Prowler and on September 25, 2010 I was driving home from a car show and the right front lower ball joint failed. The lower suspension "a" arm collapsed and the wheel caved in. Just an hour earlier I was driving on the freeway and this could have resulted in a terrible accident. This ball joint was the replacement from a re-call for all Prowler ball joints. The ball joint that failed was the "new" design and I don't understand why it too failed. I had the car towed to the Chrysler dealership and they replaced both lower balls joint under the previous "re-call" notification for the second time.
The contact owns a 2000 Plymouth Prowler. In 2001, the contact first experienced failure with the front passenger side lower ball joint. The dealer replaced the lower ball joint at the cost of $1,800. In 2003, the contact received a recall notice for NHTSA campaign id number 03v034000 (suspension: front: control arm: lower arm). The vehicle was taken to the dealer a total of five times for the failure. The most recent failure occurred on February 8, 2008. While driving approximately 5 mph, the front passenger side lower ball joint failed. The vehicle will be repaired. The failure mileage was 30,000 and current mileage was 120,000.

Six months ago consumer received NHTSA recall 03v034000; concerning control arm ball joints. Dealer still didn't have the proper tools to fix the vehicle.
1st. Thing I noticed a couple of months ago was the steering of the car was getting harder and harder to control, and I was hearing cracking and popping noises comming from the front end but I nor anyone else who also heard the noises could tell just where they were comming from , and I own a car lift but evan after many many inspections I could never see anything wrong or out of place , I was told that my steering rack was making a lot of noise so I had and alinement done and was told that I did have ( something wrong ) but they did not no what it was either , so after discussing this with my dealer on 8-7-02 and making an appointment for a new steering rack to be installed on 8-19 -02 , but on 8-8-02 at 7:50 am and driving over a bridge on north 14th. Street the left lower ball joint came appart and let the left front wheel and tire assy. Fly off but still attatched from the upper ball joint and brake line but bouncing vilently against the ground and body untill I could quit sliding down the bridge and stear the car around the corner and off of the main street , I called my dealer and later requested that the stresses upper ball joint be replace as well as the right lower ball joint but was told they would not do that , I am very worried that what happened on the left side will soon happen on the right side and I dont want to go through this again , I was only going 35 mph and driving in town but what would happen on the interstate at 75 mph , I now think of it as a ticking time bomb ready to go off at any time and the driving experiance wont be the same anymore .
Left lower ball joint snapped, and could have caused an accident. Cause unknown. Dealer notified.
While driving 2 mph and without warning, the lower right ball joint broke causing the right wheel to fall off, no accident occurred.
The dealership was unable to perform the lower control arm ball joint recall 03v-034000,the brake system lamp recall 99v-245000, the frame strength recall 99v-313000, and the gear shift position lighting recall 98v-104000 because the parts haven't been available. This has been going on for over 3 years.
Consumer has been waiting since March of 2003 for parts. Suspension was broken. Dealer stated parts were not available.
While driving at 55 mph, consumer states vehicle took a nose dive into the pavement and suddenly drifted to the left hitting a concrete barrier. Took to dealer and dealer states the front drivers side ball joint had separated. Please provide any further information. Ph.
