Exterior Lighting Problems of Porsche 911

Porsche 911 owners have reported 6 problems related to exterior lighting (under the exterior lighting category). The most recently reported issues are listed below. Also please check out the statistics and reliability analysis of Porsche 911 based on all problems reported for the 911.

1 Exterior Lighting problem of the 2013 Porsche 911

Failure Date: 01/20/2026

Rear taillights can fall off the vehicle. This component is available for inspection and causes issues when other motorists are unable to see turn signals, brake lights, fog lights, and reverse lights. Mine fell off while driving on the highway and then through the city. There were no warning lights or indicating of the issue.

2 Exterior Lighting problem of the 2022 Porsche 911

Failure Date: 12/01/2024

Rear tailight internal stress cracks causing condensation moisture and dust buildup. Dealer says this is normal, vehicle is only 2 years old, 20k miles and under warranty. Seems like there is a seal issue with the moisture and dust due to the internal cracks of the taillights. I've read on rennlist and seen on youtube that this is occurring for others as well that own 992 911's. The taillights were inspected by two dealers, one said it was normal but did not mention cracks, another dealer confirmed it was due to "stress cracks" inside the taillights but that this is normal. The manufacturer (Porsche north America) was contacted and responded that since 2 dealers could not find an issue a replacement was not warranted. I've had numerous other faults with the vehicle in 2 years of ownership, also having to replace the front windshield due to delamination of the windshield seals but I was not included in the recall that affected other owners with the same issue.

3 Exterior Lighting problem of the 2012 Porsche 911

Failure Date: 09/21/2024

Tail light fall off the car while driving, catching it dangling from the car holding by only one wire. Upon inspection, they came off due to a broken plastic lug that was holding the taillights together. It appears that Porsche changed the taillight mounting design in the 991 after the 2013 model year, adding a metal piece to keep it together even after the plastic cracks, melts, or fails. Mine is 2012 so it will cost us a fortune for get it fixed, for something it was clearly a design failure from the beginning.

4 Exterior Lighting problem of the 2013 Porsche 911

Failure Date: 10/10/2023

The taillamp housing failed, and taillamp fell out of the vehicle. Online research shows that this is a design defect that Porsche learned of early in the "991. 1" generation cars, as it is reported by multiple owners at multiple sites online. Well, happened to my early 991. 1 also. Porsche recognized the fatigue-failure within a year or so of launch, and instituted a fairly simple fix, by adding a metal reinforcement to the backside of the taillamp, to reinforce the insufficient plastic-only initial design. They launched this revised taillamp into 2014my or early 2015my cars (not sure when). No failures since. Porsche attempted to sweep this defect 'under the rug' by not recalling all earlier cars to institute a fix, but rather would just repair cars that failed under warranty. Porsche should not accept taillamps falling off of cars, especially at owners expense (and Porsche pricing!! ouch). Please investigate.

5 Exterior Lighting problem of the 2013 Porsche 911

Failure Date: 07/13/2023

The tail light assembly mounting fastener failed and the tail light assembly fell out of the rear bumper assembly. There was no indication of a failure while driving. Apparently this is a known issue with the 991. 1 version of the 911. I’ve owned the car since new (my 2013), have it serviced at a Porsche dealership and have not been notified of the potential safety issue.

6 Exterior Lighting problem of the 2007 Porsche 911

Failure Date: 04/04/2008

This is not a complaint of a vehicle I own but a complaint I believe to be safety related. Some Porsche models like 911 and boxter have a side marker light that is located at the wheel opening. At night there is a bright white light that shines back at vehicles driving behind the Porsche in the lane next to them. This either makes it hard for the other driving to see as this light has a blinding effect or will give the driver the impression that an on coming car is approaching in their lane. I believe the fix to be simple but the current situation is unsafe.
