I own a 2022 Porsche Cayenne. The vehicle intermittently displays a red “occupant seat belt not fastened – fasten seat belt” warning and sounds the seat belt warning chime while the front passenger seat is completely unoccupied and nothing is placed on the seat. This problem first began intermittently in approximately 2025 and has continued to occur. In September and October, 2026, the problem occurred again for over one week now while I was driving. The front passenger seat was completely empty, but the vehicle indicated that an occupant was present and needed to fasten the seat belt. I photographed the instrument cluster while the warning was active. I am concerned that the vehicle may be incorrectly detecting the occupancy status of the front passenger seat or may have a malfunction in the passenger seat belt/occupant restraint system. Because passenger occupancy information may be used by the vehicle’s restraint and air bag systems, I am concerned about whether the vehicle can correctly determine passenger occupancy and provide the appropriate restraint protection in a crash. The problem was intermittent, which makes it difficult to reproduce consistently until very recently. The vehicle is available for inspection. Porsche has issued technical information concerning “occupant seat belt not fastened” warnings on Cayenne vehicles, but to my knowledge my vehicle is not currently covered by a recall for this condition. The manufacturer warranty has expired, although this intermittent problem began before the warranty expired. I am requesting that NHTSA evaluate whether this condition may represent a safety-related defect affecting 2022 Porsche Cayenne vehicles or other similarly equipped Cayenne vehicles.
The contact owns a 2021 Porsche Cayenne. The contact stated that while driving at various speeds, the front driver's side seat belt independently tightened and loosened. The emergency light illuminated, and a seat belt warning chime sounded continuously. The vehicle was taken to a local dealer, where it was diagnosed that the seat belt assembly needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired and remained at the local dealer. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 14,000.
The contact owns a 2020 Porsche Cayenne. The contact stated that the front driver’s side seat belt failed to buckle and became unusable. The dealer and the manufacturer were notified of the failure. The contact was advised to schedule an appointment for the vehicle to be repaired at the owner's expense. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The contact related the failure to an unknown recall. The failure mileage was approximately 68,000.
Seat belt and airbag indication lights and sound alarms remain on and notifying on the dashboard regardless of buckling. It will intermittently stop and start as the car is in motion. In the beginning, notification was present then resolved day-to-day. More recently, the alarm is present every drive. Driver was unsure whether or not the notifications were valid or not as the pattern of notification had little consistency. Dealership service later admitted that it was a faulty seat belt buckle and that part had failed internally, but refused to remedy it unless paid for. Car is essentially inoperable and unsafe until faulty buckle is replaced, as a faulty seat belt buckle can be fatal, with faulty implying a manufacturing issue and not of user misuse or abuse of systems. Manufacturer will not provide warranty and dealership continues to demand vehicle owner to pay.
Just purchased this vehicle from an independent dealer. Each time I test drove the vehicle, I put my seat belt on and after a few seconds of driving the driver's seat belt would come unlatched. Sales person told me that perhaps I wasn't latching it (false latch). After purchase, it has unlatched during my first day of driving it. I see that there are other customers complaining of the same issue on the NHTSA website.
The driver's side seat belt unlatches, even when it appears to have been properly latched and I pull on it to confirm that it is latched. This happens whether or not the vehicle is in motion. This is happening constantly, but I will fill in today's date below.
Automatic locking retractor was not present in seat belt for rear center seat. Fmvss208 requires a seat belt locking feature be present to install a child's car seat. Owner's manual indicates that all rear seating positions + front passenger seat have an alr - but in this vehicle the outboard rear seats + front passenger seat had it, but the center seat did not. While driving I heard a loud knocking noise and comming from under the center console and my truck started to shake. I came to a complete stop then proceeded on but once the truck got over 20mph the knocking noise started again .
