SAAB 9-3 owners have reported 3 problems related to noises during shifting (under the power train category). The most recently reported issues are listed below. Also please check out the statistics and reliability analysis of SAAB 9-3 based on all problems reported for the 9-3.
Hard shifting, slipping of transmission when accelerating. 2006 aero v6, when cold the shifting of the automatic transmission is very stiff resulting in noises and bumps when up or down shifting in the 'auto' mode. Shifting into higher gearing at highway speeds are slow and often up and down as the transmission tries to find the correct gear range. This occurs (looking for gears) when warm. Also when warm going down hill the shifting bumps very hard to lower gears causing car to slow down dramatically. When cold, transmission sometimes will not shift up when accelerating while making a turn from a stop.

The contact owns a 2002 SAAB 9-3. While driving 30 mph, the vehicle began to hesitate as if the emergency brake was engaged. The contact also heard a grinding noise coming from the vehicle. She was unable to drive more than 20 mph. When the mechanic attempted to test drive the vehicle, it failed to shift into gear. The mechanic stated that the gears inside the transmission exploded into little pieces. For three weeks, the mechanic attempted to repair the transmission, however, the transmission was diagnosed and repaired by another transmission specialist. The contact is requesting that SAAB pay the cost to repair the vehicle. The current and failure mileages were 60,000. Updated 02-01-08. The consumer stated the transmission light illuminated once again and is presently in the shop. Updated 02/01/08.

Leased 2003 SAAB 9-3 arc on 9/26 and this is my second complaint (10051379) and I still have not heard from SAAB customer care regarding their fixing the loud right rear rattling/knocking noise. I have called numerous times with no call back. I now have two more problems. . . The car hesitates, sputters and almost stalls. . . The dealer increased the idle and that was the fix. . . I do not feel safe when starting off from a stop or driving in stop and go traffic. Also the transmission is shifting hard between gears between 10 and 30 mphs. . . It started a few days ago and is becoming more prevalent as each day passes. . Both these problems along with the loud rattling/knocking noise from right rear that dealer says is normal tell me that this car has problems that SAAB doesn't want to deal with and that is not right.
