I have a recall complaint. . . Recall#: 14e044000 --steering; the wheel is stiff and hard to turn recall#: 14v153000 --steering: electric power assist system; hard to turn wheel, leaking ps fluid, no longer has whining noise. Vehicle was in motion and turning I had previously replaced my battery, because I constantly had to use a battery booster to start it after every time I shut the car off, and the former one became faulty and it tested as a bad battery. Within 2 days of replacing the battery, the ps fluid rapidly started leaking after starting the car ignition and the steering wheel is stiff and very hard to turn now. I've put more ps fluid in my car, but it doesn't help the stiff steering at all almost as if I never even put any ps fluid in it to begin with. I'm also having an electrical issue to where when I go to put on my brakes sometimes, it'll dim my lights at the same time while driving down the road.
The contact owns a 2008 Saturn Aura. The contact stated while driving approximately 25 mph, the steering wheel seized without warning. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic. The technician stated that the power steering fluid was leaking on the exhaust and advised the contact not to drive the vehicle since it could catch fire. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and stated the VIN was not included under NHTSA campaign id number: 14v153000 (steering). The approximate failure mileage was 48,900. Updated 10/14/14.
I began having issues with power steering fluid leaking on my 2008 Saturn Aura over a year ago (approximately January-March 2013). I had some temporary fixes done to help alleviate the problem, but on approximately April 1, 2014, my power steering system totally failed. I have been driving without power steering since this time. I had read that many 2008 Saturn Aura's were being recalled for this problem and hoped that my Aura would be included in this recall. When I realized that my car was not part of the recall, I had an estimate done to find out how much it would cost to have the power steering fixed. The estimate I received was over $1,200. 00. Because I do not have this kind of money readily available, I have not been able to have this problem taken care of. I am highly disappointed that gm is not covering more of the vehicles that may be affected by this problem. There was obviously an issue with parts for some 2008 Saturn Aura's (among others) - but apparently there are more vehicles affected than you are covering - or perhaps that you are aware of. I am hoping that maybe you will consider looking into this issue on other vehicles that were manufactured near the same time as those being recalled before there are more injuries and/or fatalities.
I started hearing a squealing noise when I turned my steering wheel. At times, there was also a popping sound. I took it to gm dealer on 11-1-11 and was told the steering gear was bad and leaking power steering fluid. It would need to be replaced for $988. 00. Warranty ran out in may of 2011.
