My 2000 Saturn Ls1 completely shut down while driving, and never started again. It will cost $2500 for a used motor and installation, plus $175 for the tow and the diagnostics; and now I'm enduring significant transportation challenges without a vehicle.

I was driving home on 7/26/08 Saturday night, and all of the sudden my engine just shut off. I had no warning and almost got in an accident. I pulled over and had to push the car into a parking lot at 11:00 pm. I did hear a noise from the engine right before it stopped, but I had no idea what it was. I had my mechanic tow it to his shop only to have him call me and tell me the timing chain had broken. It is going to cost 2000. 00 dollars to fix and I am a single mother, and don't have that kind of money. I guess I am trying to figure out why Saturn can get away with only recalling certain year cars for this problem!!!! my car is a Saturn l200 series, and I got it in 2002. It only has 45000 miles on it, and I can't believe this timing chain randomly broke!!! they should be held accountable for all the cars in question no matter what the cost. I almost made my daughter motherless!!!!!!!!!!.

I purchased a 2000 Saturn Ls 1 from carmax with 63,000 miles on it in September, 2007. Since February, 2008, I have spent more than $2,600 in repairs on the car; $1,600 was the timing chain which broke when the car only had 73,000 miles on it! I was told this was not a typical problem and that it was early for it to have broken. I see through my research that this is not untypical and is a frequent problem.
My son was driving our 2002 l100 Saturn at 11:00pm coming home and it just quit. It has been a very well maintained vehicle. It is a timing chain that went out. Saturn doesn't want to do anything about it. It has about 97,000 miles on it.
The contact owns a 2001 Saturn l200. While the vehicle was still in drive, the contact was able to easily remove the key from the ignition. As a result, the vehicle struck two vehicles and caused $2,320 in damages. The manufacturer stated that nothing could be done because the failure was not due to a safety defect. The Saturn dealer stated that the failure may have been due to an old steering column and the number of times the key has been used. The failure mileage was 66,900 and current mileage is 68,000. Updated 01/29/08 there was no damage done to the consumers vehicle. The consumer discovered he left the vehicle in drive, in though he had removed the key. Updated.

My family and I were traveling on u. S. 301 at 9:00 a. M. On our way home in our 2001 Saturn (l100) coupe. There was a clicking sound coming from the engine that had started while driving home. While going 65 mph, there was a popping sound and the oil light came on. The car quickly lost power and forced us to the side of the road. We were shaken by the thought what could have happen if we were in an area with heavy traffic. I was able to flag down a passing tow truck to help us out. The road service unit dropped the car off at a local mechanic and the family at home. The local car mechanic could not determine what was wrong with the car until it was taken apart and examined. The first examination determined that the timing chain and had failed and would have to be replaced. The mechanic also explain that the engine would have to be taken apart to determine the extent of the damage. I said yes, although I know it would be an expensive repair. I thought with the low miles (58,767) on the car, the work would be worth while. The examination of the engine revealed a damaged head and bent valves. What looked like a $1000. 00 timing change replacement quickly went to several thousand dollars worth of damage! I called the Saturn dealer to see about warranties that went with the car and what help they could provide. They explain that they couldn't consider a warranty without first examing the car in their own shop and having all the maintenance records provided to them. With the additional towing fees, examination fees from the local mechanic, and no gurantees from the Saturn dealer; I decide to allow the local mechanic to do the work. The following parts had to be replace due to the 'premature" failure of the timing chain: head, head gasket, valve gasket, front cover gasket, timing chain kit, valves, belt, spark plugs, wire set, filter, oil, and antifreeze. The total bill came to $ 2,480. 80. The car is running fine now.
On March 17, 2006, my wife and I returned home from supper around 8:45 pm. At approximately 9:00 pm, I heard a crash outside. I soon discovered that our Saturn had rolled out of the garage and into our neighbors yard across the road. Upon inspection inside the car, I discovered the car was not in park, yet the ignition system had allowed me to remove the key. This is a major safety failure. No car should allow a key to be removed from the ignition without the car being in park. As yet, the failure hasn't been corrected since the car is still at the body shop.
Transmission shifts hard into gears. Service light comes on, but no codes show up on scanner I have found many people with same problem over the internet.
Transmission - 2002 Saturn l series. Took it in for service to the Saturn dealer and the service wrench light came on. Was told that my transmission needs approximately $700 in repairs. Car has 65000 miles on it. Talked to reputable transmission repair garage and they said they have replaced many Saturn transmissions.
I have had ongoing problems with this vehicle since I purchased it in 2003. I purchase this car in August 2003. In October 2003, the car would not start. It was discovered that the wrong type bolt was in the battery causing the car not to start. I purchased the bolt at the dealership had it installed. In October 2004, the car started shifting hard. I took it to the dealership and was told that it needed some type of valve and that would solve the problem. Again, the dealership installed this valve and everything was fine. November 2005, the blower for the heating and defogger only works when the car has sat out in the sun for a while. It does not work in the morning when the car is initially started in the mornings. Three days before christmas 2005, with only approximately 68,000 miles on this car, the timing belt broke. It did not damage the motor and I had it repaired at a cost of around $900. 00. This time I did not have the dealership do the repairs because it would have been very inconvenient and expensive for me to have the car towed the dealership from where it broke down. While looking through my owners manual, I noticed that it stated that my timing belt should last at least to 100,000 miles (my thirteen year old Nissan's timing belt lasted until 120,000 miles). When I addressed this with your customer care line, I was told that the 100,000 miles was just a suggestion and that the belt could actually go at any time. I guess maybe the word suggestion/suggested should have been put in the owners manual because that is not how I understood it when I read it as printed. January 2006, the car starts hard shifting again and again I took it to the dealership and was told that this time the transmission can't seem to figure out the speed of the car and it would cost an additional $80. 00 for them to track it down.
Over 3. 5 years that I have owned my 2000 Saturn lw2 wagon, there have been recurring problems with severe engine misfires and extremely rough shifting of automatic transmission, accompanied by "service" or "service engine soon" dashboard lights coming on. Two different Saturn dealers have repeatedly investigated and found "computer diagnostic codes" proving that "something" did happen, but repeatedly say that there is neither diagnosis of the root cause nor cure that can be applied, other than the band-aid of "resetting the computer" and telling me to go on my way, that will be fifty bucks please. In two cases this problem caused a complete breakdown requiring the car to be towed.
Car has a very noisy drive train took it to the dealer and they said was tires I changed tires and the noise is still there, the sound is like a grinding noise, it starts at 40 mph and increases as I go.
Unable to shift into gear. Vehicle at dealer shop for repairs. Feel free to provide any further information concerning this matter.
Tires are wearing unevenly, all tires were replaced by dealer at 234 miles. At this time tires need to be replaced again. Affinity ap, p205/65r15.
While driving on moderately hilly highway, the cruise control caused the engine to go to full throttle accompanied by a transmission downshift resulting in rapid and potentially dangerous acceleration. This has occurred three times. .
While accelerating transmission is harsh or fails to shift immediately, resulting in car surging forward. Dealer has replaced seals and problem diminished some. Problem then came back to pre-repair state- taken to dealership. Problem cannot be identified.
While driving engine check light came on ,vehicle will shift hard into gear, and jerk forward. Contacted dealler. Had vehicle serviced 3 times, however, problem still occurred. Dealership could not fix problem.
