1 Equipment problem of the 2002 Saturn LS

Failure Date: 03/28/2023

The contact owns a 2002 Saturn j-type. The contact stated that while driving at an undisclosed speed, the vehicle's brake lights failed to illuminate. The contact related the failure to NHTSA campaign number: 05v245000 (exterior lighting), however, the part to do the recall repair is no longer being manufactured. The vehicle was not diagnosed nor repaired by an independent mechanic or dealer. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 118,000.

2 Equipment problem of the 2001 Saturn LS

Failure Date: 10/26/2018

I was driving my car and it stalled and would not restart. I had it diagnosed by a mechanic and it is the timing chain. From what I've researched, this year make and model vehicle had a recall but only on specific ones made within a four month period but my car falls into the recall description and I'm not sure about the time frame. My car was being driven on the highway at about 55 mph when this happened.

4 Equipment problem of the 2001 Saturn LS

Failure Date: 10/07/2016

Car stopped while at a stop light just after exiting the freeway , and would not restart. After walking home, had car towed to a car repair shop. They determined that the timing cable had broken and had damaged other parts of the engine. We noticed that there is a recall in place for some Saturns, but don't know if our car is included in the recall.

5 Equipment problem of the 2001 Saturn LS

Failure Date: 02/02/2015

Car is 2001 Saturn l200 with less than 100,000 miles and the timing chain broke as the car was pulling into the driveway. My VIN is not covered by the timing chain recall issued by gm, so I now have a completely unusable car which is rated in good condition other than the timing chain unless I want to spend the 1000 plus to fix it. Gm/NHTSA issued recall number 07v519000 for other similar Saturns in year and model for the timing chain, why not all of them in the same years? after speaking with gm and researching the part number, my chain was built in the same wilmington delaware plant with the manufacture default diagnosis as the other recalled timing chains belonging to other 2001, 2002, 2003 Saturn l series cars. This needs to be a covered recall for this car as well as there is obviously an issue with these chains breaking in the cars- thank goodness I was only pulling into the driveway when it broke rather than driving in heavy traffic on the road. Make this right gm- and cover this repair for this car.

6 Equipment problem of the 2001 Saturn LS

Failure Date: 12/23/2013

Ignition cylinder seized in ignition housing.

7 Equipment problem of the 2002 Saturn LS

Failure Date: 04/04/2013

Approx. March 2013 started having this problem, never before! driving home as it got dark and head lights running on dusk to dawn "sensor" head lights all of a sudden started going from day time running lights to low beam and back to high beam the whole ride home which took approx. 1 hour. Has happened again off and on and had the car in the shop twice for this problem and they said they could not find anything wrong and that the e-mails they get says it is " normal operating conditions???" I don't think so when your lights keep going up and down ( high- low) and expecting someone thinking you are letting them out and pull out in from of you. Garage claims there is no solution, so this is why we are writing, what do we do?? realize it is a 2002 but never had the problem and now it's not able to be solved?? very scary when driving at night??.

8 Equipment problem of the 2002 Saturn LS

Failure Date: 07/06/2011

Timing chain broke. Complete loss of power and destruction of engine. No noise or warning beforehand. Traveling in center lane of three lane interstate highway during afternoon rush hour traffic. Lucky to make it to shoulder without accident. Could have easily been injured or killed if stopped on roadway. After reading about the investigation, I'm appalled that no information has been sent by gm suggesting a replacement of the chain tensioner and oiler. I could have done this myself. Instead, I spent $2000 for an engine.

9 Equipment problem of the 2002 Saturn LS

Failure Date: 02/12/2010

Vehicle would not start. Mechanic diagnosed a faulty crank sensor. Cost to replace $160. 50.

10 Equipment problem of the 2001 Saturn LS

Failure Date: 12/15/2009

My 2001 Saturn l-series 2. 2l had the timing chain break. This was in a parking lot. I had started the car and backed out. I put the vehicle in drive. Didn't touch the gas pedal and the car quit. I was left crosswise the drive lane and blocking traffic. If this had happened at highway speeds, I probably have been seriously hurt or more likely have been killed.

11 Equipment problem of the 2002 Saturn LS

Failure Date: 10/07/2009

Car running very rough. Mechanic diagnosed a faulty camshaft position sensor. Cost to replace sensor $264. 14.

12 Equipment problem of the 2001 Saturn LS

Failure Date: 07/18/2009

I have a 2001 Saturn l200. I was driving on the highway when I felt a pop. My car started to lose speed and I was lucky to be able to pull over on the side. I tried starting the vehicle but it wouldn't. I had it tolled to my garage at home. I had a mechanic come over the next day and he showed me where the timing chain had broke. I had the car pushed to the Saturn dealership in arlington, TX and they confirmed the timing chain had broken. They quoted me a price of $2300. 00 to repair it and I refused and had it tolled back to my home.

13 Equipment problem of the 2000 Saturn LS

Failure Date: 02/02/2009

While driving on the freeway with my 5 year old daughter during the morning commute, transitioning from one hwy 24 to I-80 in the emeryvillle / berkeley area in California, our Saturn 2000 lw wagon suddenly lost power. I was able to pull over to the shoulder but could not restart the car. I was towed to my mechanic, who diagnosed the problem as a broken timing chain and told me the engine would have to be replaced. I understand this is a frequent problem with this engine and that other years of this model have been recalled for this reason.

14 Equipment problem of the 2001 Saturn LS

Failure Date: 08/01/2008

Fuel system integrity.

15 Equipment problem of the 2002 Saturn LS

Failure Date: 07/10/2008

2002 Saturn l 200 had complete engine failure while on route 197 and car stopped in middle of road and wouldn't restart. Car has about 60k miles on it. Fortunately my daughter was able to get the car off the road. Problem was found to be timing chain failure with destruction of the engine. Saturn reviewed our maintenance record, deemed it "excellent" and said it would cost me only $3500 to get a rebuilt engine put in. They refused to acknowledge any problem with timing chain. I am reluctantly going forward with repair because I can't afford a new car now, but I think this problem could lead to more serious consequences for other drivers and timing chain problem in all l200 should prompt recall.

16 Equipment problem of the 2001 Saturn LS

Failure Date: 06/08/2008

1. The battery died exactly one year after I purchased the car. 2. Tires don't last. They wear out very fast. I read that it's due to a front end suspension problem, and can be fixed with a kit that costs over $500. 00, which I can't afford at all. 3. Heater core went bad and leaked engine coolant into the passenger side floor board. 4 after my car died in two separate intersections, and a service engine light was on, I found out the problem was the mass air flow sensor and crank sensor was bad. Those parts were around $400. 00 to replace. 5. While driving a reduced power light came on and the engine lost power, luckily I was able to pull off to the side before it completely went out. 6. Another service engine light has come on. The computer reader says it is a lean fuel distribution. The mechanic is checking any possibilities for the problem, but it is looking like the fuel pump needs to be replaced. 7. Service engine light with the wrench is on. The car jolts pretty hard when shifting gears. This used to happen on a very rare occurrence. Now it has been on the past few days, so that also needs to be looked at by my mechanic. 8. Once hitting 60mph the steering wheel shakes. The cause to this is still undetermined. 9. The oil filter has been replaced twice this month and is still leaking oil. So this problem needs to be fixed as well. 10. The rear brakes and lighting system has been recalled. The sockets look as though they have been burned and melted. Saturn has produced a very unreliable car. I, along with the thousands of other consumers who are faced with these problems are outraged, and feel as though Saturn should be held responsible for this. Because no matter the mileage or age this model, we are all experiencing the same issues. As consumers, we should not have to put up with this. I wish there were something that could be done, and I am going to do my best to get the word put out in the open. No more american made cars for me.

17 Equipment problem of the 2002 Saturn LS

Failure Date: 05/27/2008

May 27, 2008 -while at a traffic light the car cut off when I tried to accelerate. The car was towed to the dealership where they installed a new fuel pump. Four days later the same thing occurred. Fuel pump was replaced(3x's)this incident has occurred a total of five times. The fourth time they replaced the pcm( computer module) and it cut off again, the car is still @ the dealership. I have had the car in my possession for less than two weeks since the initial incident, in may it is now July 15,2008.

18 Equipment problem of the 2001 Saturn LS

Failure Date: 04/25/2008

19 Equipment problem of the 2000 Saturn LS

Failure Date: 12/05/2007

I own a 2000 Saturn Ls2. There have been 2 recalls on the "l" series vehicles. Although my model is considered the Ls series, I have experienced the exact same symptoms with my vehicle as described with the l series recall. The most recent was the replacement of all four of the oxygen sensors in my vehicle which I believe to be the same problem as described with the l series vehicle and attributed to the Saturn part known as the ignition control module. Over a period of about 2 months I noticed: 1. A deterioration in idle quality 2. A reduction in overall engine power 3. The engine was hard to start these are exactly the same problems experienced with the icm recall on the "l" series. I had to replace, at my own expense, all 4 of the oxygen sensors for this vehicle. After contacting Saturn, they insisted, based on my VIN #, that my car was not included in this recall. It seems rather coincidental that I have experienced the exact same symptoms as 2 recalls on the same model year car from the same manufacturer. It is my belief that the recalls should be extended to cover the Ls series vehicles as well.

20 Equipment problem of the 2001 Saturn LS

Failure Date: 01/14/2007

My family and I were traveling on u. S. 301 at 9:00 a. M. On our way home in our 2001 Saturn (l100) coupe. There was a clicking sound coming from the engine that had started while driving home. While going 65 mph, there was a popping sound and the oil light came on. The car quickly lost power and forced us to the side of the road. We were shaken by the thought what could have happen if we were in an area with heavy traffic. I was able to flag down a passing tow truck to help us out. The road service unit dropped the car off at a local mechanic and the family at home. The local car mechanic could not determine what was wrong with the car until it was taken apart and examined. The first examination determined that the timing chain and had failed and would have to be replaced. The mechanic also explain that the engine would have to be taken apart to determine the extent of the damage. I said yes, although I know it would be an expensive repair. I thought with the low miles (58,767) on the car, the work would be worth while. The examination of the engine revealed a damaged head and bent valves. What looked like a $1000. 00 timing change replacement quickly went to several thousand dollars worth of damage! I called the Saturn dealer to see about warranties that went with the car and what help they could provide. They explain that they couldn't consider a warranty without first examing the car in their own shop and having all the maintenance records provided to them. With the additional towing fees, examination fees from the local mechanic, and no gurantees from the Saturn dealer; I decide to allow the local mechanic to do the work. The following parts had to be replace due to the 'premature" failure of the timing chain: head, head gasket, valve gasket, front cover gasket, timing chain kit, valves, belt, spark plugs, wire set, filter, oil, and antifreeze. The total bill came to $ 2,480. 80. The car is running fine now.

21 Equipment problem of the 2000 Saturn LS

Failure Date: 09/01/2006

Repeated failure of the starting of my car, 2000 Saturn Ls2. Passlock security system is the problem. For no reason at all, the security feature triggers and DE-activates the fuel pump for 10 minutes. Has been happening for the past two years, multiple times a month. My car has been "dead" in the driveway now for two days as the security feature will not DE-activate. Only way to fix is for a dealership to repair, but not a guaranteed fix. Cost anywhere from $300 to $500 to fix. Numerous blog sites contain same complaint from lots of gm owners. If anyone is put into an emergency situation and the passlock security feature fails, that person is stuck for 10 minutes or more. There is no fix to be found. . Read more...
