36 Exterior Lighting problem of the 2008 Saturn Outlook

Failure Date: 10/12/2011

The drivers side headlamp failed. I purchased a new lamp with a direct replacement, same wattage and type. During replacement, I noticed that the connector was discolored and plastic was starting to melt. I cleaned the connector and replaced the lamp. Two weeks later the same lamp failed. The connector was melted further, rendering it unusable. I had to replace the connector assembly. The wire is very thin and I have read other reports that the wires had melted.

There has been cases of it melting which could cause fire. Saturn/gm doesn't care. Contacted numerous dealers and every one of them is trying to rip me off. What does it take to get a recall on this? death? gm needs to make this right.

Failure Date: 08/15/2011

I have researched on various online forums and found that many owners of Saturn Outlooks and GMC acadias are having the same problem of wiring harnesses to the headlamps melting. This requires a replacement of the wiring harness, which must be done at the dealer since the only way to access the wiring is to remove the front tire and the wheel well.

44 Exterior Lighting problem of the 2008 Saturn Outlook

Failure Date: 07/23/2011

I have a 2008 Saturn Outlook, on 7/26/11 my driver side headlamp bulb went out. After I looked at it closely, the harness was charred and melted. This was the second time this has happened to the driver side headlamp. The first time happened at 21,000 miles, very early for something like this to happen. I called the dealer and they quoted me on three parts if needed: bulb $18; harness $40; headlamp assembly $377. Something is wrong with that headlamp wiring that has cause this problem again and im not the only one. This shouldn't be happening to a fairly new vehicle. Gm needs to fix this issue if they expect customers to be loyal and continue buying their vehicles. This might be my last gm vehicle.

45 Exterior Lighting problem of the 2009 Saturn Outlook

Failure Date: 07/14/2011

The headlamp on the right side went out in July 2011 and we had it replaced at a gm dealership. September 20th, 2011 rolls around and the same headlamp is out again! funny thing, as I'm driving around town I'm noticing the same problem (right side even) on other gm vehicles of the same body style.

Failure Date: 05/13/2011

Driver side headlamp went out pulling out of driveway. Took vehicle to dealer who informed us it was a known issue with the headlamp harness not bulb. Harness was melted and scorched. Ordered new "improved" harness and replaced. Passenger side harness experienced same failure ordered new "improved" harness and replaced in July. All repairs and replacement cost were not covered under warranty and I had to pay for all out of pocket costs. On October 3rd passenger side harness burned out again. Have to purchase new part and replace for the 3rd time. This could have been very dangerous it if happened while driving at night. The fact that harness is scorched and melting also concerns me. I am afraid of the risk posed to myself and my family as we use this vehicle to transport our 2 young children daily.

The dealer told me that it was not the bulb, but the harness or sleeve. They told me it was cost me $799. 00 that was a month ago. Now the other side has gone out too. I think they would do a call back, because I checked on line and found that there are a number of people with the same problem and complaints. My Outlook had 42,000 miles on it. I really need some help in this matter, I can't afford to fix this problem. I had to be bad from the beginning.

I have a 2009 Saturn Outlook and the passenger side head light went out in March of 2011 (there was no message in the car to indicate this either). I took it to the local gm dealership and had the light bulb replaced. Which cost over $40 (because of the difficulty with having to remove the tire just to replace the bulb). To my unpleasant surprise the passenger side head light is out again after only 3 months.

58 Exterior Lighting problem of the 2007 Saturn Outlook

Failure Date: 03/22/2011

Passenger side headlamp inoperable. Wiring harness connector to headlamp burnt/melted. Gm has a TSB #09-08-42-004 on the issue which should be upgraded to a recall. This condition could cause a fire and is safety related since it affects the headlamp system.

I have had to replace the driver's side headlamp on my 2007 Saturn Outlook 7 times, and the entire assembly once, I was told there was a wiring problem, causing a "short". This is obviously a safety issue, as the headlamps should not fail at this rate.

66 Exterior Lighting problem of the 2008 Saturn Outlook

Failure Date: 02/15/2011

My 2008 Saturn Outlook. . . The left headlamp would go out and then on and out, etc. I took the Saturn to the shop where I purchased this vehicle new. It was the wire harness that was bad so they replaced this and also replaced the headlamp bulb. It cost a total of $148. 38. My vehicle has only 52,000 miles on it. Seems to be a problem with the Outlook and should have been a recall on this.

67 Exterior Lighting problem of the 2008 Saturn Outlook

Failure Date: 02/14/2011

I have a 2008 Saturn Outlook xr. There are now over 150 complaints filed with the NHTSA regarding electrical problems and failure of the low beam lights on both sides. My passenger side failed and when repairs were started the gm repair shop noted the wiring harness where the bulb is inserted was burned (melted and blackened) as is the case in all the complaints I reviewed. Gm issued a TSB in may 2009 addressing this problem (TSB# 09-08-42-004) which included filling the connector cavity with nyogel grease after removing and replacing the harness. My vehicle is out of warranty with just over 41,000 miles. The gm shop acknowledged that they have seen other vehicles in this model line with the same failure. However they had no directions to cover the repairs since the vehicle was out of warranty. It was recommended that I call gm customer assistance. That call resulted in an apparent lack of knowledge of this problem in spite of the numerous NHTSA complaints and internet discussions regarding this problem. This is an obvious safety issue should a failure occur while driving at night. I can also expect that the drivers side will also fail which will result in an additional repair cost beyond just replacing a burned out bulb.

68 Exterior Lighting problem of the 2007 Saturn Outlook

Failure Date: 01/20/2011

Left headlamp works intermittently. Can never depend on it working or not. Both headlamps when they are both working are very dim on low beam but seem to get brighter after about an hour of being on.

69 Exterior Lighting problem of the 2008 Saturn Outlook

Failure Date: 01/15/2011

I have a 2008 Saturn Outlook that has burning wire harnesses. They have completely melted at 40,000 miles. The extended warranty company will not cover it. After looking online, I became aware that it is a common problem. The lights went out with no warning.

70 Exterior Lighting problem of the 2008 Saturn Outlook

Failure Date: 01/12/2011

My passenger light went out so I figured I would need to replace the bulb. The next night it was working again. It worked for about two days and went out again so I figured there was a short. I got into the light fixture and looked at the bulb and it looked good but I pulled the light out anyways to change for new since I was in there already. To my surprise the fixture holding the lamp was completely melted and looked like there was arching to it with the plastic melted all around it. Plus some corrosion on some of the wires. I work for the air force on f16's so I know alot about the corrosion and the way it looks. This is a safety issue that looks from searching the web happens in a lot of these vehicles. It isn't a freak thing that just happened to a couple cars. By the inspection of the harness and connector there is a safety defect that needs to be fixed before this causes a fire and or accident.
