One problem related to transmission not engage has been reported for the 1997 Saturn SC2. The most recently reported issues are listed below.
Vehicle will not engage in 1st,2nd and 3rd gears easily,it is very difficult. Dealer replaced 5 times transmission housing assembly/shifter cable/shiftboard, and clutch, but defect still exists.
